(Answered) Walls and Movement
« on: 27 May 2016, 22:35:06 »
Are walls distinct entities from buildings?

Quote from: Walls, Alpha Strike pg 86
WALLS
Walls have the same types and CF ratings as buildings, and
units must pay the same Move penalties for any wall they cross.

Walls may be attacked and take damage just like buildings.
However, because they cannot be occupied in the same fashion
as buildings, walls cannot provide the protection of a building’s
damage absorption factor unless the target is within 2 inches of
the wall, the line of sight between the attacker and target crosses
the wall, and the wall does not completely block line of sight
.

(1)Specifically, can units move through walls as if they were buildings?  The green text seems to imply that walls are something other than a special type of building.  But the blue text seems to say they are moved through just like buildings are anyway.  (2)If this is not correct and walls must be climbed over instead of moved through, do they use the same rules for climbing buildings on pg 84?

Quote from: 'Mechs on Outside of Buildings, AS pg 84
Along the outside of buildings,
’Mechs can climb up and down the structures’ face in the same
manner as they can ascend or descend the changes in ground
levels, with a maximum level change of 2 inches in height per inch
of forward movement. Jump-capable ’Mechs may alternatively
jump onto a building’s rooftop, as long as they have sufficient
jumping Move to reach that height.

(3)Followon question: would a vertical wall 2" high (or higher) be unclimbable (2" height gain over 0" run) or can a 'Mech climb an indefinitely tall wall over the course of multiple turns so long as the run of forward movement is never 1" or more any given turn?

(4)Final question relating to the red text of the walls rules: If a unit is within 2" of a wall, and that unit's attacker's LOS not only goes thru the wall but the wall obscures enough of the unit to qualify for cover, does that unit gain cover as well as the damage absorption of the wall?

1) A unit may move through a wall, same as with a building.  Unless the wall (or building) is armored (see p26 ASC), in which case no non-infantry unit may move through it while it has armor remaining.
2) They may also be climbed, same as with a building.
3) Yes, by standard rules a unit may not climb a wall or building greater than the elevation change it can normally move through.  You could use the advanced rules climbing mode to do so though, if using that option.
4) No. You are considering (that rule is defining) to be occupying the wall at that point and do not get cover from it.
