Thanks! that saves me a little bit of work, but I do have to change a couple things, the forums went down right after I upgraded things to 35.21. Glad they're appreciated
Also I did not use your service much recently, still, and again, you have my thanks. :)
You're quite welcome.

Sticky :D
-
Thanks! Looks like I need to map those server addresses again!
-
2348 switched from 35.19 to 35.21
Had reports that that the 35.21 server is crashing and needing resets. I STRONGLY URGE people to make sure they are connecting to the proper port with the proper version. Version Mismatch can cause instability and crashes. If the server crashes, please email restless@chaosgarden.net so I can reset it.
-
i just wanted to say thank you for the use of your server, now me and my brother can play together, thanks a ton
-
I always love to hear that people are using the server and appreciate it! Thanks :D
-
Dear Steve,
with my friend we used your server to play a battle for our campaign. A few minutes ago during the battle his internet connection was lost. I used /localsave command to get "savegame.sav" file. He suggests finishing the fight tomorrow. Is any way how to resume the battle on your server in the moment we were interrupted?
Thanks for an answer
Martian
-
Well, if you email me the save file, I can put it back on the server.
For Future Use, use /save instead of /localsave and then you can use /load to load the saved game.
-
All right, thank you very much. I will remember it next time. Now it's not necessary, he just sent me an e-mail in which he incorporated it into campaign.
But just for the interest, I tried /save command after that and nothing happened. So if we wished to resume the fight, I would typed /load and then selected the file savegame.sav? Could he join already, or should he join after the savegame was loaded?
-
Looks like your servers are down (France time : 21h15 on the 18/02/11); on 35.19 and 35.21 (both).
-
Windy conditions here in wisconsin have been causing power outages all over the city. [strike]Server will be back up shortly.[/strike]
Edit: Servers are back up as of 4:56 pm central time
-
Thanks a lot :D !!

PROVISIONAL 35.22 server is running on port 2349
NOTE: This server is currently for testing purposes only. If it crashes, it crashes. I will not be reloading any autosaves from it, and from what I hear, .22 may have some issues that make it less reliable than .21, so if you're playing a game of any importance, I suggest using .21 or .19 instead. If the server is crashed, let me know and I'll restart it, but this instance is a provisional instance, and is a support non-priority.
-
Server Updated. 35.22 upgraded from provisional status to full status. running on 2346 and 2349.
-
Servers are down because the router machine died, and we're in emergency operations mode. we'll be trying to re-establish a proper configuration late this evening. Sorry for the inconvenience.
-
Server is Back Up.
It was the weirdest thing. I've been preparing a server upgrade for awhile now, and just hours after I migrated the last of the data from my old Main Server Ra, the harddrive died in it. Just after the IRC network where I'm staff performed an upgrade to a new ircd. So, I had to rapidly get my new setup going, but the router wasn't behaving quite the way I had hoped it would, and no one could load pages. So I had to put a temporary router up. Then, after hours when I had a chance to get ahold of my Guru, got the server working the way it was supposed to.
New Setup:
Anpu:
Pentium4 2.8ghz
256mb Ram
40gb HD
Debian Linux 6.0
Routing and Firewall duties.
Ghostwheel:
Pentium4 3.0ghz
2gb Ram
1tb HD
Debian Linux (Host) Debian Linux (GhostMain VM)
Virtual Server Host
Cthulhu:
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
1gb Ram
60gb HD
Debian Linux
Megamek, IRC Bot duties.

