Kingdom Hearts 3... is good. Maybe even great, but I refuse to make that call until I finish playing it.
I'm shocked. I mean, how many game series have had THIS many midquels and re-releases and overhype and far too much obscure lore and toxic fandoms and STILL turned out even ADEQUATE sequels, let alone highly playable and entertaining ones?
And that involve some of the latest Disney properties as kinda-blatant plugs?
There are moments when I've been annoyed (screw you, Olaf! SKIP SCENE PLS), and some where I've been confused BECAUSE of all that stacked-up lore in KH games that I didn't play and didn't care to. But it's been legitimately entertaining almost all the way through, with some great design choices and worlds that could be their own game ENTIRELY - the Pirates world has a solid sailing and exploration mechanic that could easily serve as the foundation for a game by itself!
The fascinating thing for me is how they integrate the worlds into the actual PLOT of Kingdom Hearts - which is basically about how the villains are trying to use souls of stories and the heroes of those stories to fuel their ambitions. (Replace every instance of the word 'heart' with 'soul' to get an idea of the actual scope of the story). Take the Pirates world, where part of the original plot is that Davy Jones has pulled his heart out and put it in a box. Since in KH lore doing that makes you into a Heartless, the villains are quite interested to see HOW he accomplished this feat and want to find his heart to study it and replicate it.
The only non-core game that you HAVE to play not to be confused a little is, I think, Birth By Sleep - which I did NOT play, but is available on the KH2.8 ver5 Super Final Impressive Remix which I do own (as a gift) but never got around to doing anything with. The overarching plot involves characters from that game.
But KH3 does an adequate job of covering who those characters are, I think, though it is a bit hard to take seriously exposition coming from Mickey Mouse's voice.
