Overview
Cosara Weapons' reply to Aleksandr Kerensky's initial request met every design specification laid-out: A unit which could kill or cripple a 'Mech in a single salvo. When testing of the KGC-000 began, it squared off against several Mackies in a mock-urban setting and reduced each of them to scrap in under a minute. Considered a great success, the King Crab was put into mass production and passed on to the SLDF line units.

Unfortunately, the task of brute force annihilation ended up being its only talent. When faced with opponents at ranges beyond that of its 20-class cannons, the 100-ton juggernaut became little more than a metal coffin. MechWarriors quickly began to issue feedback to their commanders, citing short ranges and inadequate ammunition bins as critical flaws. The lumbering design began to acquire a poor reputation amongst its pilots, who considered its usages limited to ambush tactics in tight terrain. As a result, the KGC-000 became the first to be sold-off to member states in large quantities.


Capabilities
While these criticisms fell upon deaf ears for the SLDF MechWarriors, the Hegemony's Royal regiments fared much better. Refit kits were issued in order to upgrade the chassis to its pilots' specifications, greatly enhancing its strength at longer ranges. Member states were quick to pick up on the designs shortcomings, and issued similar kits to their own units in the field.

Of all the makeshift changes made to the King Crab's chassis, the KGC-100 stood out as the most popular. Swapping out its massive, Deathgiver autocannons for a smaller-bored weapon gave the design more range and a greater supply of ammunition. Its missile rack, considered a mere concession to its shortcomings, was exchanged for a second, Exostar large laser.


Variants
The KGC-010, issued primarily to the SLDF's Royal regiments, became the gold standard after 2750. Twin PPCs and LB-X cannons gave this design a massive punch at range, while a flood of short-ranged missiles discouraged attackers from closing. Its successes during the Civil War led to Kerensky personally issuing a general order that the design not be left in the hands of the quibbling Member States. All examples were taken on the Exodus.

The KGC-020 was a direct response to the performance of this incredible machine. Republican defenders found themselves woefully out-gunned in the field and pilots demanded that a similar upgrade be made to the chassis. The result was a hybrid of the original specs and the SLDF's behemoth. The Class-20 ACs remained as a deadly tool for insurgent warfare, acquiring additional ammunition in the process. The Simpson-15 missile rack and large laser were sacrificed for twin PPCs, now cooled by double-strength freezers. This design became a headache for Star League troops attempting to clear urban areas and Castles Brian and was quickly copied by the Great Houses, who had been closely monitoring the war from afar.

Unfortunately, none of the -020 chassis would survive the ravages of the Succession Wars, the last of which being relegated to private collections or scrapped for their valuable components.

Overview
After the First Lord's edict allowing the dissemination of "common" technologies to the Great Houses, an initial boom of previously-restricted equipment began to appear on the open market. Arms manufacturers from across the Hegemony began pawning off out-dated materiel to anyone who would buy. Anyone, including the Territorial States, bought these items and their plans for private replication.

It did not go without notice, however, that the best of this windfall came to the Great Houses. After a vociferous complaint by the Periphery nations on the Council floor, the League began to make concessions to their "second-class" citizens. A stripped down version of the Royal Warhammer was made available, albeit at an inflated cost. The design, while similar in performance to the WHM-6Rb, lacked the ferro-fibrous armor and Artemis IV systems which made the 'Mech so effective. This was a precautionary measure which illustrated apprehension on the part of Star League Quartermasters when dealing with the Periphery nations.


Variants
The earliest modifications to the Warhammer chassis included prototype double heat sinks, which had become available prior to the creation of the Star League. A primitive version of the Royal Warhammer, the WHM-6Rt was a model exclusive to the Terran Hegemony until the end of the Reunification War. Various copies by the Great Houses and Periphery Powers existed throughout the period, most of which mimicked the Hegemony unit's standards quite closely. This design saw use throughout the 27th century in garrisons, despite the BSLI's tight watch on the dissemination of technology. Since the prototype sinks were prone to failure, the units were seen by the Star League as more of a costly burden than a legitimate threat.

