Zee Germans (Canis)
« on: 17 August 2015, 23:36:32 »
Greetings all.
Just getting back into Battletech after a 20+ year break  O0
Managed to  scrounge up a Ral Partha Canis model and give my German WW2 armor scheme a go.
Pretty happy with how she turned out.

Oh, I really enjoy this. Sort of a 'Flames of War' approach to a mech paintjob. Very cool!

Thanks all.
Really enjoyed painting it up.
More to come in this scheme I think.

could i get a cliff's notes version of how this is accomplished? i've tried similar schemes but they don't look nearly as good.

You bet.

- Prime Black (I still use GW "Chaos Black" spray paint)
- Base coat with Tamiya "Dark Yellow" (TS-3)
- Camo applied by airbrush using Tamiya "Olive Green" (XF-58)
- I then overspray the entire model with "Olive Green" (just a light dusting by airbrush)
- Blackline with a KOH-I-NOOR Techincal drafting pen (3x0/.25)
- First edge highlight with vallejo "Middlestone" (70882)
- Second Edge highlight with vallejo "Desert Yellow) (70977)
- Add appropriate decals (I used some left overs from FOW)
- Finally a couple of coats of Testors "Dullcote" spray lacquer.

Hope that helps.

Beautiful job ... I also tend to work in very similar camo patterns --- and I have found that the Villejo Dark Yellow, and especially their Panzer Aces lines can really create some awesome paint schemes.

In addition, I have found that sometimes, with the smaller minis (both the lighter mechs, and the 6mm Micro Armor tanks from GHQ) that an airbrush doesn't "scale down" the pattern well enough for the smaller units. So, I have also taken to using this technique, as it gives me some great results.. I can even manage to get the whitewash camo down, complete with chipped edges, with this.

thanks! i assumed an airbrush was involved. it's the last major item i still have to add to my tool box.

Your welcome.
You can also avoid the time and expense of a Airbrush by using the "Stippling" method Nahuris describes above.
Great video BTW.
You can achieve pretty much the same results with a little patience and extra time.

I've also found that getting a "shading" brush, where the bristles are cut an an angle, barely touching the tips to the paint, and then wiping it off, similar to a drybrush can create some interesting color shadows --- very lightly touching over an area can "fade in" a color --- sort of putting a shadow of one color, over another -- could probably do it with a straight edge, but the angled edge seems to work a touch better.
