Thanks! that saves me a little bit of work, but I do have to change a couple things, the forums went down right after I upgraded things to 35.21. Glad they're appreciated

2348 switched from 35.19 to 35.21

Had reports that that the 35.21 server is crashing and needing resets.  I STRONGLY URGE people to make sure they are connecting to the proper port with the proper version. Version Mismatch can cause instability and crashes. If the server crashes, please email restless@chaosgarden.net so I can reset it.

Dear Steve,

with my friend we used your server to play a battle for our campaign. A few minutes ago during the battle his internet connection was lost. I used /localsave command to get "savegame.sav" file. He suggests finishing the fight tomorrow. Is any way how to resume the battle on your server in the moment we were interrupted?

Thanks for an answer

Martian

Post by: SteveRestless on 16 February 2011, 20:33:07
Well, if you email me the save file, I can put it back on the server.

For Future Use, use /save instead of /localsave and then you can use /load to load the saved game.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: martian on 17 February 2011, 00:33:15
All right, thank you very much. I will remember it next time. Now it's not necessary, he just sent me an e-mail in which he incorporated it into campaign.

But just for the interest, I tried /save command after that and nothing happened. So if we wished to resume the fight, I would typed /load and then selected the file savegame.sav? Could he join already, or should he join after the savegame was loaded?

PROVISIONAL 35.22 server is running on port 2349

NOTE: This server is currently for testing purposes only. If it crashes, it crashes. I will not be reloading any autosaves from it, and from what I hear, .22 may have some issues that make it less reliable than .21, so if you're playing a game of any importance, I suggest using .21 or .19 instead. If the server is crashed, let me know and I'll restart it, but this instance is a provisional instance, and is a support non-priority.

Servers are down because the router machine died, and we're in emergency operations mode. we'll be trying to re-establish a proper configuration late this evening. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Server is Back Up.

It was the weirdest thing. I've been preparing a server upgrade for awhile now, and just hours after I migrated the last of the data from my old Main Server Ra, the harddrive died in it. Just after the IRC network where I'm staff performed an upgrade to a new ircd. So, I had to rapidly get my new setup going, but the router wasn't behaving quite the way I had hoped it would, and no one could load pages. So I had to put a temporary router up.  Then, after hours when I had a chance to get ahold of my Guru, got the server working the way it was supposed to.

New Setup:

Anpu:
Pentium4 2.8ghz
256mb Ram
40gb HD
Debian Linux 6.0
Routing and Firewall duties.

Ghostwheel:
Pentium4 3.0ghz
2gb Ram
1tb HD
Debian Linux (Host) Debian Linux (GhostMain VM)
Virtual Server Host

Cthulhu:
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
1gb Ram
60gb HD
Debian Linux
Megamek, IRC Bot duties.

Just curious, because I'm running a persistent merc campaign using your servers (Which I, being a technical dumb-dumb, appreciate more than I could ever describe) is there any way to load custom units on to the server for use?
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 25 April 2011, 17:27:55
Custom Units are local to the client.

Custom Maps are Local to the Server (but to preview them, you need to have them in the client too)

Custom Camoflauge files are local to the client.

What I do, is i put my files, my camos, my maps, and my mechs into a megamek install, zip it back up, and put it up for my friends to grab, so that they have the same camos I do, and access to my custom mechs.

Hey Steve, thanks for the gamehost! Had a great game with Neko_Bijin the other night thanks to you.

Question, I just tried to log in to the same gameserver (2345) as I used 2 nights ago, and it lets me in (I can even see the ghosts from our last game session) but it immediately kicks me off. Wondering if we did something wrong when we were done? We just sorta closed out....

Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 14 May 2011, 23:27:13
if you'd like, you can /reset which will clear the board, and put it back to the lobby. but for a full cycle, you'd need command line access to the server.

There are certain errors that build up over time from bad connections and such, and its good to kill the server and start it back up now and then. I've been thinking of finding a way to automate that. I'm glad to see the servers are still getting used, too.

My internet access is my Evo4g and WiFi tether. There's no way to set up port forwarding for WiFi Tether, that I know of, and not all of my friends know how to monkey with their routers. So yeah, you're a lifesaver, and thanks! O0

So... Any word on when we'll get a server for 35.23?

