Miniature of the Fortnight #92: Quickdraw
« on: 15 April 2020, 09:36:45 »
(Reposted after fixing an error on my side.  Sorry for the delay.)

I never figured out how to use the Quickdraw, or maybe the problem is I'm just bad at using harassing units.  I've never claimed to be any good at this game... but this is beside the point.

This fortnight we're looking at... the Quickdraw.  (What a surprise!)  The Quickdraw is one of the "fast" heavy 'Mechs from Technical Readout: 3025 and has stayed with us since then, sort of a prototype of the heavy cavalry 'Mechs that would become more prevalent after the Clan Invasion.  Like I said, I'm not any good at using it in game, so look at its 'Mech of the Week article.

The Quickdraw has had four notable sculpts:
  • The original sculpt (20-872).
  • The beginners set sculpt, which may simply be the original sculpt on an integral (available in the Support Lance pack from IWM, 10-043).
  • The plastic sculpt distributed by CGL in the previous beginners set box and the Striker Lance Pack, based on the beginners set sculpt.
  • The sculpt for the QKD-8P model from Technical Readout: Prototypes (20-5178).
If you have any of these minis painted, please post pictures.  We'd love to see them!

As always, thank you for reading and a special thank you to those of you who will post pictures.

Our next two fortnights will be:
  • Clan (4/27): Black Lanner and Night Gyr
  • Inner Sphere (5/11): Raven and Raven II

I am surprised to find I have pics of four Quickdraws.  One metal original sculpt (the one in white), and three plastics.  Apologies for the quality of the photos on the first two plastics.  Hadn't gotten that figured out yet then and I don't own the two minis any longer to take better pics.

I'm trying to show the pic but...
https://photos.app.goo.gl/iM9Y8vc5gRGfK5Yo8

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but clearly im failing to follow https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=68739.0#lastPost Worktroll's instructions to the letter.

1) The first QDK (with the bright orange base) I don't remember what I was doing other than OPFOR colors?

2) The 2nd one (Red with white) I did like over 2 decades ago. Again I don't remember what the goal was, other than play with feathering in a clearly novice manner.

3) 3rd one I'm sure I painted at the same time as the 2nd, but clearly it was supposed to be a DCMS-theme (most of my older REDS are)

4) 4th is House Colors and was done in the past decade. Yes, you could vaguely call them Marik scheme but that wasn't the angle. Just for having unique colors for my wife & minion-who-played.

5) 5th is from the one of the box sets from this previous decade. My kid tried his hand at painting and... prompted devoted his artist skills to other things. I just painted over it and made it into my cheese Lyran scheme.

you can tell when one can of sealant from another, just by looking at whether or not its shiney or not. Enjoy! No, they are clearly not the greatest jobs but it's what I used to do before marriage gave me other things to worry about...

Yes, the link worked, Google just doesn't seem to let us post pictures in forums and I'm still mad at them for killing Picasa.  The red and slate/blue/purple (3rd and 4th) are my favorites!

there's something very militia/pirate like for the 2nd one.  I like it.

Picasa! that was the program I used to have on my old PC.  I really liked it.

There we go! Can others see ThePW's Quickdraw? The missing step may be you have to click on and open the individual photo in Google Photos, then "Copy Image Address". The image URL should be a big bowl of alphanumeric soup; do "quote" this message to see what I mean.

And ... some more Quickdraws!

So from the left ...
QKD-4H from the Magistracy Cavaliers, MAF
QKD-4H from 12th Galedon Regulars, DCMS
QKD-5A from Waco's Rangers
QKD-4H from Beta Regiment, 1st Division, ComStar (Jolly Rogers)
QKD-5M, 2nd St Ives Lancers
QKD-8X, Erthwerks
QKD-5Mr, IV Legio, MHAF
QKD-5KR, 3rd Filtvelt Defenders, FDF

And for fun, a couple of shots of the 8X:

* No, FASA wasn't big on errata - ColBosch
* The Housebook series is from the 80's and is the foundation of Btech, the 80's heart wrapped in heavy metal that beats to this day - Sigma
* To sum it up: FASAnomics: By Cthulhu, for Cthulhu - Moonsword
* Because Battletech is a conspiracy by Habsburg & Bourbon pretenders - MadCapellan
* The Hellbringer is cool, either way. It's not cool because it's bad, it's cool because it's bad with balls - Nightsky
* It was a glorious time for people who felt that we didn't have enough Marauder variants - HABeas2, re "Empires Aflame"

The Marian one? I just got tired of the pumpkin head.

The 8X uses hand-held weapons, and a lift hoist to carry spares.

I've have three of these.

Davion - Sakhara Military Academy

These first two were done in the early 90s.

Davion - Albion Military Academy

This one was done in the late 2000s/early 2010s. There are things I don't like about it, but the cockpit is probably one of my top 5 favorite right now.
