The only defensive adjustment i'd like would be about a ton more armor and bolt it onto the turret. That's me, though.

If you take the TC version with RAC2s, you can up the LRM and by my calculation should still have some tons left.
I mean, it already has the AA quirk, might as well focus on it.
So, purely from a BV point of view, would extra armour be worth it?

I rather have a better RAC/5 machine, I run into far more mechs and tanks than Aero fighters.
Sacrificing the TC and maybe one Medium Laser gives you plenty of room for more armor on a new variant.