I use your servers pretty much exclusivly as due to our setups most of the people I play with (and me) seem to have serious problems acting as servers ourselves, yours are a godsend really. Thanks.

For that matter... Anyone clue where I can find the maps on this server megamek doesn't have by default? They seem to be eluding me.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread

I have a provisional 35.23 server up, on 2349 but I haven't had time to do any preset-rules or maps on the instance. I'm still using 35.22 myself.

Thanks. Main draw of this version is the easier to use map setup (Tells you whether it's got maps in that on file or not) and most especially TRO 3085 units

BTW: The port 2346 seems to be malfunctioning at this time
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread

Reset on 2346.

I'm thinking of redoing how I do my personal Megamek Package, but I have a dilemma.

the devs have seen fit to rename files to match the MUL, and for some reason the powers that be chose to name the MUL by IS Reporting Names for Clan Mechs. But all my customs are from the days when MM used the clan names for these mechs.

As far as my customs go, I seem to have 4 options:

1) stop using customs (unlikely)
2) rename all customs to match new naming scheme
3) copy all stock designs into my custom mechfiles zip, renaming them to match the proper names.
4) keep doing what I'm doing, which is just leaving things disorganized and entering mechset.txt info for the old names.

I'm also thinking of simplifying how I do my camos.

For camo files, you have to have the camo in the same place, on all clients. so if everyone has the same .zip full of camos, everyone sees it, or if everyone has the camos loose and uncompressed, everyone sees it. But, currently I have BOTH, for max compatability. I'm thinking of going with just one thing.

Thank you very much for these servers!  It helps my group and I play where we otherwise have lots of connection issues.

If we leave a game that wasn't completely finished, is the '/reset' command all we need to do to clear the board? I wasn't sure how to end a game that didn't actually meet the victory conditions.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 12 June 2011, 14:54:44
Yeah, /reset will clear the board and bring you back to the lobby.

if you ever come to the server and there's an abandoned game there, if you save it as User_User_mmddyy.sav or some other easily identified format before you /reset it, it can then be reloaded if the owners ever want to come back for it.

Heys guys, hoping someone can hlp me here. I recently re-DLd MM and my friend did the same. We want to connect with each other to play but we cant seem to connect. I forgot what im suppose to enter? Is he suppose to enter 127.0.0.1 or my IP machine addy? He is connecting through "Connect to a game"

35.24/2347
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 11 July 2011, 22:38:35
To connect to my dedicated server, enter 'mechadynamics.net' for the server and consult the first post of this thread for the port I'm running the version you want to connect to.

To connect to a server you're running, he would enter your internet ip address. if the ip looks something like 192.168.x.x, 10.0.x.x or 172.16.0.x  then thats your internal IP address, and you'll have to find your external IP, and forward the port you're running MM on, to your internal IP, in your router's control panel
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: Isaac Cameron-Wolf on 11 July 2011, 22:44:56
K, this is much better info then i got... how would i go about finding the external IP? And when i port forward, do i use the external ip?
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: slickam on 12 July 2011, 00:15:59
The easiest way to find your external IP would be to go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ which will show it at the top of the page.

For port forwarding, you will need to forward the port to your internal IP (the one that looks like 192.168.x.x, 10.0.x.x or 172.16.0.x).  http://portforward.com/ has guides that show how to set up port forwarding on a lot of different routers.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 12 July 2011, 01:48:48
I go to whatismyip.com if I need to know what my external IP is. You'll need to provide this to your friend

to find your internal IP, hold the windows key and press R.  type 'cmd' into the box that pops up, hit ok.

To forward a port, you need to tell the router what port, and what the internal address of the computer that it should send traffic on that port to, is. The method of doing this varies by model of router.

I hope this isn't too much of a numbskull question, but when using the public server (thanks for the service!) how do you make sure you're playing against your friend? I didn't see any way to set up a game password, or to invite someone to a specific game.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 17 August 2011, 15:21:09
Well, my servers are *JUST* dedicated server instances for vanilla megamek. You and your friend would arrange the game outside of megamek, and plan on meeting on a given port. my servers are open, first-come-first-serve, akin to the tennis courts at a park. if somebody's already using one, you can try another, or wait till one opens up. If all five or six that i have running are full, let me know. if it happens repeatedly, I may open more up. If the game appears to be abandoned, and no one is actually connected, /save the game in the format "player1_player2_mmddyy.sav" in case they want to reload it later, and you can use /reset to clear the abandoned game.