Overview

The Age of War was a period of transition for the armies of the Inner Sphere. The BattleMech represented the first major change in tactical warfare in centuries, adding a dynamic to battles which many field commanders found impossible to surmount. This was until the opening barrages of the 3rd Andurien War, when the technologically-inferior CCAF forces defending a forward outpost on El Giza launched a surprise counter-attack on the advancing League troops.

Core to the success of countering 'Mechs were the far cheaper and readily-available Aerospace forces, which could out-range and out-gun most 'Mechs from a high altitude. The FWLM was bloodied in the exchange and withdrew in a near panic to their Dropships. This prompted a fundamental change in combat doctrine before the outside of the war.

The solution lay in the abundant weapon carriers which planetary militias regularly stockpiled. The simple addition of a turret and engine conversion to a fuel cell allowed any tank to be converted to a self-propelled anti-aircraft battery. A force of 100 was available at the end of 2552 and the results would be immediately felt.

Late into the war, when supply lines grew short and assault groups were stranded on-world for long periods of time, the Air Defense batteries ran into problems. Cold-storage hydrogen was in short supply and with no readily-available source for conversion, save the Jump Ships which would regularly ferry supplies. A field conversion of spent deuterium from 'Mech fusion reactors was used as a stop-gap measure. This worked until crews began complaining of vomiting and tremors; the early onset of radiation sickness.

Efforts to contain the radiation were made by welding plates of steel and/or lead lining the storage tanks. Although marginally-successful, an incident near the end of the war stopped production for good. Counter-attack from a Capellan air wing was expected during a desperate withdrawal from Borka. The crews, determined to protect the flank of their routed armies, stayed in their vehicles for the entire night. When radio communique ordered the withdrawal, it found no response. The entirety of the air defense company's tank crews had died at their posts.



Variants
In the late 26th century, the problems with the storage tanks had been resolved and mass production began, along with clones of the design proliferating to all corners of the Inner Sphere and Periphery nations. The only variant to be produced during the Andurien War was the AC5 conversion, which traded four of the Imperator ACs for three, Whirlwind-5 cannons.

Overview

Jonathan Cameron's pursuit of building an invincible Hegemony military came as a double-edged sword. As the HAF gained exponential strength, the Member States received a cornucopia of previously-forbidden technologies which would transform their armies into efficient killing machines. Many of these items were reverse-engineered in secret laboratories throughout the 27th century, and their inclusion in front-line forces required subterfuge. As the 28th century dawned, Pandora's box officially opened.

During this period, the Rim Worlds Republic embarked on a mission to upgrade its entire BattleMech corps. The doctrine of a small, efficient military had existed since the days of Tadeo Amaris. Rather than building new machines in Apollo's factories, the quartermasters' mantra became that of upgrades and refit kits, issued by manufacturers to the Republic's front-line units. Existing forces, composed of cheaply-produced machines from around the Inner Sphere, would be bolstered as advanced materials became available. This formed the core of an army which could match any threat from the Commonwealth, Free Worlds League, or (potentially) the SLDF itself.


Capabilities
Not surprisingly, Diplass MechWorks' BattleMaster was a common target for upgrade in Dragoon and Guard formations. The relatively inexpensive materials required to expanded the unit's capabilities highlighted the General Staff's emphasis on heat efficiency and longevity. By upgrading the heat sinks to Markeson MetalWorks' new fibrous compound, enough weight was freed to accommodate an additional PPC. The unfortunate trade-off was the loss of the rear-mounted Medium Lasers, seen as largely superfluous in the design's new role as fire support.

The resulting machine was as heat-savvy as the Hegemony's Thug, but retained the BattleMaster's signature short-ranged armament. Problems occurred with the ammunition feed mechanism in the left torso, however, and .50 caliber ammunition bin was fitted with a rudimentary CASE system to protect against the infrequent explosions of faulty casings. Although the ammunition problem was fixed shortly after the debut, the CASE was kept as a safeguard for the Republic's most elite pilots.


Deployment
By the mid-2700s, nearly all of the Imperial Divisions' BattleMasters had been upgraded to the -1Gr specifications, as well as half of the Republican Guards. The Amaris Dragoons in particular were reported to have bolstered 25% of their active units with advanced technologies. Fusilier and Legionnaire regiments received hand-me-down machines which were never fully accounted for.

