Bobcat and Avalance BA
« on: 02 February 2011, 04:41:25 »
The story is first, the the BAs follow

Carson City, Colorado, Federated Suns

The local PD had the bank surrounded, the armed thugs inside were going nowhere. They had already made their big mistake, aside from trying to a rob a bank on Colorado, they had killed someone. The police lieutenant followed procedure and called in the Colorado Wardens Special Weapons Unit.

"Lt. Jefferson, this Major Carson. My unit will be touching down in five. I will meet you at your CP to get a sitrep."

"Roger, Major."

Jeffeson could hear the VTOL making its approach, it was one of the new Commandos that the Cows [Colorado Warden Service] had just put into service. It hovered about 20 meters above the ground when several doors opened and out dropped four huge armored machines. The roar of jet packs signalled the slow descent of the metal-encased Wardens within.

Jefferson had read about these new combat suits, but he had never seen one in person. He rcognized the smaller one as the Bobcat and the larger as the Avalanche. As they touched ground one of the Avalanche suits came toward his location. He assumed that is what the Major he had just spoken to.

The air hissed as the canopy opened up, revealing a bald man with dark skin and a full beard, "Good morning, Lieutenant, what's the skinny?"

"Morning, Major. What we have is four armed men holed up in the bank. They have about a dozen hostages still inside. They have shot shot three people, killing at least two. They want to get out of the city and off the planet or they will kill more hostages. We cannot tell where they are located within the bank, they shutdown the security system as soon as we got here and we can't tap in."

"Too late for talking. They have already played their ace in the hole. The only way they are getting out of there is in restraints or body bags.  As for where they are, I can take care of that right now."

Closing his hatch, he keyed his mike. "Scotty, Terri, I want you to move within sensor from opposites sides of the bank. I want full IR scans, now. Manuel, you and I will cover them."

The four Combat Suits took off at a trot, one pair to the west of the bank, the other to  the north. Once in postion, they sat still for a few moments as they made their sensor sweeps.

"Tell me what you got, guys."

Terri spoke first, "I have got five distinct heat masses, one is very large, most like the hostages huddled together. The four smaller masses are scattered arond the interior, one near the front door, another to the rear of the lobby and two near the hostages. They are moving around. They can see us, maybe they're a little anxious, Remy."

"Wouldn't you be, Terri, if you were them and you saw us coming?" Manuel piped in.

"Cut the chatter, here's how it's going to work. Scotty and Terri, you are going to pop a couple of windows with your MGs. Me and Manuel are going to pop in a couple of flash-bangs and assault the door. Manuel, we are going non-lethal, so that means the shotguns. If that don't ake 'em down, then we go at them with the SMGs. Once we are in, Scotty you stay and cover the front. Terri you break for the back of the bank and cover the employee exit. You guys got it?"

"Alright, a little shock and awe," said Scotty with excitement. The other two piped in with 'Yessir'.

"On my mark. Three..two..fire!" Two quick burst from machine guns, were soon followed by the sound of shattering glass and four successive thumps from grenade launchers. As the grenades exploded with brilliant flashes and cacophonous thunder, the Combat Suits went into action.

The two Avalanches jumped towards the main entrance of the bank, while one of the Bobcats leaped to the roof of and then behind the bank. Remy and Manuel crashed through the front door, shattering the doors and catapulting one of the culprits across the room, where he slid into a wall and lay in a motionless heap. Both of them could hear the screams of the hostages, as they sighted in on the two men nearest them. Each of them fired their shotguns, and two weighted nets deployed and and made their  way to ensnare the two armed thugs.

The two thugs were still in shock from the flash-bangs and had dropped their weapons and attempted to escape the nets, only making it worse.

"Manuel, cover these two, I'm gonna get the one at the back."

As Remy said that, several shots were fired in his direction harmlessly ricocheting off his armor. He moved to interpose himself between the shooter and the hostages, should the shooter and take out hostages before he himself was taken out.

Remy moved to close the distance between him and the shooter. The floor was slick, so he had move carefully. As he reached the counter the shooter popped off the rest of his magazine doing little damage to his Avalanche. As the man fumbled to reload his SMG, Remy debated about going lethal and saving the taxpayers a good deal of money. Instead, he engaged his external speakers, "Drop your weapon. You are under arrest. Should you choose to ignore my order, I will shoot you."

The shooter looked around nervously, looking for way out. Seeing none, he raised his weapon. Before he could level it, Remy's shotgun exploded with muted fury as the rubberized slug erupted from the barrel and made straight for the shooter's crotch. A scream followed by the clattering sound of weapon being dropped was the only thing left to be heard.

Switching to the local PD's freq he spoke, "Lieutenant, the bank is secure. The culprits are down and the hostages are safe. You may send in your men and the paramedics." Switching back to his team's freq, "Once the cops are in, rally at the extraction point. Well done, team."

Fluff sold me on these designs

Nice work

That's debatable, but let's face it; some folks gave them a pass because they were big and claimed to be Scottish.

Very nice fluff, but...

Yeah, there's always one of those.

The Avalanche.  Why does it have a missile pack?  Rather than having a OS missile pack and a grenade launcher, might you consider having a single Standard weapon mount, configurable to up to 150kg?  This would allow the grenade launcher, but would also allow you to mound a flamer rigged as either a fire hose or a gas-cannon, or a David Light Gauss Rifle, for when the SWU sniper unit needs to be called in.

The Bobcat.  This would nominally be an *extremely* munchy thing to say, but let's face it, these are hardly combat designs anyway, so here goes:  Why did you stop at 705kg?  With that add'l 45 kg, you could mount, say, the Heat Sensor that was apparently part of the Mission Equipment in the fluff, and an add'l 25 kilos of mission gear, allowing space for a *second* powerpack, shotgun and laser mics, and etc, for those long stakeouts.

Thoughts?

I designed these before there was an HMBA program. These were pen and paper but I submitted it to one of the playtesters to see if would work. It came out well and had the weapons that were available at the time. This was done a long time ago and I have not updated the designs since (and doubt I would).

Fair enough.

I haven't used any of the HM programs, I've just toyed around with BA a *lot* since picking up the Techmanual, and I enjoy examining other peoples design practices.  I can learn something that way.
