I'd give them a trio of LB2s instead, but YMMV. :)

I don't know poop about aero so I wasn't sure which size would be appropriate

I don't know all that much about AT2 either, but if someone brings VTOLs I'd take all the range I can get. So LB2s. :)

Aerospace take a control roll in atmosphere if they take damage at all. That means more hit chances are better than big damage if you want to cause a crash. It is also helpful to have enough range to engage fighters that can be on the low altitude map, where additional distance is added for each level of altitude.

Since field guns have a minimum crew size, it is also helpful to use multiple smaller guns to remain effective when taking damage. It takes less damage to silence an LB5 than two LB2s.
Subtlety is for those who lack a bigger gun.

The AA Weapons aren't great.  If you want 3/6/9 range outside of the field guns, you're better off with 5 Auto-Rifles and 2 Inteks per squad.

Primary weapons as support weapons? I was unaware that was a thing

The other AA guns I'd consider are the LB-10X and LAC-5.  They put a 5 point cluster on aerotech targets for TACs, which LB-5X will not.  Whether this is better or worse than more lawndart checks depends on the target's piloting skill and if any facings have 40 or less armor.  IIRC it's possible to get a pilot who has no chance of failing the PSR from getting hit unless he already has engine or avionics damage if you roll for skills on the Inner Sphere elite unit table.

LB-10Xs are also obviously better if you have to repurpose your AA platoon as a tank destroyer platoon.

Yep, Tech Manual page 151.  And it should be "Standard Weapons as Secondary Weapons".  The other advantage is no movement penalty.