Just curious, because I'm running a persistent merc campaign using your servers (Which I, being a technical dumb-dumb, appreciate more than I could ever describe) is there any way to load custom units on to the server for use?
-
Custom Units are local to the client.
Custom Maps are Local to the Server (but to preview them, you need to have them in the client too)
Custom Camoflauge files are local to the client.
What I do, is i put my files, my camos, my maps, and my mechs into a megamek install, zip it back up, and put it up for my friends to grab, so that they have the same camos I do, and access to my custom mechs.
-
Hey Steve, thanks for the gamehost! Had a great game with Neko_Bijin the other night thanks to you.
Question, I just tried to log in to the same gameserver (2345) as I used 2 nights ago, and it lets me in (I can even see the ghosts from our last game session) but it immediately kicks me off. Wondering if we did something wrong when we were done? We just sorta closed out....
-
No, I'll cycle that one. Thanks for the heads up.
[edit]
Cycled.
-
Thanks! Is there a way I can tell it to cycle when I leave? I'm all about being a responsible community member.
-
if you'd like, you can /reset which will clear the board, and put it back to the lobby. but for a full cycle, you'd need command line access to the server.
There are certain errors that build up over time from bad connections and such, and its good to kill the server and start it back up now and then. I've been thinking of finding a way to automate that. I'm glad to see the servers are still getting used, too.
-
My internet access is my Evo4g and WiFi tether. There's no way to set up port forwarding for WiFi Tether, that I know of, and not all of my friends know how to monkey with their routers. So yeah, you're a lifesaver, and thanks! O0
-
Yeah, that'd be a pain. Glad its helpful for you. if it ever needs a reset and is totally stuck, email me at restless [a t] chaosgarden.net
-
So... Any word on when we'll get a server for 35.23?
I use your servers pretty much exclusivly as due to our setups most of the people I play with (and me) seem to have serious problems acting as servers ourselves, yours are a godsend really. Thanks.
For that matter... Anyone clue where I can find the maps on this server megamek doesn't have by default? They seem to be eluding me.
-
I have a provisional 35.23 server up, on 2349 but I haven't had time to do any preset-rules or maps on the instance. I'm still using 35.22 myself.
-

