Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Republican Guards, 3030

Courtesy of Sarna,

Quote
The Third Republican Guards Regiment was formed in 3029 from the first and second battalions of Justine's Grenadiers and the second battalion of the 4th Confederation Reserve Cavalry. These former Capellan Confederation units were "orphaned" during the Fourth Succession War and joined the new Tikonov Free Republic. Justine Gordon quickly built a new regiment out of these two heavily-damaged units. In 3030 the Third Republican assaulted Wasat, and forced the 15th Marik Militia to withdraw after capturing their headquarters unit.

These images show elements of the 3rd, supported by detachments from the 4th Republican Tank Regiment, during their deployment on Wasat.

The 3rd's company command lance is led from an Archer ARC-2R, supported by a Trebuchet TBT-5N, Blackjack BJ-1, and Vindicator VND-1R.

The Battle Lance commander's ride is a Crusader CRD-3L, with a Goliath GOL-1H, GRasshopper GHR-5H, with a Rifleman RFL-3N provising AA cover.

While the slightly incendiary Recon Lance contains a Vulcan VL-2T, Cicada CDA-2B, Firestarter FS9-H, and a Flea FLE-15.

The 4th Republican Tank Regiment was, at one point, assigned to the defence of Harcourt Production's factory on Tikonov. Harcourt, previously a minor player, producing antiquated Predator tank destroyers, used the legal opportunities associated with the formation of the Tikonov Free Republic to throw together assembly lines for a number of Quikscell products - unlicenced, of course. Simple visual changes were made in an attempt (ultimately futile) to avoid legal entanglement.

A platoon of "Harcourt T-72s" - functionally equivalent to Vedettes. Poor internal fuel capacity is partially compensated by the use of external tankage.

A platoon of "Harcourt T-55-AM"s - functionally equivalent to Scorpions.

And finally, a platoon of venerable Predators

The 4th contains integrated mechanised infantry; here we have a company made up of laser, flamer, and rifle platoons, with a squad of combat engineers in a modified APC.

So, this combined two interests:
1) Using up my pre-KS stock of older & odd minis, and
2) My new interest in the "blink and you'll miss them" states.

There's a reasonable number of oddities involved: other than the Unseens,
- RTT Rifleman and Archer
- Reseen Goliath 'corrected', turret from a BattleDroids Vedette, with new barrel
- Citytech Trebuchet (not too bad) and Blackjack (totally bad), with it's arms replaced (from a BlackJack Omni)

The armour printed for me by a good friend - the Tikonov connection made the use irresistable.

A big change from the ink work I've been doing lately. Classic drybrushing:

- Black base
- Two-three coats of red drybrush on the quadrants - not trying to be too accurate
- Fix up the lines with black
- Black out any details for later metallics
- Ghostbrush the black sections with light grey to raise edges
- Drybrush metallics.

A nice striking scheme.

Comments & critiques welcomed as always,

W.

STOP IT!

You are making me cry :(

With my new work schedule (God how do people work 8-4 MONDAY-FRIDAY?!?) I find I just dont have the time to paint anymore :(

Look, I'm no CSO level painter. And even if I spent an entire month on a single mini, I'll never be CSO, or Czaril, or Schwerpunk Prinzip level. I did get close - once, decades ago - more or less by accident.

It's about knowing your strengths, having the right tools, and planning ahead.

Leaving aside planning the unit & doing the mods, get all the bits together. All of them! So when you start, you can blitz.

Then do a proof of concept. I want schemes that a) look good for b) low reproducable effort. So dragon scales, cherry blossoms, etc are right out from the word go. I didn't bother doing one for the Tikonovs, because red drybrush on black I know full well, but for example with the St. Ives Lancers I wanted "green-tinted grey". For a basic flat scheme, inks will be much much easier than drybrushing. So I chose a lightish grey-green, and hit it with black ink. Okay, but I got some advice, hit it with a second ink wash, and it came out much more definite. So that was how it was going to be.

Once you know how you're going to do the scheme, assembly line. I try to have all the 'Mechs based, and the vehicles blu-tacked to clothes peg pieces (lets me get around the sides & front better). Then ...
... base'em all
... do first step on'em all
... do second step
... about here I usually realise I need to start the infantry & APCs, so that's a nice alternate ;)
... do more steps
... rinse repeat.

Of course, the glory of acrylics means that you can often get to the end of one phase & start right into the next, or have a short break (or start the infantry you neglected) between.

Do beware - there's usually a stage at the 80% mark where you'll think "This all looks crap!" But once you turn the corner, start adding detailing/metallics, or contrast colours, and suddenly "Hey! This is real!" kicks in.

