Choosing a path forward
« on: 17 September 2014, 16:58:16 »
(Related to- http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,36888.0.html)

Feb 3133
A Union and Seeker dropship are landing on the plain north of a NETC refurbishment site which has some RAF equipment and stockpiles of weapons along with skilled techs.  The political situation on the planet has degenerated as civil tensions has ratcheted up among the civilians and military.

The Union broadcast a signal from Prefect Katana Tormak calling on all individuals of Draconis Combine heritage to return to take up the cause of the Dragon.  She called on the Site #7 security to surrender rather than fight against the inevitable.

Republican Governor Carter repudiated the broadcast calling Tormak a traitor to the ideals of Stone and declaring Lyons would resist the 'Dragon's Fury' invasion.  She also quietly passed along and endorsed a proposal from the Bannson Universal Unlimited representative's offer of assistance in consideration for future support to BUU security.  She did not say she would send the Guard to support NETC security nor was there any statement from her pet 'Legate.'

The head of NETC security also has a conversation with the Lyon Standing Guard's commanding officer explaining his intention of extending his defensive perimeter to the NETC facility but would consider agreement of joint defense to tacit approval of nationalization of the facility and staff.  Colonel Mazoli said he could not wait very long to move to new positions, no mention was made of the Governor's replacement Legate.

Finally, the remaining NETC staff had also received a offer of support from the inspector team sent by Landgrave Jasek Kelswa-Steiner.  While not detailing what sort of material support they could offer, they did extend the offer of support that would not disrupt NETC's autonomy in return for some consideration in support of the Skyle Militia in the future.

A potentially hostile force is coming, judging by the dropships they would outmass and outnumber NETC's site security, without much support from the divided planet the NETC staff called home.  Unable to pack up and run with the materials stockpile . . .

Which choice would you make?

I voted fro the BUU option, but I am also biased.

With that being said, the BUU option makes the most sense to me for the NETC security forces. They're cut off, communications-wise from the rest of the coporation which limits their options. BUU represents an (outwardly) politically neutral option that's pro planetary security. That allows NETC to cover their arses without commiting to anyhting that, at least outtwardly, would take their security forces or commitments beyond Lyons.

agreed the banson one looks to be the best choice..
surrender would mean failing in their job.
they wouldn't have the authority to allow NETC to be nationalized, and even if they did, that is a bad option since it also means they failed in their job.
and the offer from landgrave steiner is long on promises, short on actual commitment.

the banson one, while not ideal, comes from a seemingly neutral party, and one that would seem to pose the least risk in terms of future commitments.

at least, given what is known at the time.

The Dragon Fury's offer is a dead end that will probably include inspecting the drop ship's air locks without a Vaccsuit.

The other offers are good, but not great.  They are all hoping to benefit from acquiring the facility without spending resources and materials that can't be replaced.

My vote is to remain independent as long as possible and wait for a better offer.  The attacking group is actually facing a Victory where they might lose more than they will gain.  Likewise, my first thought was "can we hijack the drop ships and abscond with them?"

Sure, offer to load the ships while their larger ground force keeps the other factions away.  Then just have good timing.

Well, the vote is to stay independent . . . which is going to make things interesting!

Self defense with it turned out everything they could throw at the Dragon's Fury.

Three of the heavy APCs on site had been turned into SP Guns mounting UAC/5s.  The Bolla Stealth Tank had a Gauss Rifle put in the turret, which is one of the weapons NETC has quite a few of and can easily produce ammunition.  Some of the ammunition stocks and rocket components were turned into impromptu minefields to cover the defensive position's flanks, this turned out to be a key factor.

The Dragon's Fury was turned back with the loss of a Bellona hovertank (minefield blew the skirts), DI Morgan Assault Tank (mines, Jenner attacks immobilized and opened up a side), and a Centurion B Omni that was already missing its HPPC arm took over 100 points of damage as the Fury were retreating.  3 Gauss Rifle strikes, a UAC/10 double tap, 2 Clan ERLL, other lasers, missiles and LBX pellets ripped off the legs, breached the side torsos (engine kill was first) and Meghan Bruce destroyed the head with a IS ERLL hit from her Shockwave.  The elite Bellona crew was recovered by Dragon's Fury SAR while the DI Morgan's veterans were captured by security Ogres.  Dragon's Fury forces were moderately damaged overall though it ranged from the CO's Grand Dragon which was untouched to the Marauder 9M2 which had lost one arm and nearly the other along with torso damage.

NETC Security took losses as well, the Centurion managed to connect several times with its HPPC, the most devastating strike was to the cockpit of the armed ConstructionMech (bit of overkill), one of the converted tracked heavy APCs was also destroyed though some crew survived.  The Marauder II 6D mod took heavy damage- open torso, 1 engine hit, armor into the yellow- but was the anchor the Fury focused fire on yet put out a lot of damage.  The Bolla Stealth Tank, which for some reason I could not get the Stealth to work in MM and thus a fun quirk, took moderate damage from a hull down position- turret and glacis armor into the yellow.  The Jenner IIC 4 which harried the column of assault tanks moving down the road (slowing each by at least 1 MP, so 3/5 to 2/3) ended up with several gauss slugs in its direction among other things.  One took off a arm with its ATM launcher while missile and lasers damaged its legs, it ended the fight as barely moving scrap but kept 4 assault tanks off the defensive line with the assistance of minefields.

So even with the win, the only thing that can be made immediately operational from salvage would be the Bellona.  The Centurion is definitely a hanger queen, and the DI Morgan can be made operational but . . .

To start with there were only 19 tons of various armor to start with (Std, FF, HFF, LFF) and no Clan FF which the Jenner requires.  No future source of armor is readily apparent and the ability to produce tons of it at the site is really in question.  Not taking place in this fight was the Wolverine II 7H, as that pilot fought the Marauder II 6D mod, so the Jenner pilot is not dispossessed.

It will be determined on rolls to see if the Dragon's Fury force is intercepted and if so any losses.  The political situation on Lyons is coming to a head and if it breaks out into fighting everyone will want to claim the NETC storehouses . . . and the defenders are in bad shape.

What's your dropship acces like? Is it worth trying to get a message to the rest of NETC off world and requesting help?
I'd suggest that and begin to dig in - because the Legate is going to coem at you soon. Probably with off world support from Bannson's Raiders.
Expand that mine field of you can and prepare fighting positions.
I'd suggest turning the damaged tanks into pillboxes - dig them in hull down and build fortifications around them.
That way you can soak up some damage and then the crew can abandon ship.

If help is not forthcoming from the rest of the company you're going to have to look at fighting your way to the drop port and hijacking some transport.

I doubt you can win a stand up fight against the Standing Guard (hold them off in your dug in positions yes. Assault the capital and win? No)
Plus, you've got the added issue of not wanting to fire on your own countrymen.

I'd suggest trying to fight your way off world

No dropships, the other thread gets into the company man leaving town to go 'consult' with the head office.  Next query is probably going to be how to get out from under- while surviving the coming planetary power struggle.

You've almost got to consolidate these threads, man. Or maybe chuck some links into this one to all the others.

With no dropships, you're going to need some outside support.

The other one is the main thread, this was just a vote-getter

Yeah, I am considering the scenarios for getting off-world in 3132.  All I can think of are 3 . . .