Thanks. Main draw of this version is the easier to use map setup (Tells you whether it's got maps in that on file or not) and most especially TRO 3085 units
BTW: The port 2346 seems to be malfunctioning at this time
-
Reset on 2346.
I'm thinking of redoing how I do my personal Megamek Package, but I have a dilemma.
the devs have seen fit to rename files to match the MUL, and for some reason the powers that be chose to name the MUL by IS Reporting Names for Clan Mechs. But all my customs are from the days when MM used the clan names for these mechs.
As far as my customs go, I seem to have 4 options:
1) stop using customs (unlikely)
2) rename all customs to match new naming scheme
3) copy all stock designs into my custom mechfiles zip, renaming them to match the proper names.
4) keep doing what I'm doing, which is just leaving things disorganized and entering mechset.txt info for the old names.
I'm also thinking of simplifying how I do my camos.
For camo files, you have to have the camo in the same place, on all clients. so if everyone has the same .zip full of camos, everyone sees it, or if everyone has the camos loose and uncompressed, everyone sees it. But, currently I have BOTH, for max compatability. I'm thinking of going with just one thing.
-
Thank you very much for these servers! It helps my group and I play where we otherwise have lots of connection issues.
If we leave a game that wasn't completely finished, is the '/reset' command all we need to do to clear the board? I wasn't sure how to end a game that didn't actually meet the victory conditions.
-
Yeah, /reset will clear the board and bring you back to the lobby.
if you ever come to the server and there's an abandoned game there, if you save it as User_User_mmddyy.sav or some other easily identified format before you /reset it, it can then be reloaded if the owners ever want to come back for it.
-
Updated, replacing 35.19 and 35.21 with two 35.24 instances.
-
I used this server to introduce some rookies. Thanks a million!
-
Many thanks for the server.
-
Always glad to see its getting use :D
Got an additional connection today, so we've got some redundancy available too now. :)
-
Heys guys, hoping someone can hlp me here. I recently re-DLd MM and my friend did the same. We want to connect with each other to play but we cant seem to connect. I forgot what im suppose to enter? Is he suppose to enter 127.0.0.1 or my IP machine addy? He is connecting through "Connect to a game"
35.24/2347
-
To connect to my dedicated server, enter 'mechadynamics.net' for the server and consult the first post of this thread for the port I'm running the version you want to connect to.
To connect to a server you're running, he would enter your internet ip address. if the ip looks something like 192.168.x.x, 10.0.x.x or 172.16.0.x then thats your internal IP address, and you'll have to find your external IP, and forward the port you're running MM on, to your internal IP, in your router's control panel
-
K, this is much better info then i got... how would i go about finding the external IP? And when i port forward, do i use the external ip?
-
The easiest way to find your external IP would be to go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ which will show it at the top of the page.
For port forwarding, you will need to forward the port to your internal IP (the one that looks like 192.168.x.x, 10.0.x.x or 172.16.0.x). http://portforward.com/ has guides that show how to set up port forwarding on a lot of different routers.
-
I go to whatismyip.com if I need to know what my external IP is. You'll need to provide this to your friend
to find your internal IP, hold the windows key and press R. type 'cmd' into the box that pops up, hit ok.
To forward a port, you need to tell the router what port, and what the internal address of the computer that it should send traffic on that port to, is. The method of doing this varies by model of router.
-
If it makes you feel any better, Chanman and I usually wind up using one at least once a week.
-
always glad to hear it :D
-
Servers moved to a new IP for the next week or so, while my roof is replaced. "mechadynamics.net" should still point there
-
I hope this isn't too much of a numbskull question, but when using the public server (thanks for the service!) how do you make sure you're playing against your friend? I didn't see any way to set up a game password, or to invite someone to a specific game.
-
Well, my servers are *JUST* dedicated server instances for vanilla megamek. You and your friend would arrange the game outside of megamek, and plan on meeting on a given port. my servers are open, first-come-first-serve, akin to the tennis courts at a park. if somebody's already using one, you can try another, or wait till one opens up. If all five or six that i have running are full, let me know. if it happens repeatedly, I may open more up. If the game appears to be abandoned, and no one is actually connected, /save the game in the format "player1_player2_mmddyy.sav" in case they want to reload it later, and you can use /reset to clear the abandoned game.
There's no matchmaking or inviting system, and no passwords on my dedicated servers.
-
Ah, thanks! Glad I wasn't just being oblivious :)
-
No problem! I've tried to get people to gather in a chatroom for arranging battles before, but megamek players seem to have an aversion to IRC or something...
-
Have you implemented a server for version 35.25 yet? Just curious.
Thanks again for making your server available.
-
same question but for .34.9?
-
same question but for .34.9?
If you read the very first post, you'll see there's a server for 34.9 ;) ...
-
but that would have prevented embaresing myself and looking like an idiot. I couldn't possibley do that.
-
Thanks for having the server up. Got to try the game vs. a human tonight!
-
35.26 is now up and running on 2346
35.24 is still running on 2347 and 2348
-
at Moonsword's Request a 35.25 server has been added on 2349
-
uhmmmmm......ok I know I haven't used MegaMek in quite a while but just tried to log in to Steve's Mechdynamics.net server with MM 34.9 and couldn't get in. Error message kept popping up! Is there an updated list of servers cause the last one I see on here is from January of last year. Thanx!
-Katana
P.S. Also just tried to connect using 35.26 on the server you posted for it. Got the same message. WTF?
-
As a general tech support rule, when you're reporting an error message, try to report what the error message was. You didn't actually say what it was at any point.
On checking myself using 35.26 to connect to port 2346, I get this error: "Error: could not connect to server mechadynamics.net:2346."
-

yep that would be the error I was getting on both of them
-
Couldn't find anything wrong on this end, but tests from outside were showing it as down, so I gave the machine a restart. Should be operational again.
Please note, the port list in the first post has changed slightly.