There's no matchmaking or inviting system, and no passwords on my dedicated servers.

As a general tech support rule, when you're reporting an error message, try to report what the error message was.  You didn't actually say what it was at any point.

On checking myself using 35.26 to connect to port 2346, I get this error: "Error: could not connect to server mechadynamics.net:2346."

Yeah. best thing to do, if you find an abandoned game is to save it something like Player1Player2_Date.sav and then reset it

That way, if need be, the saved game can be restored, and you can reset the server

As I've noted in the initial post as well, if you need to get ahold of me for server issues or just wanna talk BT Stuff, I've registered #battletech on the espernet IRC network.

you can get there in a browser through http://webchat.esper.net/ and once connected, /join #Battletech

or, if you have an IRC client, the server is irc.esper.net, the port is 5555, 6667, or 7000, or 6697 for SSL

Steve, once 0.35.31 comes out upgrade the .30 server quickly. It has several critical bugs in it... especially relating to AeroSpace Fighters and Dropships.

Not really. Basically for the past 2 releases Bee has done them once we get a huge changelog. This has made them a lot closer together than other releases in recent time due to how I've been slamming out code... which I've slowed down some recently because life has been interfering ;)

So we'll see. :)

Alright, well, I'll be keeping a weather eye.  I know bugfixes are important too, but I'm always far more excited about a new upgrade, and more likely to jump on it when it adds features :D Especially ones I've desired for some time. Should have seen my glee when it finally added Hardened Armor.

My brother and I connect to your server 35.36 (we are on the same version as the server 35.36) and we have issues where things disapear frequently and we have to refresh by maximizing and minimizing the window everytime we do an action.  We can't move around the map with the right click.  We can't right click mechs to see information about them.  In order to move around the map we have to left click on the mini map and then refresh by maximizing or minimizing to see the effect of what we just did.  It's the same for any action (firing, moving, etc.).  We have to refresh constantly.  During the setup screen, we have to do the same thing (refresh anytime we do something so that we can see what we did).  Some things don't even work.  We also have the same issue when he connects to me directly.  Any ideas what the problem could be?  Java is up to date.

To clarify that's my "Secret Blend" that he mentioned ;)

You can get either that stand-alone version of MM in that revision, or you can use my MekHQ release which includes the exact same revision. If you get a timestamp mismatch error and it shows as being a few seconds different, don't worry about it. This is due to the delay between building the Linux build and the other builds on the system I built it on.

That stable is so out of date that it shouldn't really be considered stable anymore (unless you're also using a 3-4 year out of date version of java). I'd just download one of the DEV releases he has posted, since they'll work a lot better than the stable.

That looks like you're using the wrong version for the server. Steve is running 0.35.39 on that port and based on the client build date, I'd assume you're using 0.35.40.

The time on the server shouldn't matter. The timestamp it references when that message appears is the timestamp from when the version of Megamek was compiled. If that message pops up it almost always means you're using wrong versions (except for if players are using Linux vs Windows vs Mac builds, but those are usually only seconds or minutes apart). The timestamps have nothing to do with local time/dates on the computer.

Actually this isn't 100% correct. When I wrote this code I forgot that it bases the time displayed on local time, so you also have to look at the timezone offsets. This should get fixed soon.

Do you have a timeout set on your servers? If I'm inactive for more than a minute during other peoples turns, I get booted. I keep typing "Caw" to keep from getting booted, but sometimes it isn't enough.

Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: SteveRestless on 01 August 2013, 12:41:11
Nothing I've instituted. If its happening on a particular instance, give me the version or port I can give it a reset to see if that fixes it, otherwise I'd suggest trying a different version of MM. I've had it lock on me before when I go idle for too long.
Title: Re: Steve's Dedicated Server Thread
Post by: Jayof9s on 01 August 2013, 12:47:05
I've got a player that disconnects frequently; I think I've determined it usually is from his wireless connection and it will (very briefly) drop out but that will be enough to interrupt his connection to MM. Unfortunately it often doesn't tell him (or me) right away. Not sure if you could be in a similar situation or not though, Fatebringer.

After a longer-than-anticipated Hiatus, we have servers back online, two of them, running my 37.9 package.

