Naval matchup: My idle curiosity has been triggered.
« on: 07 August 2024, 18:04:11 »
(inspired by the response to something I've been working on...)

The situation: Two WarShips, one Blakist and one from the Crusader Wolves, are engaging in battle. Who do you think generally has the advantage and will take the win in most circumstances?

To emphasize the fog of war situation, the skill level of each side have been omitted (no fair finding the source post and looking it up!), and changing your vote isn't an option, as once the decision to engage or not is made, you're stuck with the outcome.

Word of Blake:
Deliverance (Essex class)
1 squadron of Defiance Prime omnifighters (may deploy with each fighter carrying a single Alamo nuclear missile)

Clan Wolf:
Rogue (Congress class)
2 Points of Chaeronas
2 Points of Tyres
1 Point of Xerxes

DISCLAIMER: This is not a direct response to any comment, nor will the results cause me to go back and change what I've already written. I'm just curious how people on the board might react to a similar situation.

Hate to say it Liam but this is basically a non-starter for me.

It takes a look at actual capabilities of all forces listed, and then, throws it completely out the window & says, Oh yeah, battle decided on a coin toss.

Because either 1 of those hits and crits, which is game over, or, you have, more force for the Clans so in the end they will win, in theory.

W/O the nukes you can analyze & try to see what odds the WoB might have & how much force they can take out before dying, but, the nukes only need 1 crit to win.

At least that is how my limited knowledge of AT rules sees it.

Hellraiser has the right of it... nukes are instant win buttons if they hit.

Edit, just thought of something.

What might make this set up an actual fun fight is a couple changes.

1.  Add the 2 DS that the Congress is  allowed to carry.
2.  Make 1 of them a Fighter Carrier w/ even more fighters.

3.  NOW make the battle sort of like a "Breakthrough".
The entire point then is fighting a force that is quite a bit more powerful, not just 60/40, but 75/25, with your main goal just being "Get the nukes in the air" and then "Pray".

The first set up the Wolf force doesn't really have the total weight to negate the nukes.
Its QUITE likely that some/all of them do get through.
Meanwhile the 2nd set up the WoB is for sure going to DIE, but, they get the chance to take a bigger force with them.

It might seem "less" balanced having even more force but to me its "more" balance since its more about the goal actually being "hard" for the WoB.
In the initial layout I don't really see the Wolves being able to slow down 6 ASF with ALL of them having a nuke.
Maybe if it was just ONE nuke that layout would work, but with 6, no, they are getting launched.

So you're saying I should have added a too close to call option.

Yeah, I guess, it really just comes down to "Cointoss = Insta Win v/s Slog Feast to a Loss"

Yeah, I'd have voted for "too close to call" over the Blakists if that had been an option...

I marked "too close" but actually, in the original scenario, I think your right, it's Blakists.

Because w/ 6 nukes & under 200% enemy fighters, I'm thinking the chances of landing a nuke are pretty good.

The nukes are definitely a coin flip, which is why I'd hesitate to call it one way or the other.

(technically, the poll is supposed to run for a couple more days, but nobody's voted in a while, and I don't know when I'll be allowed to post again, so...)

Looks like the overall results narrowly favor it being too close to call, followed by the wolves.

Personally, I think the wolves would win this scenario most of the time, because despite the mystique of nuclear weapons, in most engagements you wouldn't expect the alamo missiles to actually score that silver bullet kill (the odds are one in six that any hit is a shipkilling penetrating hit).

But then again, maybe it's closer than that? Even if the missile doesn't penetrate and "only" does small naval autocannon damage, it's also slapping a hefty (+2) penalty on all of the target's shooting for the rest of the fight. Maybe that's enough for the Essex to outrun the Congress's durability advantage?

Anyway, thanks to all who participated in the voting. My curiosity has been sated.

I'm curious, did these 2 meet in the Jihad at some point?   Is this match up based on canon?

Nah, it's from a fan story I'm writing.