Cool! Thanx Steve and can we get an updated port list then?
-
the first post of the thread was updated when I changed the lineup
-
35.27 replacing 35.24 on port 2347
-
Hi there, sorry to bother you with that, but the game is really lagging in 2347 for 35.27. It's the second time a friend and I are playing and twice it has been lagging like a dead donkey pulled by the tail by a five year old kid.
Are we doing something wrong ??
Thanks for your efforts, for setting up the servers, it's really appreciated :) !
-
I am curious . Is the .25 version server locked up ? Log in and just see two Atlases staring at eachother?
-
OK reset it since no one would answer any queries
-
Yeah. best thing to do, if you find an abandoned game is to save it something like Player1Player2_Date.sav and then reset it
That way, if need be, the saved game can be restored, and you can reset the server
-
As I've noted in the initial post as well, if you need to get ahold of me for server issues or just wanna talk BT Stuff, I've registered #battletech on the espernet IRC network.
you can get there in a browser through http://webchat.esper.net/ and once connected, /join #Battletech
or, if you have an IRC client, the server is irc.esper.net, the port is 5555, 6667, or 7000, or 6697 for SSL
-
Will be shutting down a couple of the server instances in the near future, in anticipation of shifting the servers to a different machine while I do some maintenance and possibly upgrades. I've marked the ones slated for shutdown in the first post. There may be some total downtime involved as well, I'll try to minimize that.
-
Switched to the Backup Server. Cthulhu going down for maintenance.
-
35.28 out are you going to change the port for that?
-
35.28 will probably be added when the main server comes back up. The ports will likely be different at that time, check back here.
-
thanks steve
-
Normal operation restored. New Port List in the first post
-
Server restored from unexpected outage.
-
I'm getting a bit miffed about not being able to preview maps outside of a tiny minority. Could anyone tell me where I can find all the maps on the server for download?
-
http://restless.mechadynamics.net/megamek/ is where I put archives of megamek with all the stuff I add to it. You COULD download it and just extract the maps.
-
35.30 added! Hooray for Manual Shutdown! Hooray for UAC Unjamming options!
-
35.30 added! Hooray for Manual Shutdown! Hooray for UAC Unjamming options!
Steve, once 0.35.31 comes out upgrade the .30 server quickly. It has several critical bugs in it... especially relating to AeroSpace Fighters and Dropships.
-
Planning on it! Do we have a rough estimate of when .31 will be out so I can plan on doing the update?
-
Planning on it! Do we have a rough estimate of when .31 will be out so I can plan on doing the update?
Not really. Basically for the past 2 releases Bee has done them once we get a huge changelog. This has made them a lot closer together than other releases in recent time due to how I've been slamming out code... which I've slowed down some recently because life has been interfering ;)
So we'll see. :)
-
Alright, well, I'll be keeping a weather eye. I know bugfixes are important too, but I'm always far more excited about a new upgrade, and more likely to jump on it when it adds features :D Especially ones I've desired for some time. Should have seen my glee when it finally added Hardened Armor.
-
SVN Instance added.
35.30 being shut down soon.
Does anyone use the 34.9 Stable?
-
Does anyone use the 34.9 Stable?
It isn't really advised at this point.
-
Well, I know at one point we had people who preferred the stable for one reason or another. But it is pretty far out of date, isn't it?
-

