Peculiar SSW 'problem'...just sort of weird, that's all.
« on: 11 February 2011, 19:24:13 »
Skyhigh,

I originall installed SSW (latest version) on my desktop, along with data files and everything has been fine.

I thought I would clean up my desktop a little and I tried to move it off the desktop into another directory and it wouldn't find the data files.  I uninstalled, and reinstalled clean (both the program and the data files) and there was no joy.  The program refused to acknowledge the data files in SSW Master.

I reinstalled (clean) on the desktop, as I had done originally, and *poof* now it works perfectly again.  Any suggestions?  Have you run into this before?

you need to re-teach the program where to find the 'Mech files is the only thing I can think of. Since its just a Java file you really aren't installing anything.

Well...I tried that.  I did a complete, fresh install of both the program and the SSW Master file and pointed in the right direction...reboot...the works.  For some reason it wouldn't take.  I had to reinstall the files on my desktop again and now it works.

Weird.

I had a similar problem when I moved SSW: it just wouldn't start.  I deleted the folder and started cleaning out my registry, which found several SSW-related files.  My guess is that it makes some registry entries when you first run it, then refers to those when you try to run it afterwards.  If things don't match up, it fails.

Why it needs to make those registry entries is another question entirely.  ???

Track 'em down and maybe I can tell you... typically they get used to identify the install folder which is then used as a relative point when the code needs to refer to a specific file.  Its a good way of managing things such as users having multiple versions installed, multiple drives in use, etc., even in Java.

That has to be it.  I might give that a shot.

Hey guys, if you move where the Mech files are you will need to tell SSW where they are.  To do this you can go to the open dialog window and hit the icon that looks like two file folders and if you hover it will say "Change Directories".

Click that, then browse to the new location and hit Choose Directory.  That will load all your 'Mech files again.  You will prob have to change your default image directory too which can be done on the options screen under the Program tab.

These settings are saved in different places depending on your OS.  In windows it's stored in the registry because that's how windows does it <shrug>.

Be aware that you cannot move the Jar files by themselves.  If you want to move SSW you have to move the ENTIRE directory and all subdirectories.

If you have any questions feel free to hit me at skyhigh@solarisskunkwerks.com as I just happened upon your post here. =)
