My "finished" BattleTech boards
« on: 19 July 2011, 22:18:06 »
I say "finished" only because it's in a playable state. I still plan on creating 3 more hexes and 4 half hexes. This is a playable table at this point. This is my first table so this is my "beta test" of skills for several more boards. I plan on learning from my mistakes.

that looks awesome!  Had I the money and were this a product, I'd buy em.

I see the "Hills" & "Small lake" sets are done.  Waitting to see the "Large Lake" and "Woods" sets.  So much more you could do with this.

It looks good.

How long did this take you?  Now that you have a few mastered under your belt, how long does each new one take?

I'm not planning on making forests for this board (partially the reason I started with a desert board ;)) as I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to "attack" making them look good, recognizable as heavy vs. light woods and playable with minis. I'll figure it out--same as I did for my hex-drawing template :)

It's hard to give a good answer about how long each module takes. I'm working on 5 & 2 halves extension RIGHT NOW for this  table to make a Size 2 Board of this scenery.. right now I've got about an hour working ont it, right now I'm waiting on paint to dry. Cutting the foam doesn't take long at all with my Hot Wire Foam Factory Scroll Table (it actually takes longer for me to cut the big 8'x4' sheets in to manageable sizes with my Hot Knife). It's also difficult because I don't ever see me creating one hex at a time. They'll always be in 4-6 batches probably taking about 4-5 "working man hours" for the batch over 3-4 days thanks to paint drying..... so an estimation would be "about an hour per module" if any estimation were to be given.

Edit: The end of this night's work is here: http://gauthic.com/2011/07/21/battletech-size-2-table-work-in-progress-2/

My "rival 'mech commanders" and I will be testing it out tonight. 2 on 2 players... we're not sure of the sizes of the game though...

In-Game pics to come :)

This looks pretty interesting, but I have zero idea how I'd go about making this happen.

Yea, it really is that fast....

I plan on making a tutorial video during the next terrain session (either Grassland or Tundra, not sure which).

I do have a few hints on how I've completed these on my blog (see above link). I've also released a PDF that should allow you to make your own template if you're interested in doing this yourself.

http://gauthic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/BattleTech-Hex-Pattern-Large-Format-Printer-Required.pdf

Now I've not actually tested this with a Large Format Printer (I've not cheap access to one), but it's a scaled PDF and it SHOULD work properly

The dimensions of a hex module are 14" (flat to flat) by 16.2" (point to point).

Here's my article about the math behind it: http://gauthic.com/2011/06/04/the-anatomy-of-a-hexagon-and-a-little-math/
