Dido Aero Defense Cruiser: Zillions of angry photons

[Liam's Ghost]

Toyed with the idea of a dedicated fleet defense cruiser and ended up putting 720 barrels on one hull. Added naval C3 to allow multiple ships to coordinate their fire against the same group of enemy fighters, and enough heat sinks to allow the ships to repel a fairly large swarm of missiles while  also keeping up their own fire.

(also gave it some token anti-ship firepower)

Is it the best possible AA defense? Eh. Debatable. There are a lot of different ways to do this, and this type is basically committed to the assumption that a fighter strike will be moving so fast that there's no way to intercept them before they reach their target. They can swat down nukes, they can probably kill a fair number of fighters, but if the attacker has a big enough swarm, then they're really avenging their charges rather than protecting them.

Also it has the disadvantages of using up over 47,000 tons on fire control and requires 332 gunners.

Fluff... I don't know. One thought is that the Didos could have been built by the Republic as part of a program to rebuild their fleet for... reasons.

Well, if nothing else it could always just blast EDM over the radio and be a discoball in space :D

Personally I lean more towards giving the ship big guns for anti-ship work, AMS for point defence and a large hanger bay for anti-fighter duty. Saying that though that would make a mess of even a Thera's fighter complement.