Since most of the upgraded units were indistinguishable from their low-tech counterparts, the RWA managed to completely outfit its 1st Liberation Army by the time of the Coup. Nearly all of the BattleMasters redeployed to the Hegemony's security in 2765 were of the -1Gr type, with the remaining units being sold to the Territorial States in preparation for open rebellion. The price tag for these surplus machines was unusually high, although the MAF and TDF were more than grateful for the steady stream of war materiel.


Notable Pilots

Captain Georghe Sibiu
Attached to the 8th Republican Guards' counterintelligence wing, George Sibiu was an expert in bandit hunting. While the 8th was stationed on Gotterdammerung, a flotilla of armed merchant ships assaulted an HPG station at the system's nadir jump point. The bandit marines boarded the HPG station and ransacked the interior. Captain Sibiu and his BLR-1Gr were detached from the Aegis-class RWS Gregory Amaris to root out the invaders.

Upon reaching the station, the 8th's BattleMaster compliment were outfitted with jump jets and propelled to the outer hull. After prying open the entry hatches and depressurizing the station, the BattleMech regiment made quick work of the bandits, which were armed with ancient designs from the Lyran Commonwealth. After a brief interrogation of the bandit leader, Captain Sibiu discovered the raiders' true origins. With no further use for the "rebel scum," the remaining bandits had their suits removed and were ejected into space.

Overview

Without the rose-colored glasses used to view Inner Sphere history, the Star League, especially in its final days, was an inevitable failure. As early as 2660, the Hegemony's intelligence arm began to sense discontent with its Member States and decided to keep a close watch on this looming threat. Diplomacy prevailed, for the most part, but by 2760, the kindling used to ignite the First Succession War had already been gathered.

By 2758, the FWLM was drawing up plans for an invasion of the Capellan Confederation. Though the Third Andurien War was a thing of the past, it remained a stinging insult to House Marik. The League would make preparations to retake the capital of the Duchy of Andurien, only this time they would never let go. This would involve newer, stronger machines, and Kali Yama Weapons answered the challenge in 2759.

Capabilities
As the main line BattleMech of the Free Worlds League, the Orion's numbers were never in short supply. Its combat record was impressive, but it showed a glaring weakness when deployed on worlds with extreme conditions. Specifically, the Orion lacked the heat sinks and ammunition to remain in a sustained conflict. This was proven during the Reunification War, when deployment far from supply lines often stalled the League's advances against the Magistracy's speedy forces.

As a result, designers at Kali Yama stripped out the bulky autocannon and replaced it with a Kreuss PPC. Though the feedback often created issues with the right arm's medium laser, the weight savings allowed engineers to increase the 'Mech's heat dispersal by 40%. This would insure its survival on all but the hottest of worlds and is considered an acceptable trade-off. An additional SRM-4 rack and ton of ammunition rounded out the upgrades, giving the 'Mech tremendous staying power.


Deployment
As of 2760, an entire regiment of the 5th Free Worlds Militia were outfitted with the Model A, named after the invasion's primary target of Andurien. Over 100 would be produced by Kali Yama prior to the outset of the First Succession War, though none of them would make it through the 30th century. The destruction of Lycomb-Davion IntroTech and the subsequent loss of PPC production lines led to the design being refitted to the ON1-V and ON1-VA configurations.

Variants
The initial problems with the Orion's heat signature were noted as early as the 2580s, when the FWLM was stationed on Marantha. The initial solution to this problem was to decrease the caliber of the autocannon to a Class 5 Imperator, giving the 'Mech's heat sinks "more room to breathe." This was a common refit by garrisons serving throughout the Star League era and became known as the ON1-R.

Overview

Despite its groundbreaking performance on the field, the Hermes was considered a disappointment by SLDF quartermasters. After a period of only two decades, production orders were scrapped in favor of cheaper designs with similar firepower. The 'Mech would be relegated to warehouses and scrap yards, seeing the light of day only to make the occasional patrol by a garrison unit. By 2698, most were sold off to Member States in the accelerated arms production which would ensue.

