Clan and Civil War/Jihad era IFV and LSV variants
« on: 31 May 2021, 15:52:37 »
These vehicles are continuation of the Infantry Fighting Vehicle and Light Support Vehicle families from the earlier Succession Wars and Star Leargue era IFV/LSV thread. For effective maintenance and manufacturing, the vehicles share the same 20 ton chassis in either wheeled or tracked configuration, powered by a 100 rated fusion engine. Equipment comes in standardized kits (which are typically installed at production line, not in the field).

Kerensky's exodus took many IFV and LSV vehicles with it and they remained common sight in early Clan Toumans. Towards the end of Golden Century the introduction of OmniMech riding Elementals and new vehicles like the Badger had effectively pushed the old IFV and LSV families out of the front line Clan units.

However, second line, Solahma and garrison units still needed a cheaper transport for infantry and Elemental Points. For this purpose the IFV family was modernized into the new IFV-C standard that increased the transport capacity to five tons by using the lighter armor and weapons developed during the Golden Century. Some of the LSVs were also modernized to the Clan tech standards. Both vehicles families would be used in varying degrees by the various Clans for centuries to come.

---

IFV-C chassis comes with 2.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor that provides similar protection to the 3 tons of armor on original models. Cargo capacity has been increased to 5 tons but the equipment/weapon kit mass has been decreased to 4.5 tons (which is mostly negated by the new Clan weapons being lighter). All kits can be installed on both the wheeled and tracked chassis which are identical (apart from movement type and speed obviously).

IFV-C weapon kits:

Standard
ER Medium Laser; Small Pulse Laser; 2x SRM2 (+1 ton ammo); Flamer
ER Medium Laser, Flamer and SRM2s in turret. Small Pulse Laser in front.
Lightly armored but well armed troop transport for short range fighting.

Support
ER Medium Laser; ER Small Laser; 2x LRM5 (+1 ton ammo)
All weapons in the turret.
Troop transport than can provide longer range fire support.

Assault
Medium Pulse Laser; Small Pulse Laser; Flamer; 1 ton extra armor
Medium Pulse Laser and Small Pulse Laser in turret. Flamer in front.
Better armored variant for high risk and urban assaults. Extra armor kit provides it with 20/13/9/12 (F/S/R/T) armor protection.

---

LSV-C chassis is similar to the IFV-C but exchanges the troop transport capacity for bigger turret and heavier weapon load of 9 tons. They are typically heavily armed but weakly armored (by Inner Sphere Standards at least). Some of the old LSV kits were never upgraded and rarely used due to the Clans' new way of war. Use (or the lack thereof) of the LSV-C variants generally varied widely by Clan depending on their preferences.

The rabid technological advances in the 3060's and 3070's saw introduction of many new vehicles that took over roles historically fulfilled by the IFV and LSV variants. However, they remained inexpensive and relatively widespread combat vehicles with good spare parts availability and continued to see service in garrison and second line duties. Many variants and the platforms themselves remained virtually unchanged but starting from 3060's some manufacturers started providing upgraded weapon kits that utilized the latest technology.

Introduced in 3060's the Standard II kit was based on the Standard EP variant (as the basic level protection was considered completely inadequate by then). It exchanged the original's Machine Gun for Small Pulse Laser for increased close range firepower, while the ER Medium Laser provided it with longer reach than the original standard Medium Laser.

Half Machine Gun Ammo (100)     Body        0.5

LSV PPC II
Snub-Nose PPC; 2x MG (+0.5 ton ammo); 1 ton extra armor.
SN PPC and one machine gun mounted in turret, second machine gun in front.
First appearing in 3070's, the PPC II kit swapped the original's PPC for the new Snub-Nosed version. The saved ton was used to mount Enhanced Protection armor kit that had become essential on battlefields of the Inner Sphere.

---

In early 3070's a more extensively upgraded IFV-B was first fielded by World of Blake and would be soon copied by other manufacturers around the inner Sphere. It was mostly identical to the standard IFV (including engine, performance and passenger capacity) but the armor layout was redesigned using Ferro-Fibrous armor to achieve (nearly) EP level protection with 0.5 ton less weight. This allows the chassis to carry a 4.5 ton weapons kit.

