SHORAD Section AKA Motorized Field Gun Infantry
« on: 02 March 2019, 14:18:30 »
Motorized Infantry Field Gun Section – Short Range Air Defense, SHORAD

Standard Republic Guard SHORAD Section

Section is equipped with 2 trailer mounted LAC-5 autocannons; 1 cannon per trailer. SHORAD sections are for rear-area air defense only. Republic Guard combat forces provide their own SHORAD support.
Section Infantry TRO is below. Gun trailer TRO is just FYI.
The picture below shows what I envision this motorized infantry field gun section to look like when set up. Basically, the guns a directed remotely from a nearby field shelter of some sort. Sensors makeup a fourth component to the section. Link below is to the real world Oerlikon Skyshield SHORAD system in the picture.
The section would require 3 trucks in the 10-ton range to tow the guns, sensor system and fire control center. The trucks would also carry spare ammo and any other supplies and equipment the section may have.
Standard higher echelon organization is 2 sections per SHORAD platoon. An ADA battery would consist of 2 SHORAD platoons, 1 ADA platoon and a command element. The ADA platoon consists of 2 sections of trailer mounted Arrow missile launchers; 2 launchers per section. I imagine 1 SHORAD section would be deployed with each ADA section to provide close protection and the battery’s other 2 SHORAD sections could provide close protection to other high value assets. And hopefully everyone would be under the ADA platoon’s protective umbrella.

Support
Since this air defense unit is based on motorized infantry field gun rules each gun section is total self-contained and requires no technical support squads. I envision the gun crew as the technicians that maintain the guns, fire direction gear and any other equipment the section has.
An ADA Section would be supported like vehicles and BattleMechs; 1 technician/mechanic squad per trailer. At 15 tons per Arrow launcher they are far too manpower intensive as motorized field gun infantry in my opinion.

Interesting concept... a few comments:

- CampOps does require technical support for infantry, at a rate of one Tech Team per four platoons.  Given your battery size, you may be able to get away without one at the battery level, but the next echelon up will need to take care of it.

- I might recommend my AR+ for their regular weapons.  I used the multi-shot grenade launcher most of the canon combined weapons use.

- I'm away from my books, or I'd look this up myself.  If you went with LAC/2s, would it be possible to squeeze two into a single squad?  If so, a Taurian organization (30 trooper platoons) could squeeze a six-gun battery into a single platoon.

You are correct Daryk I should've  made clear an infantry tech squad would be required at ADA battalion level.

I go back and forth between class B ordnance multi shot grenade launchers, class B ordnance single shot grenade launchers and class A ordnance single shot grenade launchers. Class B ordnance multi shot grenade launchers seem a bit munchies IMO. Republic infantry weapons are pretty low tech so I elected on single shot, light ordnance launchers.

LAC-2 autocannons are 4 tons each so I'd have to increase squad size to 8 to get 2 cannons per squad.

I decided on the LAC-5 for a better chance at a forcing a critical roll due to exceeding a damage threshold rather than a third chance to force a control roll.

Just fixed the link in my earlier post...  I see two LAC/5s would fit in a Taurian squad (of 10), but of course that's not what you're building.

As far as grenade launchers, we've had multi-launchers in 40mm since Vietnam (see the one China Lake built for the SEALs).  I think 40mm is roughly Class B ordnance in AToW, and TPTB used that size repeatedly in building various combination weapons (e.g., the versions of the Mauser).  It only takes three shots to get over the reload factor problem that cripples the single shot versions.  I did a thread on those too...

Yes, multi shot grenade launchers have been around for a long time but I'm not aware on one attached to a rifle.

Have you humped around an M16 with M203 grenade launcher attached for weeks on end before? I haven't with an M203 attached but I have humped around the M16 piece for a couple weeks straight and I'd prefer not to hump 1 around with another kilo or 2 attached.

I'd say a 40 mm grenade is closer to class C than B. But even a class B grenade is going to be close to a kilo, the mass for grenades on page 279 of A Time of War is the hand thrown variety, and cut the mass of the launcher itself in half since it's attached to a rifle you're still talking 4 kg for a loaded grenade launcher and perhaps another 3 for the rifle. You'd have to be an elemental for that to not be on the heavy and bulky side.

I only got to fire the M203 twice, years ago.  The M16 I humped around during my pre-deployment training wasn't too bad.  Overall, I agree with you on the real world mass and such, but in the game, the Mausers and M42B leap to mind as examples of multi-shot launchers existing in game as non-encumbering combination weapons.  I also believe the OICW had an integral multi-shot 25mm launcher in the real world.

Complete with a Battletech-sized targeting computer. :P
All that is born dies,
All that is planned fails,
All that is built crumbles,
But memories continue on,
And that is beautiful.