Though many had given up on the design, Irian BattleMechs did not. After much expense, an up-gunned design was created in prototype and sent directly to the Commander-in-Chief of the Hegemony Armed Forces, bypassing the SLDF's usual channels of acquisition. The new design impressed the HAF commander and several dozen were ordered during the initial run. While their performance was more than adequate, the design met the same fate as its predecessor by the late 27th century.

Capabilities
Dubbed the HER-1H, the new Hermes made use of an expensive, 270-rated extralight engine to enhance its abilities. With the tremendous weight savings, additional armament was mounted, including a medium laser, two Sperry-Browning machine guns, and a small laser. This firepower was enough to match most heavy-class 'Mechs in its day and served as a favorite for the elite Gunslingers which would emerge. Rounding out its enhancements was the inclusion of a Beagle Active Probe, giving the 'Mech a unique edge in its scouting role which was unmatched by anything the SLDF's opponents could field.

Deployment
Although heavily-favored by its pilots, the HER-1H was seen as a boondoggle. The expensive engine provided peak performance, but during a time of peace, such a cost was deemed unnecessary. Especially when its duties could be performed by cheaper, already-existing assets. Several were kept by high-ranking officers and ace 'MechWarriors, but most were either scrapped for their expensive engine or mothballed for future use.
By the time the mid-28th century came, the Hermes would see new life with the invention of myomer acceleration. The -1H would be revisited by the Hegemony Armed Forces once again, this time with full funding and support of the Royal Divisions. Though highly impressive, the HER-1H was handed down to the SLDF, which in turn passed the design to Member States, most of whom were happy to make orders from Irian Unlimited for such an advanced piece of technology.

Overview

The earliest days of BattleMech development saw every nation across the Sphere of mankind racing for the latest military edge. Whether it was achieved through technological savvy, like the Terran Hegemony, or through intrigue and guile, like the Lyrans, Pandora's box had been officially opened and the age of the BattleMech had begun. Languishing behind the major states, Periphery nations cast envious eyes upon their neighbors assets, seeking to gain equal footing by any means possible.

Having seen holovids of the latest Lyran designs being fielded near their Combine border, the Rim Worlds Republic chose the Commando as a suitable target for duplication. The sleek, easy-to-produce design would be a perfect test bed for future achievements. AsRoc agents infiltrated the Commonwealth and reported a major breakthrough in technology had recently been achieved by Coventry Metal Works. The schematics for such a chassis were invaluable to the RWA's war machine.

In freezing weather, and with zero visibility, a mixed company of Gladiators, Wasps and Phoenixes dropped via orbital insertion onto buildings believed to be Coventry's R&D headquarters. Each 'Mech carried a handful of agents within its cramped cockpit, determined to steal what could otherwise not be achieved. The fruits of this operation would become a staple of the Republican military for the next three centuries, and a symbol of the brutal occupation of the humanity's birthplace.

Capabilities
Entirely based upon the Commando COM-1D variant, the Jackrabbit is, internally, a clone in every detail. Externally, however, Rowe Weapons Systems' research division crafted an entirely new visage to avoid accusations of piracy. The new design would maintain a similar weapons profile, but makes a vital trade-off which the Lyrans initially missed. The paper-thin armor of the -1D was bolstered with two tons of PanzerSlab Type B plating. Though this increased the survivability of the unit, firepower needed to be sacrificed in trade. The SRM-6 launcher was downgraded to a Harvester SRM-2 rack. Despite the decrease, pilots often enjoyed the massive store of ammunition, which kept them active long after supply lines had been severed.

Deployment
The Jackrabbit was produced en masse and could be seen in nearly every conflict involving the Rim Worlds Army. During the occupation of the Terran Hegemony, the Jackrabbit became a common sight, symbolizing both triumph and tribulation.

Variants
Ever mindful of civil unrest, the Rim Worlds government made no qualms about utilizing its military assets to keep the peace. A minor variant which emerged in 2490 replaces the SRM-2 rack with a Zippo flamer. Though the flamer had less range and power than the battle-tested missile rack, its intimidation factor, as well as utility in starting fires for cover, earned it a place in every Regiment.

