Baseball, 野球, 야구, and 棒球

Whether it's Major League Baseball in the U.S. and in Canada, Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, the KBO League in South Korea, the CPBL in Taiwan, the ABL Down Under, or anywhere else where professional clubs in this sport vie for local supremacy, baseball has spread to many corners of the planet - as evidenced at the national team level during the World Baseball Classic.

Many of these leagues and tournaments follow similar rules and guidelines to those seen in MLB... but not quite all. In Japan, the Central League is the last professional league to hold out from adopting the Designated Hitter rule; both it and the Pacific League call regular season games as tied after 12 innings; and both use a bespoke type of baseball made by Mizuno - which is not the same type of baseball that Mizuno sells in North America.

Ballparks appear in many shapes and sizes, also. Es Con Field Hokkaido, opened in 2023, has a retractable roof (to keep the snow out in winter, and to let the warm air in during the summer), a natural grass playing field, and its very own onsen! Meanwhile, the SSG Landers, a KBO team owned by Shinsegae Group, is set to move into a new ballpark in Incheon which is going to double as a shopping mall!

Outside of their respective home territories, MLB has perhaps the most in-depth coverage globally. Yet there are YouTube channels, licensed streaming services, and websites in English for some of the others: just recently, the KBO agreed to live stream games internationally via the SOOP streaming service.

So, I was wondering if there was much of an interest in baseball here on these boards - and, if so, to what extent does one's Venn diagram of interest in the game overlap between MLB, NPB, the WBC, or other such events and tournaments to be found out there.

I have not had any interest in baseball since MLB sabotaged the Expos and forced them into becoming the Washington Nationals.

cheers,

Gabe
So, now I'm imagining people boxing up Overlords for loading as cargo.  "Nope, totally not a DropShip.  Everyone knows you can't fit a DropShip in a WarShip!  It's...a ten thousand ton box of marshmallows!  Yeah.  For the Heavy Guards big annual smores party."
--Arkansas Warrior, on the possibility of carrying Dropships as cargo in Warship cargo bays.

TERRAN SUPREMACY DEFENSE FORCE.  For when you want to send the SLDF, but couldn't afford the whole kit and kaboodle.

What happened to the Expos was a shame, indeed.

But, there has been talk of MLB expanding to 32 teams at some point. While it looks like Portland, Oregon might be considered a front-runner for one of these two slots (which would be good news for the Seattle Mariners, at least), there is talk of a group from Montreal putting a bid of their own together for contention. Something about putting a new ballpark on a plot of land near the Lachine Canal?

Plus, while not part of the Montreal bid per se, there is the ongoing replacement of the roof at the Big O(we), which in set to be completed by 2028. Well, we'll see how well that timetable holds up, I guess...

-----

And, while Canada won't be in this year's WBSC Premier12 tournament (their spot in the men's world rankings was bumped by Panama), there is still the 2026 World Baseball Classic to look forward to - as well as seeing whether or not they might qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics, at which men's baseball is set to make a return.

Speaking of the Premier12: some of the games to be held on the island of Taiwan for this year's tournament, the Taipei Dome, took more than a decade to complete; has recently had issues with leaks in the roof; and does not have a home CPBL club (at least, not yet). Hopefully that doesn't sound too familiar...

I love the local team here in Vegas, and have for a long time!
Federated Suns fan forever, Ghost Bear Fan since 1992, and as a Ghost Bear David Bekker star captain (in an Alt TL Loremaster)

Yes

I enjoy it, I have followed the local Little League and American Legion Teams.
I got to follow 1 kid from Little League, to AL, to Bates College, to the Raging Tides (formally part of 1 of those summer leagues like the Cape) in Old Orchard Beach.  I won his jersey.

Red Sox AA Team is here in Portland Maine GO SEADOGS
