Light mechs survive by speed alone and justified by the existence of the floating crit . The expense of the engine makes the light mech not very cost effective vs the same cost in combat vehicles . If your game eliminates or uses an alternate floating crit rule , it eliminates the light mech as a go to mech . With the advent of fuel cell engines the combat vehicle becomes much more attractive. Medium and heavier mechs are still good or great and far outstrip combat vehicles for cost vs efficacy .