If by "pretty far" you mean "horrifically", then yes, it's pretty far out of date.
-
alright, well, 35.31 going up soon. Old versions going down soon.
Two 35.31 servers active!
-
I salvaged some RAM that I'd like to put into the server, so I'd expect some server downtime in the near future. Just trying to decide when I should do it.
-
Server upgraded to 4gb RAM, 0.35.31 servers are running with additional memory allocated to their instances. Everything went smoothly.
-
Server updated to include Megamek 35.33 on 2345 and 2346. 35.31 continues to run on 2347.
-
Server Updated to 35.34 on port 2346. If no one seems to be using .31, and .34 proves stable, I'll be switching the .31 server on 2345 to .34 as well.
-
Made a mistake, had the domain name pointed in the wrong direction. Fixed it, but if the fix hasnt made its way to you yet, just use 69.129.174.11 or 67.53.188.198 instead.
-
Server is down. had a power outage, and some problems getting it back up following that. There's some family business thats taking precedence over getting the server back up and running. Thanks for your patience.
-
Server's back up.
-
Server has been updated to include 35.35, which replaces 35.31 on port 2347
33.33 and 33.34 remain on their existing ports, though I'm considering dropping .33 in favor of another instance of a newer version.
-
Server updated to include 35.36 on port 2345.
-
Thanks for the use of your server Steve. I'm using your 35.36 and I haven't been able to find any other servers to use as backups.
-
Always glad to hear its helping somebody out!
-
My brother and I connect to your server 35.36 (we are on the same version as the server 35.36) and we have issues where things disapear frequently and we have to refresh by maximizing and minimizing the window everytime we do an action. We can't move around the map with the right click. We can't right click mechs to see information about them. In order to move around the map we have to left click on the mini map and then refresh by maximizing or minimizing to see the effect of what we just did. It's the same for any action (firing, moving, etc.). We have to refresh constantly. During the setup screen, we have to do the same thing (refresh anytime we do something so that we can see what we did). Some things don't even work. We also have the same issue when he connects to me directly. Any ideas what the problem could be? Java is up to date.
-
Have you tried updated your graphics card drivers?
-
Yeah, my graphics driver is up to date. I have a fairly new computer too.
-
Sounds like a client-side issue. Something on your end causing it. Nothing about my server is going to cause screen-draw issues on your computer.
-
I didn't realize how out-dated my version was until I came here. Will 35.37 be up soon because that's the version I downloaded.
-
.37 will be up soon, yes. Its difficult to give an exact estimate. I may have some time yet tonight, or in the next couple days.
-
Preparing .37 now.
-
35.37 is up on port 2346. I'll also be replacing .36 within about a week, since its got a pretty big bug in its map loading code. Make sure to upgrade to 37.
-
Downloading Ralgith's Secret Blend of 11 Herbs and SVN versions, gonna add my secret sauce, and then I'll toss it up on my servers. SVN-35.39 is on the way
-
SVN 35.39 r9448 is now live on port 2345
-
SVN 35.39 r9448 is now live on port 2345
To clarify that's my "Secret Blend" that he mentioned ;)
You can get either that stand-alone version of MM in that revision, or you can use my MekHQ release which includes the exact same revision. If you get a timestamp mismatch error and it shows as being a few seconds different, don't worry about it. This is due to the delay between building the Linux build and the other builds on the system I built it on.
-
Steve! I know its been awhile since I've been around......ok so its been a loooooong while. LOL I just got the latest stable version downloaded. 34.10 do you have a server for that one?
-Katana (Snake Doc)

That stable is so out of date that it shouldn't really be considered stable anymore (unless you're also using a 3-4 year out of date version of java). I'd just download one of the DEV releases he has posted, since they'll work a lot better than the stable.
-
Thanx Jay

Server Updated to include 35.39 full version instead of SVN.
This, in accordance with murphys law, means we can probably expect a new version within a day or two. Every time I update :P

Knew it!
-
Is there a trick to changing the optional rules on the server? Every time I do it, they seem to always revert to the original setup.
-
what version is this occurring on? they should just change the usual way
-
I was on the 35.37 = 2346 server at the time.
Could the issue have been that I got in through the "connect to a game" option, as did my opponent?
Anyway, thanks so much for making this server available!
-
Huh, not what I was expecting. I'll give that one a reset, see if that resolves the issue. Otherwise, consider updating to a newer version.

I'll be outputting another of my SVN builds tomorrow at some point (Eastern Time), so that will be an option as soon as Steve adds it to his deds (if he does)
-
Currently got a massive game underway on the old port, so I moved the public 35.39 to 2348

Just a heads up. Server is showing way behind.
That looks like you're using the wrong version for the server. Steve is running 0.35.39 on that port and based on the client build date, I'd assume you're using 0.35.40.
-
Nope. I haven't downloaded that one. I saw the new one was up, but without a host server to play it, why bother ;)
We froze up and moved to .37, where the bot there said there was a date discrepancy in April...
-
I can't guarantee the clock on the server being right. I think the cmos battery is starting to fade.
.37 is running on 2346, .39 is on 2348, I haven't readied .40 yet (its on my to-do.).

Updated to include 35.40 on port 2347.

