how's this look? i wanted to keep the idea of a quick conversion so i didn't do vehicle bays and stuff, though i did add some MFB's to represent repair areas for the vehicles.

in this one the upper cargo bay would mostly have been converted to crew quarters and the support areas (MASH, MFB's, kitchens, etc) which still leaves about 1000 tons of space in the upper bay and the full 3000 tons of the lower bay, more than twice what would be needed for this unit's combat hardware. (room enough to even carry some SB-27's as cargo for on planet air support.. considered adding fighter bays but decided it would have represented a lot more complex reengineering of the ship.

this version actually ends up fairly roomy, since it has more quarters than are really needed for the battalion alone, and lots of cargo space to spare. but i'd imagine the steerage quarters area would be fairly cramped, probably looking a lot like a capsule hotel or barracks.

Capsule hotels are somewhere between Bay quarters and "camping in the cargo bay".  I've always considered CONEX boxes in the cargo bay (with appropriate water and air facilities) to be the equivalent of Bay quarters.

Sarna only mentions the thrust nacelles rotating for interplanetary transit.  I suspect the undercarriage would have the same problem as every other aerodyne dropship when trying to land or take off vertically.
Well I recall Cannonshop once talking about the design for a basicly single use Dropshop

as for the Mule, I would make the equip the craft with Aerospace Hanger Bays so that they can provide Close Air Support for the landing.

as a random odd thought what about a Aurora style knockoff