These servers are running on a different machine than before, and this is a trial-run for how they will fare on this server. This comes with a couple of Caveats.

- Firstly, I don't know how well large games will run on this server. If you try a large game, save frequently and have a backup plan that does not include "Asking Steve to re-load the save on this server"

- Second, if things don't run well on here, we may have to go back to the drawing board.

- Third, if running the server has a negative impact on the performance of other tasks this machine is performing, or vice versa, we may have to go back to the drawing board.

With that in mind, enjoy!

The test games have all been in the 15 on 15 range. Above that, Player Beware. I'm not saying it can't handle it, I just can't guarantee anything, and this is really more of a "well, I really ought to get something running, but good replacement hardware for the dead server hasn't come in yet." When I've the chance, I intend to test bigger than that, see how it fares, but for the time being, I wanted to put the warning out there.

Update on Server Usage Levels:

Ran a test-case, deploying a 50 point cluster, versus a 40 point cluster, and as deployment wore on, we were seeing 10-30 second delays in megamek taking and executing an order. That's on the order of twenty minutes to a half hour of time wasted per turn, per side. As such, I discourage using the current dedicated server for battalion/cluster (and above) scale fights. Best to keep it in the 15-20 (and below) units per side range on this server. I'll be doing testing on a different machine to see how it stacks up under different conditions, and eventually I'll have a server where, even if it still runs slow, the memory consumption and CPU monopolization issues we're seeing with cluster+ scale fights won't be an issue.

Server updated with 39.0 on 2346.

Currently on Vacation, but when I get home, on my to-do list is to set up one of my servers there as a second host, one more suitable for large-scale games.

New Changes to the Server!

Discovered what was eating resources,it was mostly the double-blind calculations. Until the MM Developers smooth that out, please keep double blind games to 15 or 16 units per side. If you want to play with more than that, I encourage you to disable double-blind play or use a different dedicated server. If resource usage goes too high once more, I will have to reduce the number of active servers.

Since I can afford to run more servers under these constraints, I've got several server instances running with the default, vanilla, no-options-on rules. I've also got a server running with my usual "almost all the options on" ruleset.

Edit: Just got notified on IRC that it's more with sensors than doubleblind itsself. Will test double-blind without the sensor rules on.

The next release will have a large increase in speed for large battles with double blind / sensors. arlith's change resulted in a ca. 65 fold increase in performance for changing turns for his large testcase.

I've been talking to SteveRestless about this on IRC; he and JayOf9s were the ones who brought the issue to my attention.

It's worth pointing out that the 65 fold increase is comparing performance between a version where I had caused an issue and a version where I fixed things.  Comparing performances between the fixed version and a version prior to my introduction of issues would yield a smaller speed increase, although things are faster than they were.

And Ralgith trying to murder my poor battalion with 2 regiments is what instigated us to figure out that things were very broken. And after there'd been so much optimization for big fights several months ago!

Bah, about 2 regiments of mostly level 1 units against a reinforced battalion of almost complete Clan Tech and 2 Dropships... :P And you have about 1.5x my artillery too, with better skills.

The first post in this thread has the server connection information, and some links to where you can download my version of megamek. Right now, the most current package I've put together is 41.4-steveD which is within a revision of 41.4 official. You'll get a notice about client mismatch, but it's worked fine whenever I've had to use one with the other. As soon as I can get files from the sourceforge SVN server again (it hasn't been working lately) I'll be putting out a custom release based on the 41.5 code in progress.

But you don't need my version of megamek to connect to most of my server instances, the official packages will work as well, unless otherwise noted.

I'm an IRC administrator, inviting me to slack is like inviting a Davion to Sian. If I show up, it'll be with a few RCTs in tow.  ;) Like inviting a pitbull to a cat convention.

I've registered #Battletech on the Espernet IRC Network. If you need to reach me in a hurry about server issues, thats a good place to find me.
server: irc.esper.net ports 6667, 5555, 7000, or 6697 for ssl. #Battletech

Or, go here: http://webchat.esper.net/?nick=MechWarrior...&channels=Battletech&prompt=1

Alternately you can use this mibbit link: http://chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23battletech&server=irc.esper.net

@McSlayer, i usually either send message to Steve's forum mail or i go on to one these chat channels (usually in the afternoon) to try to contact him.
