Lyran 1st Royal Guards
« on: 09 June 2019, 14:20:22 »

Howdy all.  In my continuing efforts to have one reinforced company painted up from every house, I have finished up my first company for the Lyran Commonwealth/Alliance.  I've wanted to do something similar to the colors the Blue Angels use, so I chose the Lyran 1st Royal Guards.  In typical Lyran fashion, this group is on the heavy side.

Command Lance: Fafnir, Highlander, Banshee, Nightstar
Fire Support Lance: Defiance, Stalker, Zeus, Salamander
Striker Lance: Falconer, Hollander, Battle Hawk, Bushwacker
Armor Support: Alacorn Mark VI Heavy Tank x 4

Comments and critiques are welcome as always.  Thanks for viewing and hope you enjoy!

Great work, Valk! The gold I particularly like - the typical approach looks to me gaudy, mind you the Lyrans might like the "gold plated" look. This gold looks like something for a war machine. Ink over gold, or did the paint come that way?

And yes, it's a very Lyran unit ;)

Now questions:
- How did you do the base on the Banshee, the 'cracked road' effect? Very good.
- How was the Salamander to paint? I have yet to pick one up.

Thanks WT.  The gold was Vallejo Polished Gold, drybrushed over Jo Sonja Artists' Colors Carbon Black.  The black dries dead flat and has a lot of 'tooth' to it (does need thinning first).  Perfect for drybrushing metallic over.  I tried not to cover the black completely.  After that I washed it with Vallejo's black game ink.  One note on dryburshing the gold: do it first.  It creates a lot of little tiny gold glitter in the process.

The cracked road effect was not intended to be that at all.  It's just some basing material I bought.  Six pack of different rock types.  They had a bit more of light gray appearance before I clear coated them.  They are just supposed to be some random rocks.  I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever do want cracked road. :)

The Salamander was just fine to paint, and this was my second one.  Good detail and the cockpit was plenty big enough to work on.  Kind of a boring sculpt though.  Should I ever decide to try reposing someday, it would be at the top of my list.
