One of several derivatives of the original Nighthawk Mk. XXI developed during the 28th century, the Mk. XXV was the first suit to meet the Special Armed Services' requirements for stealthy insertion from space. Ironically, this required stripping down the sophisticated armor of the Mk. XXI to its most essential components to make room for a parafoil. Two jump jets were also removed while the third was left to facilitate obstacle clearance and as a backup to the parafoil. Improved ground motive systems somewhat compensated for the loss of the extra jump jets, but more importantly, enabled to the Mk. XXV to reposition more stealthily than a jumping unit. In use, SAS tactics called for deploying Mk. XXV suits in specially treated Personal Reentry Units (PRUs) up to 20 hours out from a planet. The deploying dropship (a "civilian" transport) would then proceed on its way, completing its deceleration and landing. The SAS troops, meanwhile, would execute a ballistic reentry, and use their parafoils for the final leg to the ground.

A further refinement of the Mk. XXV, the Mk. XXVI abandoned the Mk. XXI's ECM Suite for additional operational endurance, speed and maneuverability. This generally limited Mk. XXVI targets to the less sophisticated variety.