I can't guarantee the clock on the server being right. I think the cmos battery is starting to fade.
The time on the server shouldn't matter. The timestamp it references when that message appears is the timestamp from when the version of Megamek was compiled. If that message pops up it almost always means you're using wrong versions (except for if players are using Linux vs Windows vs Mac builds, but those are usually only seconds or minutes apart). The timestamps have nothing to do with local time/dates on the computer.

Actually this isn't 100% correct. When I wrote this code I forgot that it bases the time displayed on local time, so you also have to look at the timezone offsets. This should get fixed soon.
-
Well, I do always utilize the "linux" build. Server's linux, and I just run the same package on my windows machines, since I prefer launching from the .jar
-
Do you have a timeout set on your servers? If I'm inactive for more than a minute during other peoples turns, I get booted. I keep typing "Caw" to keep from getting booted, but sometimes it isn't enough.
-
Nothing I've instituted. If its happening on a particular instance, give me the version or port I can give it a reset to see if that fixes it, otherwise I'd suggest trying a different version of MM. I've had it lock on me before when I go idle for too long.
-
I've got a player that disconnects frequently; I think I've determined it usually is from his wireless connection and it will (very briefly) drop out but that will be enough to interrupt his connection to MM. Unfortunately it often doesn't tell him (or me) right away. Not sure if you could be in a similar situation or not though, Fatebringer.
-
I'm on a direct hardline ;)
-
It happens sometimes to me as well. Was setting up a game with Foxx yesterday, he had to AFK while I was putting together my bid, then I had to load it again cause my client froze. couple games later, I had to reset the server instance cause it hardlocked.
-
power outage has knocked me completely offline. No ETA on when the power, and hence, the server, will return.
-
coming up on nearly 24h of outage. My phone can scrape up a little internet, but thats all. no ETA on when we'll have power and connectivity back. Appleton got SMASHED by a freak storm, forecast just said cloudy, and we got three tornadoes. (I guess they meant funnel cloudy?)
sit tight, i'm sure the HPG Uplink will be back before long.

In the meantime I'll try and get my dedicated servers up and running again as soon as I wake up (just about to hit the sack at 2:50am)

The Best Part of Waking Up is power to your servers!
Went to sleep with a lamp on next to me, and about a half hour ago, suddenly, power!
We've got Power again, and hopefully it stays on. We've got internet to the servers, the TDS Metrocom tower seems to be back online. Time Warner's still down.
bringing the servers back up now!
-
Steve your awesome! Thanks for the server. Heads up to you and all. Were all mechheads over at www.teamcored.com your teamspeak server Is ts1.teamcored.com. Come play MWO, MegaMek, and Tactics along with other games!
-
Not much for teamspeak, personally, but glad the server's coming in handy for you. :)
-
.42 up on 2346
-
.43 is on 2348
which given my luck, means .44 will be out within the next 12-72 hours >_>
-
It's all about the even numbers ;)

Upgrading the server to Stable. Will be clearing out old dev versions soon. If there's one you require for something, let me know, otherwise I'm cleaning house.
-
Added the stable to the server, on 2345 and 2346, and copied in the map files.
-
Updated the server to include the new 37.0 Dev Version on port 2347
-
Packaged up my blend of MegaMek here http://www.mediafire.com/download/mw955dc6s4p9z8o/MegaMek37.1.zip (using MediaFire till I transit to a new webserver)
and its running on 2348

Oops? :P
My release is forthcoming.
-
No, no oops. just a faster download when everybody's after the file all at once.

I meant oops because I had thought you were basing your mix on top of mine ;)
-
Oh, I will be. You just haven't released in awhile, and I had no indication when you'd begin releasing again.

You must have missed the post that said I'd be back after finals & holidays were over :D
-
The holidays aren't over! We've still got two days before New Years! ;)
-
alright, so, the megamek server has seen better days. Its been struggling lately and I'm not entirely sure why. As such, I'm going to run fewer instances on the server.

