SO anyone catch Draft day?  Thinking of renting it tomorrow from redbox.

It may be the only chance you ever get to see the Browns be relevant. I avoided it because I can suspend disbelief enough to enjoy giant robots wrestling extra-dimensional lizard creatures, but the Browns having an actual plan on draft day? No way.

"Tropic Thunder" - finally! (Don't judge me!) Definitely lived up to its hype.

Watching Unforgiven for probably the 20th time. It's one of those movies that gets better and better every time I watch it.

The last three movies I've watched and reviewed....

Dolphin Tale 2 (only because I was bored and needed a night away from the house)
http://www.paulsvalleydailydemocrat.com/opinion/article_6ce45d78-3f6d-11e4-aeb0-27a5d8b40baf.html

I watched the first Dolphin tale, and loved it..  So when #2 hits redbox i will be giving it a look see.

Don't get me wrong, the first movie was pretty enjoyable, this one just felt so much flatter... maybe that's inevitable with something like this.

I finally got a chance to watch the new Godzilla movie last night.  Overall, I liked it pretty well, but I probably have to echo the common comment that Godzilla really needed more screen time.  To my mind, too much time was spent on the Ford Brody plotline.

The movie would have been far better if he had died and it was Bryan Cranston running around trying to save the family.  Just saying.  Actor vs actor they chose wrong.

I can't argue that.  I was really sorry to see him die so early in the movie, and IMO his death really didn't add anything to the story.  I'm sure the choice was just a matter of trying to cater to the younger audience.   ::)

That, and to illustrate that mankind's inflated sense of mastery over the Earth was going to fail.  The largest accomplishment of the military was torching the Muto eggs.

Godzilla needs some bigger feet.  We've taken to calling this movie Stumpzilla or Fatzilla.  Not a terrible movie.  Franchise fodder, oh yeah.  Maybe some better sequels are in the future.

Finally got around to watching I, Frankenstein.... while it wasn't without flaws, I didn't see why it became so bashed.

I just rewatched Iron Man 3, which I haven't seen since it was in theaters, and something really struck me that I don't think I noticed the first time around: the utter lack of AC/DC from the soundtrack.  Given the way that the first two movies and Avengers all pretty much established them as being Tony's apparently favorite band, the contrast was pretty strange.

I think it has to do with Iron Man 3 having a different director than the first two.

Having picked up a slew of secondhand Blurays and DVDs at Dragondaze I've watched a few bits and pieces this week:

- Iron Man 3 (still enjoyed this as much as I did in the cinema - bookends the trilogy nicely)
- The Bourne Legacy (OK but not exceptional - worth the £1 I paid for it, though)
- Snow White and the Huntsman (Extended edition) (I didn't notice much that was different from the theatrical version)
- Wolfen (still as creepy as I remembered)

Up to watch today are Nikita, Super and Darkest Hour.

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo

The previews strongly suggested that it was a quick attempt to cash in on the post-apocalyptic teenagers popularity of The Hunger Games.

Is it just me are there to many movies that have that same idea. Post-apocalyptic, teenager, chosen one that  can save the world??? Hunger Games, Divergent, Enders Game, Maze Runner are some of the movies I have seen that are almost the same idea.

And yet the progenitor of this genre, The Alchemist has not made it to screen just yet.  The themes are all the same, an exagerated form of saying young people shouldn't be discouraged by the older generations.  By the way, you can throw Harry Potter in with this lot, as well.

I thought the general theme was "Old people screwed up the world, now we've got to fix it." :P

I just seems like it's almost a cookie cutter plot writing now.
Sorry from a book........check
Trouble teen.......check
Surviorvs of end of the world......check
Chosen one........check.

I'm sure there is more to the plots then just that.
It just seems that's the easy cash cow for writers.

Started to rewatch all of Babylon 5 so I have decided to start with In the Beginning. It shows its age, but still good for all of that.

I did that last year. Yea, it is aged, but it is still a darn good way to spend a few weeks.

We are also looking past the parts of the story that make it appealing to read.  The story of Icaarus, for example, is an iconic story about having more ambition than wisdom.  It is a fairly rediculous story, in all honesty.  But, the imagery of Icaarus's youthfull recklessness being his undoing is eternal.  Storytellers will use rediculous or fantastic elements of their story in order to conveigh a relateable truth.  It isn't enough simply to tell children to be clever, be kind, stick by your friends, forgive your enemies and stand up to bullies.  It means more if that message is wrapped in a story.  Every civilization engages in it.  Young Adult Literature is, to be fair to the genre, filled with tropes because there is money to be made.  The actual value of the genre is still there.
