Overview:
Designed as a close-in brawler, the Undertaker is an example of taking a
'Mech's concept to its utmost limits. Specialising in energy weapons only, it
provides a sustainable (if fairly one-note) platform for close-range support,
while retaining the ability to strike at long-range when closing with the enemy.

Capabilities:
A 70-ton chassis moving at 60kmph provides a fairly typical Heavy 'Mech
platform, although the Undertaker's 13 tons of armour is more than the typical
amount of protection afforded to a 'Mech of its time and, in combination with
its all-energy-weapons package, results in a design that can maintain its
presence on the battlefield for extended periods of time before being forced to
retreat or succumbing to damage. A single PPC provides its only protection at
long range, however a blistering array of no less than 8 Medium Lasers gives
the Undertaker a level of close-range firepower rivalled by only the heaviest
of Assault 'Mechs. 23 heatsinks provide good heat dissipation; although they
are not quite up to the challenge of maintaining a neutral heat profile when
firing all of the Undertaker's close-range weaponry, they are enough to ensure
that high levels of overheat takes time to attain, and that the 'Mech can
rapidly cool to reasonable levels by cycling out a few of its lasers. Alone, an
Undertaker may tend to struggle against faster or more long-range-oriented
enemies, however used properly in concert with other units that can provide
covering fire as it attacks, it can provide a devastating blow at an opportune
moment.

Overview:
When redesigning the Undertaker to utilise higher-level technology, a number of
options were originally considered. The most obvious route; to add more
firepower by taking advantage of Double Heat Sink technology and simply cutting
down on the number of heatsinks in favour of adding more lasers, was considered
a reasonable upgrade, however simulations of the proposed design showed that
its low groundspeed combined with its lack of long-range weaponry made it an
unattractive proposition on the modern battlefield. The decision to make it
faster, thereby making it able to keep up with its modern lancemates and to
alleviate the range disadvantage, was originally stymied by Black Hawk
Mechworks' unwritten rule precluding the usage of expensive XL engines, which
were originally considered to be mandatory in implementing such an upgrade.
However, the analysis of a captured Gallowglas WD showed that while a 70-ton
chassis was not the most tonnage-to-weapons-load-efficient frame to propel at
80kmph with a standard engine, it was not only possible, but potentially
effective to create a design that did so. By cramming as much armour onto its
frame as possible and retaining a standard engine, the UND-T4R has
unprecedented battlefield durability, and is capable of being employed in a
role of combination brawler/heavy cavalry. It is also effective when employed
against slower Medium 'Mechs, using its combination of firepower and sheer
toughness to pound them into submission.

Capabilities:
A massive, weighty, class 350 engine propels the Undertaker at 80kmph - the
maximum groundspeed for a 'Mech of its size without employing myomer
enhancement technologies such as MASC and TSM. Its weapons package is quite
similar to its forebear, with 8 Medium Lasers providing withering close-range
punch, and an Extended Range PPC allowing it to defend itself at long range, as
well as to take pot-shots while moving towards breaches in the battle line in
its cavalry role. The addition of a single Flamer seems almost like an
afterthought, although it does give the Undertaker a little more tactical
flexibility when engaging in crowded Urban or Wooded areas, as well as making
it a major problem for enemy infantry. It may be no match for extremely
high-tech units like the Timberwolf or more modern Marauder variants in a
stand-up slugfest, however its real strength lies in its affordability and
durability amongst the ranks of heavy cavalry 'Mechs, and its ability to act as
a sort of overgrown, over-armoured Medium Mech, with a nasty surprise in store
for other units that wander too close.

Variants:
The UND-T5R retains the same weight in standard Ferro Fibrous armour in
exchange for using the space freed up to carry Triple Strength Myomer. While
moderately less robust, the sight of a dedicated brawler barrelling down on the
enemy at speeds previously reserved for Light and Medium 'Mechs is capable of
giving enemy units pause for thought.