A later variant, the -1T, was an attempt to further increase the longevity of the design by providing greater range when providing fire support. The Sunglow Large Laser was replaced by an Whirlwind Type 2 Autocannon with a single ton of ammunition. Though safe from enemy fire, this variant was unpopular with pilots, as it kept them far from the fighting and created a minimal impact. Once Stefan Amaris had secured Terra, Skobel MechWorks was awarded a license to reproduce the design. This resulted in the most advanced variations of the Jackrabbit, though their light armor and slow speed ultimately made them easy prey for SLDF marksmen.

Overview
During the Reunification War, insurgents quickly learned that standing toe-to-toe with the SLDF wasn't just folly; it was suicidal. Less direct tactics would be needed if the Star League's juggernaut would be defeated by the far less able and equipped forces of the Periphery nations. This led to a guerilla-style campaign being waged, pitting the line units against road-side bombs and heavily-prepared ambushes.

As a result, the ‘Mechs and vehicles procured by the partisans, either through salvage or production, were modified to deliver a knockout blow in a short time-span. While every unit underwent a variety of such modifications, the Thug THG-11E was a common recipient of this treatment. This is due in part to its sturdy, endo steel frame and spacious torso. This allowed technicians the freedom to tinker with new weapon configurations, as technology was developed and raced to the front lines.

As early as 2750, the seeds of discontent were germinating in the Periphery. Both militaries saw the writing on the wall, wisely choosing to prepare for the onslaught which was sure to come. This led to a joint venture between Diplass BattleMechs and Vandenburg Mechanized Industries in 2752, which created a host of kits intended to prepare their machines of war for battle with the finest army mankind had ever seen.

 
Capabilities
Out of the assortment of historical design footnotes from the Reunification War, the many refits to the Thug were the most successful. By replacing the long-range, Tiegart PPCs with Firefly large lasers, sufficient tonnage was freed to enable the gargantuan frame to become jump-capable. By reducing the generous heat capacity of the double-strength heat sinks, additional space was freed to double the amount of missile racks available. Finally, an additional ton of ammunition was added to feed the 24 tubes of short-range missiles. Even with this increase, a sustained rate of fire could only be maintained for two minutes; just long enough to ambush and (hopefully) escape.

Deployment
Though never abundant in numbers, the THG-11EC saw action throughout the Star League Civil War and was heavily used in the Concordat's efforts to repel the Star League Defense Force. No factory officially produced the Thug in this configuration. Instead, kits made by Diplass BattleMechs and VMI allowed technicians to customize the chassis to adapt the hearty machine to all but the worst environments.

Variants
The original Thug modifications from the Reunification War were often cobbled together from whatever weapons were available. The most common configuration included the standard large lasers and a hodgepodge of missile racks or rocket launcher tubes. During the occupation of Terra, more advanced prototypes were fielded. The most notable example was piloted by Jose Magellan, the infamous mercenary, whose hijacking of the Hegemony technology created a truly vicious tool of insurgency.

I feel the Fury Command Tank record sheet is in error. The description in TRO:3050 Upgrade states that Jolassa turned a single ton of "unutilized growth room" into an infantry bay. This means the original, from 2637, had either (1) a storage bay to waste the single ton or (2) an empty bin of ammunition. I went with the latter idea, since the Gauss Rifle is the only armament on this machine.

This also gives the follow-up design (the Fury II) a reason to exist. In its current, canon configuration, it only carries a single ton of Gauss ammunition and has no Battle Computer quirk (i.e.: the famous Nirasaki 400X), with a ton of nonsense armor and a pitiful Medium Laser as backup. The redesign still fits the canon description, but makes it useful as an item to be sold to Member States of the original Star League.

A lot of these are just "common sense" upgrades or changes. The Cestus CTS-X2 is just the canon Cestus, but with Prototype Double Heat sinks. Ostwar OWR-2M is the "missing link" between the Primitive and the Royal OWR-2Mb. etc. etc.

