IJJ'ed Mediums

Before we weren't collectively allowed to have nice things, there was a thread in the Board Game section about the usefulness of Improved Jump Jets. Much of the focus was on heavies and assaults, but doing a bit of number crunching, it looked like jumpy mediums got the most out of IJJs if you downgraded from an XL to a lower-powered standard but still wanted the manuverability. So, I worked up a few designs, taking some 5/8/x or higher mediums and seeing if I could keep payload and jump MP with lower-rated standard engines. A couple of them I kept to standard frames to make them refittable to old SSW-era chassis.

I think the "drop a rating, make the engine more durable, make up the difference with IJJ" thing works better for heavies and assaults, mainly assaults. I'm not denying that what you've done here is beneficial, since you've managed to increase durability with little compromise in mobility, but for mediums I prefer the other main use of IJJ, i.e. keep the speed but make it much more mobile, sacrificing firepower to "move below its weight class."

It's a little like how a mech like the Cougar can "hit above its weight class" since it's slower. The problem with that, and what bugs me about your upgrades, is that it's still  not any better than a medium or heavy of the same speed. It might have comparable firepower, but its armor is much less impressive.

It's a -9C Lynx with the SRMs and a single point of armor removed. Now it's got a C3 Slave and 8 IJJ. Its mobility is no longer comparable to other mediums and some heavies, where its firepower was adequate, but to VERY fast mechs like the Spider and Wraith. Moreover, it still has the armor of a 55-tonner, which is very substantial compared the smaller targets it can now catch. Moreover, its performance cannot be improved upon simply by making it heavier.

This is essentially correct, however I should point out that if you are designing a 'Mech with iJJs you should be looking at efficiency (as always) rather than just dropping the engine rating.  If you want 4/6/6 on a SFE you want essentially the same frame as you would use for 4/6/X on a SFE, while 3/5/5 on an XLE is best at 100 tons with 85 as a close second.

This means mediums should always be moving at least 5/8/7, however you should always be looking to max the jump MP because once you have payed for the first batch of iJJs the last one is really not much more tonnage and it significantly improves your mobility and ability to find a good position while keeping your TMM up.

IJJ's can be lots of unexpected fun depending on what your opponent is expecting from your mechs.  That said, I'm not a big fan of sinking that much weight into an IS asault chassis to get 3/5/5 out of it.  Heavies on down it can be rather handy to have, but the most utility you can get out of IJJ's will come from specialized units that can take serious advantage of it, like an IJJ Clint, Enforcer, Centurion, Grasshopper or some such.

IJJ's can be lots of unexpected fun depending on what your opponent is expecting from your mechs.  That said, I'm not a big fan of sinking that much weight into an IS asault chassis to get 3/5/5 out of it.  Heavies on down it can be rather handy to have, but the most utility you can get out of IJJ's will come from specialized units that can take serious advantage of it, like an IJJ Clint, Enforcer, Centurion, Grasshopper or some such.

Honestly, I have found heavies to be the absolute worst candidates for iJJs.  If you are moving 4/6/6 or slower, you generally want to be up in the assault range, and if you are moving 5/8/8 or faster mediums are more efficient.  You can even get some crazy performance out of high end lights if you want to, although that is getting into the range of virtually unarmed designs.

Forget unarmed, you simply won't have any room left if you combine those with too many of the standard list of mass-savers (light/XL engines, endo, specialty armors, heat sink crit overflow).

Forget unarmed, you simply won't have any room left if you combine those with too many of the standard list of mass-savers (light/XL engines, endo, specialty armors, heat sink crit overflow).

It is true that that is a concern, but you can still make it work if you get clever.  For example, this design can put a lot of pain into someone's rear armor from across the map for very little BV, and while the armor is not great it should be plenty to keep it alive long enough to get into position with the insane TMMs a 12 hex jump gives you.  Furthermore, the TMM it generates might even be enough to keep you alive for another pass in conjunction with armor that is just barely thick enough to control thresholds.

This is a mod I did to the Nightsky.  Makes for a very nasty harasser.

Nice work, that is a perfect use of iJJs to get a previously unobtainable combination of mobility and armor while retaining enough kick to make your presence known, although I would be inclined to trade the snubbie for another trio of MPLs because you want to be in close rather than work at the midranged finesse the snubbie is best at.  You could also theoretically go the other way and drop the hatchet and MPLs for another snubbie and DHS with maybe a C3 Slave, but if you do that it stops being a Nightsky so I would stick with the MPLs.
