Okay when did the word 'hell' stop being a swear? (e.g. the 'mech, Hellbringer)  Why the flipping fudge-cake (I don't drop the f-bomb) the forum members didn't call it the Heckbringer? :P  I don't swear that much. (but I keep it at moderate outside this forum and don't use 'em here)  And I don't swear the colorful 4 letter words here or anywhere

"Hell" seems to have begun its depreciation from serious expletive to mild curse sometime in the 1930s, as by WWII it was used for several military vehicles and units (the Hellcat and Hellfighters both spring to mind). "Damn" seems to have held out for longer, but by the 1980s, at least, it had lost much of its impact. The creation of the PG13 movie rating seems to have cemented them.

We have made a small change of the rule. Swearing here is forbidden but we allow now links to places with swear words if the user warns about the content. Here's the new rule 2:
Quote
Hate speech of any form is not allowed on the forum. Excessive use of swearwords in member posts is also not allowed. Links to websites or web-content with swearwords is allowed in member posts if the poster provides a content warning along with the link. This link exception does not protect any posted link that conflicts with other Forum Rules. For example, links to websites with adult content, or content that infringes any intellectual property will receive a warning.

This forum has a language filter in place designed to catch words we object to. Filtered words are automatically replaced with ****** upon posting. This forum does not tolerate posters bypassing the language filter. Self-censoring will result in a poster being issued an official warning. If a poster is unsure whether or not a word will be filtered by the forum’s filter prior to posting, we suggest using the Preview function (located next to the ‘Post’ button) to determine if a questionable word is filtered or not. Forum Moderators will warn for any self-censored word, even words that would pass the forum’s language filter.

Examples of Self-Censoring Include the Following:
Typing: @$$ or @ss rather than ‘ass’

Maybe we should have a filter that will replace 21st century swearing with 31st century swearing. Stravag, freebirth and unity will fill the void.

I hope you do not consider 'self censoring' to be my typing something like:

HOLY %@#*@!

because believe it or not...I was warned for posting the exact same thing on the ELITE DANGEROUS forums  ???

As long as you obscure the whole word, it doesn't count against you. But if you obscure some letters and leave others, then it does.

What roosterboy said. The way you typed it is fine. Actually typing "holy shit" is fine. Typing a nastier word and letting the censortron get it is fine.

If you started that gobbledygook with an S or F so people can tell what word it is without typing it all out, or any other form of only typing the word in question partway, that's when posts get pulled and warnings/bans get issued.

Since those aren't actual swearwords, you're good.

Look, this rule is very simple: just type whatever it is you want to say. The censortron will obscure any words that have been deemed objectionable; everything else will go through. That's all you have to do. There's really nothing more to it.

Say what you want to say and let the censortron do it's job.

Unless you somehow manage to come up with some horrific new word that the admins deem unacceptable and hasn't yet been added to the censortron, you'll be good. But the chances of that are very, very, very unlikely.

I am honestly baffled why people find this rule so hard to understand.

Just so you know Roosterboy, not being difficult, my example was typing like one sees swearing in some of the old comic strips back in the day. Someone cursing represented by: #@%$!$@

Now, I have no intention to swear on these boards (I get to do enough in real life thanx :D)

My example was in ELITE DANGEROUS I found something while exploring the galaxy that I was really stocked about an titled the thread : MY BEST HOLY #@$&*! MOMENT

I was then warned for bypassing the swear filter, I was stumped...how could I be bypassing a filter when I typed gibberish, wasn't even 'Leet Speak'. Trust me, I do not wish to cause a problem, and not looking to skirt the rule. I just want to know where the rule starts to avoid coming close.

I got a warning for self censorship with a word that was allowed and it just looked vaguely like the word.

So, according to what I quoted here I shouldn't have been given the warning. It didn't start with S or F or any word that the filters would have filtered out.

Yeah, I got that and that's fine. (BTW, the technical term for that is grawlix.) In that case, you can't tell what the censored word is so you're good.

I got a warning for self censorship with a word that was allowed and it just looked vaguely like the word.

As you rightly should have, since you broke the rule.

Quote
So, according to what I quoted here I shouldn't have been given the warning.

Quite the opposite.

Quote
It didn't start with S or F or any word that the filters would have filtered out.

But, by your own admission, you could tell what the word behind your clumsy attempt at self-censoring was. So it's a violation. In fact, your own description of your violation matches exactly with one of the examples of what not to do in the very text of Rule 2 itself. Check out the first of the two examples given in the rule; it doesn't use any of the letters in the actual word but rather uses symbols that vaguely resemble those letters. And it's a word that the censortron allows through to boot!

So, in summary: Don't self-censor. We have a censortron so let it do it's job. If you want to type shit, type shit; the censortron allows that through unscathed, so it's all good. If you want to type ******, type ******; that particular word has been deemed unacceptable on these forums so the censortron blocks it and you're still good. Don't get cutesy and use @ for a or $ for s or whatever other ridiculous disguise you want to use to hide what you're saying but still make it recognizable what you said. Do like NeonKnight did and use complete gibberish. *** is acceptable self-censoring. ##### is acceptable self-censoring. %#@*£! is acceptable self-censoring. Anything where you can still tell what the original word was is not.

It doesn't matter how 'bad' the word is. Makes no difference between shit, ******, Belgium, Athraskala, or even kitten. If you partially obscure a word, you will get a warning. It is that simple.

In an effort to avoid ignorance of the rules, does the censortron work inside code tags?  It strikes me as extremely unwise to experiment...

Your caution marks you as wise...

That being said...I don't know. You could always experiment by typing out a post like that, then using the preview button to see what it will look like without the risk of actually posting it.

Wait, even completely mundane words like "potato" or "fish" (or my retired father's favorite swearword, "work")?  That's...interesting.  Never realized that before.

I know I could be in trouble for this but, why isn't the word "Slag" considered a swear in this forum?  I know it's a swear in the UK (No definition needed).  And I'm aware of the XTRO Steiner mech called "Slagmaiden".

Because it was a real word before the British added a slang definition to it.

Most of the initial forum staff were American I believe(less so these days), so the censortron's vocabulary reflects that. The fact that some words may be expletives in certain cultures, but perfectly innocent in others complicates this, especially when the word's innocent usage may come up on a regular basis in the context of Battletech, as in your case.

Gotta be honest, I had no idea that word was an expletive in any culture.

What would be amusing would be if the censortron was keyed to flag BattleTech swear worlds, like "malfing" and "surat"
"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! It's more of an epithet than a swearword per se. In the unlikely instance someone used it in that context on the forums, it'd be a Rule 1, anyway.

It's akin to "bloody" I'd think.  Impolite in the UK, just the way some people order their steak in the US.  Or a description of a crime scene.  Or how the working portions of a butcher shop look.  etc.