Updated to 37.4 on 2346

NOTICE: Server Downtime is coming
I am in the process of reorganizing some of my server and hosting setup, and this will effect my MegaMek server. The exact nature and duration of the downtime is indeterminate. in addition, Cthulhu, the machine hosting the server, has grown old and unreliable, and I believe it is time for him to retire. Contact me on IRC, or post to the thread if you have any questions/comments/input/concerns/etc
-
Are there other servers to play on?
-
Do you know if there are any plans to use Alpha Strike rules in a megamek style format?
-
I've heard no indication that we should expect that soon.
-
After a longer-than-anticipated Hiatus, we have servers back online, two of them, running my 37.9 package.
These servers are running on a different machine than before, and this is a trial-run for how they will fare on this server. This comes with a couple of Caveats.
- Firstly, I don't know how well large games will run on this server. If you try a large game, save frequently and have a backup plan that does not include "Asking Steve to re-load the save on this server"
- Second, if things don't run well on here, we may have to go back to the drawing board.
- Third, if running the server has a negative impact on the performance of other tasks this machine is performing, or vice versa, we may have to go back to the drawing board.
With that in mind, enjoy!
-
How large is large?
-
Good question.
The test games have all been in the 15 on 15 range. Above that, Player Beware. I'm not saying it can't handle it, I just can't guarantee anything, and this is really more of a "well, I really ought to get something running, but good replacement hardware for the dead server hasn't come in yet." When I've the chance, I intend to test bigger than that, see how it fares, but for the time being, I wanted to put the warning out there.
-
Update on Server Usage Levels:
Ran a test-case, deploying a 50 point cluster, versus a 40 point cluster, and as deployment wore on, we were seeing 10-30 second delays in megamek taking and executing an order. That's on the order of twenty minutes to a half hour of time wasted per turn, per side. As such, I discourage using the current dedicated server for battalion/cluster (and above) scale fights. Best to keep it in the 15-20 (and below) units per side range on this server. I'll be doing testing on a different machine to see how it stacks up under different conditions, and eventually I'll have a server where, even if it still runs slow, the memory consumption and CPU monopolization issues we're seeing with cluster+ scale fights won't be an issue.
-
Server updated with 39.0 on 2346.
Currently on Vacation, but when I get home, on my to-do list is to set up one of my servers there as a second host, one more suitable for large-scale games.
-
Also, let me know if there is interest in my running a 38.x Stable instance too.
-

The next MekHQ release by me will have a version built atop the stable release, as well as one built with the dev release.
-
Yes Please... a 38.0 stable would be highly desirable...

And... I never did the stable version due to various... issues. lol.

well, I'm still on vacation, so expect the stable instance to go up sometime after i get home. probably after the 18th.

New Changes to the Server!
Discovered what was eating resources,it was mostly the double-blind calculations. Until the MM Developers smooth that out, please keep double blind games to 15 or 16 units per side. If you want to play with more than that, I encourage you to disable double-blind play or use a different dedicated server. If resource usage goes too high once more, I will have to reduce the number of active servers.
Since I can afford to run more servers under these constraints, I've got several server instances running with the default, vanilla, no-options-on rules. I've also got a server running with my usual "almost all the options on" ruleset.
Edit: Just got notified on IRC that it's more with sensors than doubleblind itsself. Will test double-blind without the sensor rules on.
-
The next release will have a large increase in speed for large battles with double blind / sensors. arlith's change resulted in a ca. 65 fold increase in performance for changing turns for his large testcase.

I've been talking to SteveRestless about this on IRC; he and JayOf9s were the ones who brought the issue to my attention.
It's worth pointing out that the 65 fold increase is comparing performance between a version where I had caused an issue and a version where I fixed things. Comparing performances between the fixed version and a version prior to my introduction of issues would yield a smaller speed increase, although things are faster than they were.
-
Yup. my poking around and trying to streamline cluster-scale battles is part of what instigated Arlith's optimizations. :)

And Ralgith trying to murder my poor battalion with 2 regiments is what instigated us to figure out that things were very broken. And after there'd been so much optimization for big fights several months ago!

