IMO, I would just write it off to a understrength VTOL star . . . the pilots for such machines were already generally ASF test downs and MWDA seems to have changed the structure a bit for aero elements. A aero commander could expect to have ASF, conventionals and VTOLs in a aero binary/trinary and IMO gunboat small craft like the Aquilla or Tigress would not be out of reason for a dedicated deep space aero unit both in the time of Stone's koolaid and the re-armament phases.
The Gossamer does make a great ground support VTOL for backstabbing or picking off a critical target (command mech) and it can perform close-in VTOL defense too.
Come to think of it, it has to be a air assault platoon or BA squad's nightmare- getting the crate shot out of the air while still riding as passengers.