MML 3                  Turret       1.5
Small Pulse Laser      Turret       1.0
ER Medium Laser        Turret       1.0
MML 3 SRM Ammo (33)     Body        1.0
Infantry                Body        4.0

IFV-B Multirole
ER Medium Laser; MML3 (+1 ton ammo); Small Pulse Laser.
All weapon mounted in the turret.
The most common weapons kit for IFV-B, the Multirole combines the best features of Standard and Support IFV into a single vehicle with (almost) EP level protection. Compared to the Standard II, Multirole's potential short range firepower when carrying SRM ammo is slightly increased by the MML3 launcher. In long range support role with LRM ammo the Multirole loses some damage compared to LRM5 launcher but the added Small Pulse Laser provides it anti-infantry capability that was missing from the Support EP and Support II variants of the IFV.

The Indra is the Standard Infantry carrier.

The Turhan II is also built for the Infantry, going so far as to include enough room for a Binary Point of Jump / BA or a Trinary of Infantry.

The Svantovit was produced as a BA transport, but then you also have the Badger and Bandit as well...

But I do like the LSV-C Indirect.

I figure the Clans created those designs as replacements for their IFV-Cs and LSV-Cs, possibly as an effort to both diversify and show off their wealth. As of Operation Revival, you'd probably only see the IFV-C or LSV-C in either poor Clans who don't trade for or build enough of the successor designs for their needs, or as part of the inventory of a Brian Cache.

Edit: Also it occurs to me that the preponderance of the IFV and LSV would directly contribute to making factory lines that produce 100-rated Fusion Engines far more common among the Inner Sphere. Sure they'd be virtually useless in a BattleMech, with the Hornet being the only canon design actually using it, but it would still be a fairly common rating, especially given how many vehicles your average Mechanized Infantry Regiment would require.

Further Edit: As a bit of a thought exercise, I've been looking on Sarna.net for assorted stuff I can headcanon as the specific brand names of the various components on the IS introtech models. Since the original was an SLDF design, I picked a few items that were already in use by the SLDF.

The Hermes 100 Fusion Engine is used on the SLDF Cobra Transport VTOL and on the Hornet, and is the only 100 rated FE in existence until the introduction of the DAV 100 in 3068, so that's what I figure the IFV and LSV use as their power plant, which would also be the standard choice for all production lines in the Great Houses. Specific brands for the weapons and armor are hallmarks of SLDF-originals, while the Great Houses use natively-produced equivalents (as an example, all but the Direct Fire SLDF IFVs used Inteks for their Medium Lasers , while those produced on New Avalon would either use a Photech 806c or a ChisComp 39).

These vehicles aren't really supposed to directly compete with the canon options. They are a logical continuation for the Star League era designs from the previous thread rather than an attempt to fix some gap in the canon unit selection. They are bit like the IIC designs for Mechs but even more conservative. As an example, for the C-bill cost of a single Indra you could get two IFV-C (which can carry a point of Elementals each). They are hardly front line material but a reasonable option for Solahma units in my opinion.

Same goes for the Inner Sphere variants. By 3060's there's a good selection of IFV type options and the IFVs are purposely left low tier for second line and garrison duty.

Looking forward to seeing how the MML Multirole variant turns out.
The tonnage for that definitely turned out to be very tricky.

With EP level armor, ERML and MML plus ammo the vehicle was left with 0.5 tons of capacity which isn't enough for any standard IS anti-infantry weapon, which I consider essential for the role. Dropping armor to basic level isn't really viable in Civil War era either so I ended up using the relatively inexpensive Ferro-Fibrous armor to make room for a Small Pulse Laser.

The end result is a bit more expensive than the Standard II and Support II but not by too much in my opinion. I imagine the added tactical flexibility and simplified maintenance would make it worth the extra cost for many users ;).

I like it. It doesn't have quite the protection of the Royal models (but then what variants do, apart from the Royals themselves?), but it's still quite nice, and it's easy to see why everyone jumped all over that variant.