I basically paint on weekends, basically a couple of hours in morning and/or afternoon sessions (if real life & family doesn't get in the way). It helps my "littlest one" is a hairy adult finishing uni, so it's not like I have the weekend sports runs to interfere ...

It also helps that painting minis is basically my only hobby. Surprisingly, I find painting minis helps my hands recover from proto-RSI from too much typing (like this response! :D )

And of course, with anything, the more you do the more you get efficient at it.

Valkyrie, of course my passion for the Smoke Jaguars is known ;) But some research will be needed. I don't know if "Bud" Baranov's Hall Republic got a new 'do (they were Tikonov to start with). Fronc Reaches calls to me, but I'd need more DA 'Mechs to cover that. I think I'll start a thread in General to solicit proposals!

Have you gotten a Hawkwolf Mini?

If you go Fronc IMO its a definite pick up.  Its a solid chunk of metal, especially with that 'rock' it stands on to help balance.

I do, but it's currently slated for a DA Marik unit. Yes, I plan ahead.

Currently, sitting patiently in boxes, I have the following full battalions awaiting assembly/modding/painting:

Duke Hassid Ricol's Red Hunters (Combine, 4th SW)
Fusiliers of Oriente (League, Dark Age)
Davion Guards (Swordsworn, Dark Age - their 'do is more interesting than the DA Fed scheme ;)

And I have the following in the process of being assembled:

Beta Regiment, Com Star Guards & Militia [the Jolly Roger affair] - 'Mechs only
4th Pesht Regulars - 'Mechs only
Wyld's Jokers - vehicles & infantry only
Gyrfalcon Galaxy - vehicles & BA

And then there's the units waiting for KS minis ...

It helps me buy to a plan. Doing DA era units too helps me use up my stocks of DA vehicles, BA, and infantry, which is tremendously cost-effective. Especially as my finances are potentially hitting a crimp before Christmas.

Last boring hint - invest in brushes. The right brush for the right job saves time & effort. For drybrushing, you want bigger brushes (I can post pics). And I learned from Savage Coyote, CSO painter of yore and excellence, that round-tipped brushes drybrush best!

For drybrushing, I like to raid the cosmetics section of Wal-Mart. (I imagine any such grocery store or dollar store will do.) I get a pair of poofy makeup brushes for $2, and they're good for a surprisingly long time.

As cheap as they are, my advice would be to get a variety of such brushes in terms of bristle length, flexibility, etc, and experiment to see what works best for you.

The cheap artists' brushes at two dollar stores. Get the ones that at least look like sable - they're not, but they last better.

A great and very cheap way of getting a wide selection of brush sizes & types.

Well a) I'm old, b) I'm middle-management, and c) all my kids are grown up.

Not saying I don't work - but I have the agency to control how I work. Like scheduling all my US-time calls from (local time) 2am-8am, and working from home that day.

To paraphrase, the young bull said "Let's run down and paint some minis!" And the old bull replied "Let's walk down, and paint them all!" ;)

Nope. The order I listed is the order I'll probably work in, and it's in the second lot. Any warnings/recommendations?

Actually I lie, it's in the Davion Guards! Even with multi-spreadsheet workbooks, I still get confused  :wheelchair:

No, I liked it when I opened it up- its cleaned off I just need to do a bit of drill & pin for the missiles pod arms.  Came pretty clean, little mold lines, no real fiddly bits, and I really appreciate the arm 'pins' being slightly different sizes so you cannot really put them 'upside down.'  Like I said, its a big chunk of metal- I look forward to using it, for me it will be a stand in for a Longbow (if I ever field one).  I will be placing it on a acrylic . . . maybe wooden . . . hex base, so with that chunk of 'rock' or mud its standing on I do not have to worry about a lip like the IWM base in the picture.  I like having that piece b/c it helps balance what would otherwise be a VERY top heavy mini.

Not sure if IWM sells the missile pod arms separately, but it might not be a bad idea since they would work pretty well for a Hetzer (LRM).

Played with one a bit on MM, fluffed a DA periphery merc unit that uses Hawkwolf & Hounds- basically it plays like a Archer or Longbow of course, either version just has a few primitive parts to keep it from being a real clone.

Wow!  :o

For a while, I stood the mid-watch at one watch station right after the evening watch on another, followed by however much work I could get done at my day job before falling down.  That wasn't my worst rotation, though.  For a short time (thankfully), it was six hours on one watch station, a quick bite, then six hours on a second, a quick bite, reconstructing tracks from the second one for however long that took, then sleep for whatever portion of six hours wasn't taken up by reconstruction before starting the whole cycle over again...  xp

I have three different sizes of brushes that I use depending on the size of the area that I am working on. Also depends on the size of the area that I want to apply paint to. If I have a very light colour that is only applied to the topmost areas I will use my smallest brush to get the most control over how the paint is applied
