Designed by and for many years the sole property of Clan Hells Horses, the Obsidian Wyrm was one of the very few standard Battlemech's that saw use in Front Line Clan forces. Even amongst the Horses it was seen by many as a waste of resources or a dishonourable weapon for a warrior to use.
Designed as an artillery support vehicle the Wyrm took its inspiration from SLDF designs and instead of being a pure artillery weapon could also defend itself against ground and air targets and was equipped with a wide range of defensive measures including an ECM and AMS whilst a TAG system let it designate targets for its own launcher.
Because the Horses were the only Clan to cling to some of the SLDF's combined arms tactics the Wyrm was never seen outside of the Horses Tourman until Operation REVIVAL was under way.
Faced with Inner Sphere forces who made abundent use of artillery and without a reply of their own other Clan's quickly turned to the Horses to trade for the design. The Horses exacted a high price for the design in precious resources from the Inner Sphere, a move which won praise from Clan Diamond Shark. Still production was slow and it was a challenge to find warriors with the aptitude and mentality for artillery support. This was also affected by the limited number of Clan Mech's equipped with a TAG as these were seen on garrison forces and vehicles only and quick refits saw Active Probe equipped lights often swapping out their probe for a TAG
This kept the Obsidian Wyrm from being used in great numbers and it wasn't until Tukkayid that the Mech was seen as the Horses used them, grouped together in Fire Support Star's. This was also mirrored (blatantly copied) by the Wolves and served both Clans well in their battles.
