Site down again?
« on: 21 June 2017, 17:22:36 »
So we seemed to have had a 2 day outage..  What was up this time?

Don't know at this point. If we get any word, we'll let you know.

(Backend server support handles a lot more than just this forum, and we, the forum management team, don't see into that side of things. If the problem was there, we have to wait to find out too.)

It does this overnight pacific time too, where it just goes unresponsive for a few hours pretty much every night.  This outage just lasted a lot longer than usual.

The nightly one I figured was a web server rebooting.  This was a bit longer.

they explained the nightly access issue.
basically its that from ~1-2 AM PST the server is doing some kind of maintenance that effectively takes the server offline, I am not sure why that is the case but its what happens.

Might be something like database backups. It's pretty sensible to make sure your DB is still before doing a full backup to tape, or offsite.

Alternatively, they get the hamster to punch holes in tape for the backup ;)
