Neptune Infantry Fighting Sub
« on: 25 March 2023, 08:30:23 »
Inspired by nerd's Neptune upgrade I decided to play around with it, too. While browsing Sarna, I stumbled upon the Sub Mech Infantry and wanted to try turning the Neptune into a carrier vessel into a support unit for submersible infantry units. Turns out, switching the engine for an FCE and deleting the laser frees up plenty of space. Enough to carry a platoon of mech infantry or up to 20 suits of BattleArmor, if you happen to have some Sea Foxes or Undine lying around. I messed around with the torpedoes a bit, while I was at it, giving it some more long range tubes and splitting the short range firepower between front and back.

Knowing me, I'll probably mess around with it a bit more later, but I felt like sharing this first try. Comments, critics and the like very welcome, as always.

always thought a turret with both LRT and SRT would be a good idea for subs.

Absolutely, but I didn't alter the structure of the Neptune too much. (He said, carving out a huge transport bay + doors out of the hull) I *think* the only current example we have of a sub with a turret is the Moray. I'll add one to the Neptune at a later time, maybe. Or build something new. Fluff-wise, perhaps a torpedo turret that is mounted under the hull? Torpedos can be fired when surfaced (I think) and this would allow for a coning tower while keeping the tubes submerged.

Lose one of the SRTs, take a half ton off the armor, and you get enough mass for a 2-ton turret that can fit both LRT-15s and the remaining SRT-6.  You'll need to redistribute the armor though.

Lose both SRTs and their ammo, and you get 4 tons which is enough to stick both LRT-15s in a 1.5 ton turret and still have 2.5 tons left over (enough for 40 points on the Turret).

LRT-5s are really all you need, but a few SRT-2s wouldn't hurt if you're worried about them getting close before breach checks sink them...  ^-^
