Anybody knows the movie I'm trying to describe?
« on: 27 September 2023, 20:48:07 »
So back in the first half of the 90's, my father rented me a b-series sci-fi movie with big giant clumsy robots. One looked like a robot scorpion and the other a bit like our Axeman. Both robots had the same designation, 'xcept one was "something, something number 1", the other "something, something number 2". The movie ended with the hero getting the girl then a sequence of the vilain screaming.

Pretty hazy, but that crossed my mind driving home today, wondered if it would ring a bell to anybody?

Robot Jox and Robot Wars are the two films you're thinking of.

Daaaang, robot wars. Even as a young kid I found it incongruous in its scenario. Robot sure don't look like an axeman now, but then, back in those days, every cool robot did I suppose.

Can't believe I didn't come across robot jox 'till now. Would've been my favourite movie as a youngling.

Robot Wars (prequel - second film)
Robot Jox (first film)
Crash and Burn ( third film, barely associated with Robot Jox)

In order of events, not movie.

Early Eighties Mecha fights was very cheesy, but chic back then... Look at how many end of the world futuristic war films and hard sci-fi, but stupid low budget flicks.

Also of note Battletech's movement rate is Kilometers per hour, most Americans think that's fast.

Stop gap motions, Star Wars AT-AT and Robot Jox to name a few, are slow.

Example: 4/6 mech equals 24.5 / 37 MPH...

Still fast, but not that much... Average human jogging is 4-6 MPH, running approximately 6-8 MPH.

When you compare mech speeds to modern tank speeds its plenty fast.

Sure, do I recall rumors that an M1 w/o the Turret on it on a downhill slope during prototype testing once hit like 70-90 MPH IIRC, yes, but I also know we never came close to that speed moving cross country over rough terrain.

Autobahn freeway speeds of 45-50 MPH in an M1 Convoy,  maybe.

Moving cross country at 35 MPH felt like you were totally out of control.

Forget the cool main gun hydraulic-stabilized gun that stays flat while the tank goes /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ over some moguls, as the gunner, try keeping your head/eye up to the scope while going 4x4.

Your getting banged around like your in a monster truck w/o a seat belt.

Even w/ all those cool targeting toys, you still want to be stationary if you can be & at best be moving 15-20 on a flat roadway v/s going 4x4 off road at 35 MPH.

I can only imagine what the bounce bounce would be every time a mech running at full speed feels like hitting the ground, let alone using JJs.

Yeah, IRL we're still in prototype stage for an ExoSuit for "standard" military use.

Maybe such suits, like the Space Marines from Aliens, are the norm...

Body Armor, ballistic weave fabrics, synthetic leathers and armored plastic shin/greaves.

Leather isn't Terrain Cows, but could be reinforced with metallics, chemical or even Megasaur skin?

Another way to get more Exo-Fauna, Exo-Flora and Exo-Funga into your Battletech games, tabletop or RPG.

I can only imagine what the bounce bounce would be every time a mech running at full speed feels like hitting the ground, let alone using JJs.

Very true.  A heavy Mech is basically slamming enough weight to equal an Abrams tank with every step it takes.  Assuming a step is 6 meters in length (to make the math easy), then for just a a speed of 1 (10.8 kph), that means every turn the Mech moves 30 meters or 5 steps, so one step every 2 seconds.

So speed/2 = steps per second.  For example, a Locust running at speed 12 is six 20-ton steps per second.

If anyone has watched a horse race then you know how loud horses are when running.  Now imagine a single platform making the same amount of noise but instead of in a general rumble over the entire time it is six heavy thuds every second.

Which is why it's bone jarring to jump.

I'd assume minor aches, pains and sweat from normal operations, scrapes, minor cuts and bruisings from heavy use to broken and dislocated bones after a battle.

I.mean, come on, a four story walking building falling down is gonna strain your body, even if you're strapped Ina safety cage!