Bah, about 2 regiments of mostly level 1 units against a reinforced battalion of almost complete Clan Tech and 2 Dropships... :P And you have about 1.5x my artillery too, with better skills.

I fully expect them to take 50%+ losses before they finally escape :P

The 2 regiments? I don't think they're fast enough to escape me.

No worries, I don't mind a little drift. :)
-
Steve, are you panning to update on of the servers to 39.5 dev or the stable 40.0?
-
yeah, I've been playing with a derivative of the dev that's had me distracted. I'll have an official update soon.
-
Updated!
-
Thanks, Steve!
-
Just wanted to say thanks for having this dedicated server up, finally got our old TT group together on MegaMek after more than 10 years.
-
Glad it's helpful for you!
-
Updated the server with a new pull from SVN and the official version of 41.3
-
hey steve how do I get access to you server and client?
-
The first post in this thread has the server connection information, and some links to where you can download my version of megamek. Right now, the most current package I've put together is 41.4-steveD which is within a revision of 41.4 official. You'll get a notice about client mismatch, but it's worked fine whenever I've had to use one with the other. As soon as I can get files from the sourceforge SVN server again (it hasn't been working lately) I'll be putting out a custom release based on the 41.5 code in progress.
But you don't need my version of megamek to connect to most of my server instances, the official packages will work as well, unless otherwise noted.
-
Thank you for continuing to provide us players of MegaMek a place to play, Steve.
-
Thanks for the support Wrangler :)

When will we be seeing you on Slack? :P We even have a dedicated_servers channel!

What is Slack?

What is Slack?
It's similar to IRC.

When a wolf devours the sun and the valiant fallen join the final battle beside the all father. When the mountains dry up and blow like leaves.
I'm an IRC administrator, inviting me to slack is like inviting a Davion to Sian. If I show up, it'll be with a few RCTs in tow. ;) Like inviting a pitbull to a cat convention.

I can always turn on the IRC connection capability in Slack, so you can use an IRC client if you're more comfortable :P

:P You're still inviting the Burger King to dine at McDonald's.

I've registered #Battletech on the Espernet IRC Network. If you need to reach me in a hurry about server issues, thats a good place to find me.
server: irc.esper.net ports 6667, 5555, 7000, or 6697 for ssl. #Battletech
Or, go here: http://webchat.esper.net/?nick=MechWarrior...&channels=Battletech&prompt=1
Alternately you can use this mibbit link: http://chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23battletech&server=irc.esper.net
@McSlayer, i usually either send message to Steve's forum mail or i go on to one these chat channels (usually in the afternoon) to try to contact him.
-
Not sure why, but a number of things, including some non-megamek stuff, weren't running. Server list restored.
-
So Steve... is there any chance we can get you to put one of the servers at a 0.42.0 Stable?
-
Probably Eventually. I've been short on spare time of late.
There's an even better chance of seeing a dev version pop up when they start coming out.
-
Host had to reboot for Meltdown/Spectre, so I updated the server as I brought it back up.
-
Hey Steve, I'm not sure what is going on with the server for megamek 0.43.7-rc1 but the game stopped working for some reason and I can no longer connect to it.
Aces Wild thanks you
Not sure what happened but the server is back up and operational now.
Thanks again
-
Greetings Steve,
great that you still keep a Server. We wanted to try it and we broke it. It is still transmitting game data (there was none to transmit though). :(
Is there a chance for a reboot?
Have a nice weekend anyway.
-
Server updated to 47.0 on 2346
-
Thanks for keeping these servers going, Steve.
-
Added 47.6 today, running on port 2347.
-
Updated Server to include 47.11 on port 2347
-
Mind if we add you to the official public servers at https://megamek.games Steve?
-
2346 updated to 49.0

2346 updated to 49.0
Hi, I recommend putting up 0.48.0 as the new stable. We are going to be switching to 49.1 very soon. 0.49.0 is a massively buggy release.

So noted. I've got to do some updates to the server so I can run a version of java that the new releases will be happy with anyway
-
We can also add them to the dedicated server list at https://megamek.games (https://megamek.games) as well if you're ok with that.