Overview
Although originally considered inferior to its Terran counterparts, the Phoenix BattleMech owned an impressive service record in the War of Reunification. Its agility and range created headaches for the SLDF brass, whose military doctrine centered on decisive battles with a more “cooperative” enemy. Periphery generals focused on asymmetrical warfare, hoping a protracted fight would tire the invaders and force them to quit. Designs like the Phoenix were central to this thinking, causing havoc and retreating before the enemy could effectively respond. While this strategy ultimately failed, the lessons learned were invaluable in the coming centuries.

With the Republic’s industrial might at their disposal, engineers were tasked with rebuilding the Amaris war machine. Instead of trapping themselves in a development boondoggle, design teams were directed to focus on improving the quality of existing machinery. Taking advantage of captured technology, Krauss-Liemann was able to concoct plans for an advanced chassis by the end of the 27th century. After Jonathan Cameron's fateful decision to strengthen the Hegemony's defenses, the Phoenix would become the first design to benefit from the Star League's misguided generosity.

Capabilities
Wealthy MechWarriors have made various field modifications to the chassis, adapting them to harsh terrain and extreme weather. Unfortunately, official upgrades could not be completed at the factory level without drawing the BSLA's unwanted attention. Any enhancements would need to inconspicuous, or else be composed of common materials. Diplass Technologies was tasked with responding to these demands and began work at a hidden assembly yard on Vulture's Nest. Engineers succeeded in developing a repeating launcher, capable of firing at double the normal rate through the existing tubes. This concealed the Phoenix's advanced systems and brought the firepower back to the prototype's four-tube specifications. Adding the bulky repeater caused prototypes to immediately become unbalanced and severely strained the hip actuators.


To compensate for the weight increase, the engine's cooling system was enhanced and the external heat sinks were removed. This improvement spared enough tonnage that Krauss-Liemann technicians could simultaneously maximize armor protection across the entire frame. The final modification, made in 2709, was made possible only through Cynthia Amaris' shrewd dealings in the Star League Council chamber. Endo steel production, jealously guarded by the Hegemony's business magnates, was contracted to be produced in the Stars End zero-G mining facilities by the end of the century. In exchange for exclusive mineral rights on several planetoids, hundreds of tons of the valuable material would be made available to Rim Worlds manufacturers each year. This allowed for CASE-protected ammunition bins to be locally produced, giving Phoenix pilots the assurance they would be alive to fight another day.

Deployment
The nature of warfare during the 27th and 28th centuries required the Houses to exercise extreme caution. Advanced machines were hidden far from the prying eyes of the SLIC, usually on planets considered to have limited strategic importance. As a result, the enhanced Phoenix saw only limited action until the first days of the Civil War. By that time, a sizeable portion of the RWA's BattleMech corps had been upgraded. Approximately 20% of 'Mechs included in operations during APOTHEOSIS were upgraded in some fashion, which included a disproportionate number of Phoenix chassis.

Variants
Several variations of the PX-3R became common during the Hidden Wars, though the vast majority were hastily-assembled from spare parts in Dropship bays. More official refit kits from manufacturers were made on requisition, usually by well-connected officers and elite pilots. The most common of these swapped out the external heat sinks for more advanced models. Due to the scarcity of materials, the hand-assembled freezers were prone to failure and only mounted by pilots who could afford the maintenance costs. Dubbed the PX-3Rr, these machines tended to be scarce for obvious reasons.

A single, advanced prototype came about just after the Amaris Coup. Offering to create a test bed for the Hegemony's pillaged technology, Helmut Krauss put his finest engineers to work on their family-owned PX-5R. The Particle Cannon was upgraded to an extended-range model produced by Stolz and the missile racks traded out for copies of Holly's streak launchers. A skeleton of pure endo steel solved the earlier model's weight problem and proved to optimal for grounding the new particle cannon's feedback. The most impressive addition, however, was a prototype reproduction of the infamous Chameleon system. Assembled by captured scientists, it was intended to serve as a proof-of-concept for an entire regiment of spectral snipers. Dubbed the "Red Angel" and piloted by Helmut's son, Ethan, this 'Mech saw extensive action during the war and the AEAF's defense of Terra.
