Capellan Warrior House Orders?
« on: 17 September 2019, 13:57:44 »
So I've been reading up on the different Capellan Warrior House Orders, and they seem interesting on their own, but I'm curious what the good folks here think of them - in general.

Are they just crazy Capellan sub-factions, are they forces to be reckoned with, or are they just a quirk of the Capellan culture? Is their specific Capellan Warrior House Orders that are better/more worthwhile than others, or are they all just variations on a theme?

Weren't they a nod to Kung Fu Theatre, with the various fighting style schools/academies, and based on the eldish sects that inhabit the East?

Harmony Gold no longer has any say in our decisions, however, the original mechs have been redesigned enough to not cause problems.

First off, I agree with Wierdo. What's with the formatting in your post?  :)

But to actually answer the question, I think they're riffs on warrior organizations more generally through history, the Shaolin and other monks as Ogra_Chief had mentioned, but I think also to more general warrior groupings -- they seem to me to have a "Knights Templar or Teutonic Knights-by-way-of-the-Far-East" vibe to me.

Kinda looking forward to their treatment in combat manual liao.

Yes, I know that's on hold (Borderline cancelled) indefinitely, but I wonder

The impression I've gotten from reading about them in various sources is that the Warrior Houses are indeed very capable, elite troops, but because of their small unit size and the length of time required for training (as aspirants are taken into the House as children) they have a hard time recovering and rebuilding after taking heavy casualties.

My other impression is that they are a bit unusual in that Warrior House members are trained both as infantry and 'Mech pilots, which may be the reason the Death Commandos originally recruited their members from the Warrior Houses.

Also, they were generally only two battalions strong, meaning light-regiments. Possibly leading to structural (strategic) handicaps when deployed against full strength regiments, and having to rely on skill to overcome the disadvantage? Meaning they were always rebuilding... due too losses; given the resources invested in each warrior. Their structure makes sense if deployed in-support of forces, but they always seemed to be deployed singularly. Seems like a waste of long-term resources, as a warriors over soldiers examplar.

A couple of things . . .

They are probably the closest thing to Clan sibkos you will find outside the Dragoons in as someone mentioned, they take in children (how do they find them?) to train as warriors and like the Clans culturally program the children.  In this case, instead of the programming saying the Clan is the greatest, they are taught their House's philosophy and service to the Confederation/Chancellor . . . which one is supreme depends on interpretation of the House philosophy, Lorix Order and how much is the Chancellor the Confederation.  Like the Clans they will have problems replacing their losses unless they take in older candidates- which we saw how that turned out with the Capellan Solution.

The military organization typically has a mech battalion and then one or more conventional battalions.  Strength & composition depends on the House philosophy, the more militant House the more numerous their troops.

New Warrior Houses can be formed, but I am not sure of the timeline they were introduced . . . Warrior House Ijori was reformed in the opening stages of the Dark Ages (see By Temptations & By War) but between the Jihad and the Dark Ages a new Warrior House was founded by the CapCon.

Bear in mind that the Warrior Houses, much like the Death Commandos, are force multipliers more than they are stand-and-deliver line regiments. They're at their best when operating at around company size, or even entirely dismounted.

I don't have the book at hand, but IIRC Field Manual: Capellan Confederation said that aspirants can be recommended for consideration by an adult sponsor (such as a military officer or noble relative) or can even apply on their own in some cases.

Sure, but the two examples I can remember are Aris Sung who got himself nominated for his antics and he nominated . . . eh, guy who did a kamikaze in the last Capellan Solution book.  House Ijori's reformation is a bit different.
