Miniature of the Fortnight #44: Panther
« on: 05 June 2018, 22:40:10 »
A light 'Mech trying to be a medium, the Panther has been a mainstay of the Draconis Combine for decades, ever since it debuted in Technical Readout 3025.  (Whether or not this was a good idea is an exercise left for the reader.)  To learn more, read the Panther's 'Mech of the Week article.

The Panther has more sculpts than I expected:
  • First, we start at the original sculpt, originally sold as 20-853 and currently sold by Iron Wind Metals as BT-278.
  • There was a sculpt included with the PlasTech set, which I have not personally seen.
  • The beginners set sculpt was based on the original sculpt (currently available in IWM's Command Lance 'Mech pack, 10-038).
  • The product code 20-853, meanwhile, was reassigned to a jumping sculpt.
  • The previous two intro boxes and the Striker Lance Pack from CGL contain a plastic sculpt based on the beginners set sculpt.
  • A BattleForce-scale sculpt, also based on the original, is available. (20-9132)
Like always, if you have any painted, please post pictures.  We'd love to see them!

Thank you for reading and especially thank you to those who will post.

Our next two fortnights will be: (Dates are sadly still approximations)
  • Clan (6/18): Bane/Kraken
  • Inner Sphere (7/2): Cyclops

I have two Panthers.  First the one from my Illician Lancers battalion, AS lance pack plastic.  Second one is the BT-278 from IWM.  Done in the Pink Panther style to amuse my wife.  :D

Two more Panthers, both original sculpts.
First one is part of the 4. Arkab Legion,
second one is part of the Ryuken Roku.

The beginners set sculpt was based on the original sculpt (currently available in IWM's Command Lance 'Mech pack, 10-038)
The Beginners Set version is a repose of the resculpt (jumping) Panther, not the original sculpt.

I am currently piloting this little 'Mech in a campaign and it has been a blast, even if things are tense as the only light 'Mech on the field! So it seems like a good idea to submit my Panther miniatures. One is in a generic camouflage scheme (the newest introductory box sculpt) and another (an old sculpt) meant to represent one of the Sword of Light regiments. I also have an unpainted PlasTech sculpt with modified legs, but it doesn't seem right to post an unpainted mini. Gotta say, while I like that the old sculpt is a little meatier, the newer one is better scaled.

I have an unpainted pic of the PlasTech panther, which is (like most of that set) a bit sloppy and beefy. Note the massive injection ports on the shoulders; the sides of the legs are often undercast as well.
Fortunately the plastic is stiff, soft, and easily fixed with a little bit of sawing and panel scribing. Cleaning one takes me about 8-10 minutes with a box-cutter and a small dab of Green Stuff or Milliput.

I use the larger sculpt as the -9R/-10Ks in my Panther Company, since I have a goodly number of them. The slighter Beginner Set/IWM sculpts are -8Zs and -12As. I'll dig some out after we finish moving.

I had one of those too, but didn't like the pose. Ended up cutting off the legs and reposing it running instead. Then I used the piece they had for jumping, gluing it to a hex base with cotton inside the dome to represent smoke from the jump, and attached that whole thing to a Kanga (or rather a Kanga modified with a turret from a Von Luckner for a custom tank design I created)...

If you look at it there's some kind of shield/radome in the left shoulder. I suspect he had to pull the left LA and Hand actuators to be able to afford ferro/endo crits and still wedge the HPPC in there; it may also be representing an ECM suite in an odd location.

Some nice looking looking Panthers!!! The little cat has always been a favorite of mine, combining speed and mobility with a decent punch.  It's always fun shooting a bigger mech in the back with that PPC!   ^-^
