There couple websites that can allow someone to build a character, aside from spread sheets out there if you want try do build a character for ATOW.
"Men, fetch the Urbanmechs.  We have an interrogation to attend to." - jklantern
"How do you defeat a Dragau? Shoot the damn thing. Lots." - Jellico
"No, it's a "Most Awesome Blues Brothers scene Reenactment EVER" waiting to happen." VotW Destrier - Weirdo
"It's 200 LY to Sian, we got a full load of shells, a half a platoon of Grenadiers, it's exploding outside, and we're wearing flak jackets." VoTW Destrier - Misterpants

I thought there was official team-up due to the Kickstarter that was trying to make a character generator program for ATOW.

I checked out Daryk's AToW stuff and I got to say It's pretty awesome. Some very helpful stuff there.
Corporal: Were under attack general.
General: who's attacking?
Corporal: Those 25 Urbanmech Mechwarriors you offended last week on Solaris.
General: That's....unfortunate. Could you remind me what I said to offend them?
Corporal: You said their Urbanmechs look like Locust-1Vs Sir.
General: ahh... I remember now.

I think the decision of which book to get is best made on the bias of who you are likely to play with.

If your group prefers  D&D or simpler, destiny. Pathfinder up, ATOW. In-between is a judgement call

Really, the rule ought to be "play whatever your group and you like". Like Destiny? Play Destiny. Like ATOW? Play ATOW. Like Traveller, SIEGE Engine, Mekton Z, 5e, Starfinder, Mophidius? Make a Battletech conversion. Like FATAL? Seek professional psychiatric help.

How well does Destiny do with Alpha Strike and TW.

Ironically that's what I named my homebrew A Time of War/Mechwarrior Destiny mash-up.

Krud; I can't answer that question. I'm too old school.

Both are very easy to convert to CBT or AS.
