Looking for group in Lower Mainland BC, Canada
« on: 09 March 2020, 01:33:32 »
Hi! I'm relatively new to BattleTech (a few months in) and am currently reading through all the current rulebooks. I'd love to get into some games but it seems kind of hard to find groups around this location (Canada, BC, lower mainland area, Surrey) and it'd be great to be able to meet up with people who actually know what they're doing.
Not picky about game types, I love pretty much every version I've tried (so far I've played Classic BattleTech and Alpha Strike and read the rules for BattleForce, haven't played MechWarrior Dark Age/Age of Destruction but I'd grab a starter set and some booster packs if I had to). I have the maps (and other equipment) from the Beginner Box and A Game Of Armored Combat sets as well as several home-printed and assembled maps that are compatible (to bring if we needed them)
Thanks!

If I recall correctly, there is a monthly event hosted by Trumpeter Games at the Bonsor Community Centre in Burnaby. I haven't played BattleTech in eight years, but I am planning to attend the April event. Hopefully some other Vancouver-area players can add any thoughts about the local scene.

Thank you! I just checked out their website and the Trumpeter's Salute 2020 (https://trumpetergaming.weebly.com/trumpeter-salute-2020.html) seems like a total jam. I'll definitely be checking that out, it seems like it'd be a great place to meet nearby players.

Usually there are a bunch of us at garage games and geekry every friday. If you're in Surrey, that's just over the bridge, in Maple Ridge. For obvious reasons that's cancelled for the foreseeable future. I'll give you a shout when it starts up again.

I'm thinking of trying to run one of these:

Quote
Dates: TBD
Where: Garage Games, Maple Ridge
Entry Fee: Thanking me for fronting the prize, Garage Games game night fee ($5/night)
Prize: TBD

Scoring:
Showing up with an army that meets the guidelines: 1 point each night
Winning a match: 1 point
Tie: Half point
Each player has a point worthless to themselves they can give to another for best army or gamesmanship, one time only.

Setup: Each night will be a 1 versus 1 match with a different opponent, lasting from 7pm until 9:45pm. Each player chooses a map for each battle after being assigned an opponent. Said maps will be arranged in a legal manner, and the player will deploy on the map they chose, within 3 hexes of the far side opposite their opponent.

Force Building Guidelines
Maximum of four units, fewer allowed
One assault or two heavy maximum, other units must be 55 tons or lighter
Standard Battletech weapons and equipment. If it is in Total Warfare it’s good.
Unit Types – any ground unit type in total warfare. No ASF or fighters. WiGE (Wing in Ground Effect) probably aren’t a good idea either, but not disallowed.
6000 BV maximum.
Default pilots are 4/5. Skill advancement to be paid for per standard rules. No SPAs or other formation benifits.
Canon units only, no customs.
Costs for units and piloting can be found on this site: http://www.masterunitlist.info ;  Solaris Skunkworks and most megamek builds are out of date.
Only one unit of a specific type. Variants count as different types.
Piloting and gunnery must be within two of each other. 3/5 is allowed, 2/5 is not.

Other people on the board in the lower mainland are NeonKnight and Roundtop.

Hello and Welcome to probably the LARGEST COVERED AREA FOR DEMO AGENTS.

Seriously, there's like around 10 of us here.

Like GreatClub said their is Garage Games in Maple Ridge. I live in Surrey (Cloverdale/Clayton Heights to be exact) but can be found at BONSOR (Metrotown) for Trumpeters (often the first Friday of every month)

On the Forums for DEMO AGENTS we have:

Myself (Daniel Thomson)
RoundTop (James Magnan)
Lord Cameron (Alex Balmer)
Sniper (Shawn Winstanley)

Not on the Forums, but seen on Facebook:

Andrew McBride
And a few others who are newer agents.

And yes, Trumpeters is cancelled for the time being  :'( but hopefully things'll gear up in a few months.

Hi there.

It's always great to get new players.

If you aren't aware, there is a Battletech Vancouver Facebook group where local players hang out as well.  Please feel free to join.

table warriors GT was planning to run a battletech tourney this year. Hopefully that happens next year.

We used to have MechCon. That didn't happen last year, they had the mechwarrior 5 intro party instead. Don't know what'll happen this year.

I talked to Rob and he was generally good with having a battletech tourney when things start up - mostly because he can't figure out how to have D&D games.

Mind you, It'll probably be masks mandatory, separate dice, and stepping back on the other persons turn. Plus other precautions we dream up.

I'm thinking that mini-box-o-doom are the best way to keep dice from going all over, or personal dice towers. Movement dice would be harder.

Talked to Rob again. Assuming all goes well, he might start holding 40k tournaments in July again.

For obvious reasons (BT players don't spend as much) we're a way lower priority, but he isn't resistant to the concept of us running our own stuff during time where nothing else is happening. We're talking like eight players max in the store, one person stepping back over tape before the other steps forward, masks, no sharing books, and he has to do a binder-size safety assessment w/approval by WCB.

So yeah, if all goes well we might be able to run something soon(ish)

Long time no see good sir!
Yes we do remember you
;)
We're hoping to start up again after the summer, so check the Facebook page, or check on the thread in this forum, hopefully when the Pandemic winds down.

Greeting Amelody!

I am the CDT Lead Agent for West Coast conventions, although obviously not much happening now, as NeonKnight mentioned.

Besides the Trumpeters monthly meeting at Bonsor, there are a number of local conventions that we support.

June - GT Table Warriors Abbotsford (cancelled)
Aug - Pax Prime (Catalyst Tier 1)
Sept - Trumpeter Call to Arms - Status unknown
Oct - Shux Tabletop (New this year - now cancelled)
Oct - Vcon - Now cancelled
Dec - Mechcon (Catalyst Tier 1.5) - Not yet announced

Mar - Terminal City Tabletop - possibly Battletech demos
April - Trumpeter salute.

PAX Prime (Seattle) has a Catalyst full retail booth & 10 - 12 Demo Agents attending.
Mechcon has a smaller retail booth
The other local conventions usually have Demo tables set up.

I'm still showing Pax Prime & Trumpeter Sept as still planned, however unfortunately I suspect that both will soon be cancelled this year.

Good news is that garage will probably start up the next 2-4 weeks. All hail phase three

Bad news is that BT will probably be shifting to Thursday night.

Getting out to Ridge on weeknights may be a tad difficult for me, but I'll do my best to attend other events as phase three begins.

Once the Canadian Kickstarter packages begin to arrive next week (hopefully), I'd be happy to do some mini trading if anyone misses out on a 'Mech from the salvage boxes.

Maybe. What are you planning?

Also, there is a Friday group in Maple Ridge that could use another warm body or two.
