3D Modular System Hills/Forests/Rivers
« on: 01 March 2014, 17:17:12 »
Hi All,

This is my first post on these boards.  I am a long time BT player but never got around to register here... I know, I know Heresy...

Here is a short Video on some modular boards I built.

First of all, welcome to the boards!  It's great to have you here.  The system you have is beautiful.  I'm a big fan of modular since you can more terrain variation with less material.  Are you planning to build more with other terrain themes?

Welcome!

very nice set up!  Colour me envious.  Are the boards that deep to allow for lower levels? Do you have any problems determining hex borders?

Raising the boards was purely an aesthetic choice... sets it off from the table it sits on.

The hexes are not as sharp as a paper map but very apparent.  I have never heard any complaints.  Actually I take that back many non-BT players found the hexes too distracting to play other miniature games on them.  I never find it an issue though 28mm games look strange on them.

Thanks for the comments

Do the trees get in the way of the actual gaming? They seem pretty tight. Looks really good.

The trees are wire armatures that are planted on the 'points' of the hex and do not get in the way of the mech... a slight push moves them enough to set the mech on the hex.

These are awesome. How did you get the hex shapes oriented properly? I want to build my own board but can't think of a good way of getting the hexes aligned without making some sort of template.

I stressed over the hexes for a while then it came to me.  I printed out (at a print shop) a 24"x24" black and white hex pattern.  I glued that to the first layer of the foam board (and coated it with matte medium).  Then I placed the second level hills of foam on top of that.  Then I traced the remaining hexes with a glue gun (yes very time consuming) and then began painting and flocking.

Hope that helps...

That's actually pretty genius. Did you use a hex generator to make the pattern or just do it yourself?

I used this http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/hexagonal/ and set the pdf to 24"X24".
