TSM
« on: 10 October 2013, 10:54:47 »
So, I was reading over TRO:3145 and I have been noticing mechs with TSM look something like this:

Walking MP: 5(6)
Running MP: 8(9)

But reading over my copy of TW, I noticed that TSM is supposed to increase walking MP by 2

Quote
Increase the 'Mech's walking MP by 2 and recalculate its Running MP
- Page 143 TW 3rd Printing.

So why do all of these mechs in the TROs only increase the Walking MP by 1?

Because by the time you activate TSM, you're already taking a -1 MP penalty for heat.

That makes sense.  I misunderstood.  I thought the +2 was instead of the -1.

Its obvious now...

It used to be a +1 with no -1 at 5 heat, but they changed things, making TSM less useful

It also causes problems if you find a way to activate TSM without raising the 'Mechs internal heat level

Huh?
There's no difference whatsoever.

He may have operated under the mistaken impression that TSM-equipped 'mechs got to ignore the movement penalties at 5-8 heat even if they were below 9 heat. This has never been the case.

Actually, Industrial TSM doesn't require the heat level to go up.  Granted, it's not as good in other ways.  And the original TSM didn't require the heat level to go up...it just combusted in the presence of a certain type of gas.

*Double checks old rules*
That's what I thought the rules USED to be, you ignored the -1 from 5 plus heat, I simply didn't remember that that only happened at 9+ heat

I remember that. Used to think you ignored the heat movement penalties for it too.

Which makes me want to use the original TSM.

Nope, the original TSM is the current one, the rule has simply been better written.
From the BMR, p 148 (Guh, I had not opened that volume for ages!  ;D)
Quote
[snip]...If a mech is equipped with TSM, for each turn it ends with a heat level of 9 or higher, the following effects take place the next turn:

Ignore the -1MP heat effect at 5 on the heat scale (bit apply all other movement heat modifiers to movement. In addition, increase the walking MP by 1 and recalculate running accordingly.... the walking MP modifiers are summarized on the TSM movement modifiers table...[snip]

Not quite foxbat, if some new technology comes along that allows TSM to be activated without building up heat (And that would not be surprising, surely there's at least one group somewhere working on it) TSM will then provide two extra points of MP compared to one

If that is ever the case, I'm certain (or at least hoping) it will come with rule clarifications on how many MP you actually get.

The current rules are quite clear, you get 2 bonus MP

Try TSM with a Super Charger for mechs it increases the speed when you need it in a pinch and deals with those players who like to play with your heat with Plasma Rifles and Infernal rounds .

I am suprised that TSM is not used in tandem with Superchargers more often .
