Indeed, in most cases, Bolos are more effective without much command involvement.  They are creations of man who are generally of better character than their creators, and have the mental capacity (at least from somewhere past the Mark IV, and certainly by the Mark XX+ series) to make trustworthy strategic and moral decisions.  Where they get something wrong, it's usually from an excess of virtue ("Why did you not retreat?" "I could not dishonor my regiment.")

One theme running through many of the stories is how they are hampered or misused by incompetent or untrustworthy humans.

Bolos may differ in some parts of personality, but one constant is that they are all "le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche" (the knight without fear and beyond reproach).

But they do have command override, so if command needs them to do warcrimes...

But in "Miles To Go", a Bolo ignored that command override. That would have gotten it killed, if the people slaughtering helpless civilians hadn´t beaten the failsafe to the punch, but it still did it.

So Bolos can definitely decide they´d rather die than commit warcrimes.

Then there is the "Road to Damascus" where the Bolo under the control of a corrupt human government gets a wake-up call when he is faced with a young child who is standing in his way to complete his mission.

One theme running through many of the stories is how they are hampered or misused by incompetent or untrustworthy humans.

Hence my initial observation about command authority.  Ain't a Successor Lord been born who wouldn't be drooling on their robes at the thought of being able to drop Bolos on their enemies' capital worlds.  And most of them wouldn't react very well to being told, "you are not my Commander, kindly get bent."

Clan Space
Undetermined Year

A trueborn sibko is rather suddenly reduced by one when one of it's members is suddenly yanked out and thrown  away into a freeborn sibko in a different enclave.  They are told nothing-and the boy himself, aged 17, told little more.  He knows only that, while on an errand, he tried to stop a crime-an assault on a laborer woman.  And for this, now, he has been ripped away from everything he knows.  Thrown into a sibko far more like a prison, where a youth with a broken leg ill-healed is expected to keep up with his peers.  A sibko where the very week he arrives, one of them tries to kill herself.  A place without hope, and a place where, in two weeks, he and two others who overhead the wrong words will be utterly cast out of at the mere word of the Solahma bastard who is in charge of them.

But there is one other thing in this place.  A strange eye-shaped program on his personal Noteputer.  Something called...MetaNav.  And something within himself.  Per.  So.  Na.  A power to topple bloodhouses and Khans.  A power of rage and collective action.  A power...that will change his life.

Sounds like Smoke jaguar or Jade Falcon type situation, and even then i would go more to the Jags
Ok, maybe one of the Kindraas or clan temper tantrum, but Jags are my first thought here

I mean, it could be absolutely any clan.  P5 is not a game about how Japan is a horrible country because of it's horrible leadership, it is a game about a normal country with horrible leadership who murder and molest and abuse those under them.  Who cares if a bloodnamed warrior turned solahma is sexually and physically abusing his charges in a freeborn sibko, they're not really gonna be proper warriors anyways so he can break that kid's leg and make sure it never heals properly for disrespecting him.  He's a warrior, they're not, he's never gonna face consequences.  Even if you actually graduate, are you going to have the moral courage to turn around and trial-of-grievance this dude for 'making a warrior of you?'  And that's just the beginning.  So, if I had my choice?  Wolves, Coyotes, or Bears.  Let one of the 'hero' clans have their horrible villains in positions of power, because that's more in the vein of what P5 is.  After all, if a Jade Falcon sal-khan was running around, abusing women of lower castes, nobody would bat an eye.  Abandoning your freeborn son and pushing his mother into killing herself is just what you do.  For Shido to be a villain, this has to be behavior that would be at least worthy of going "Well, you shouldn't do that to a sex-worker."

Problem being, the Clans really don't have those kind of limits-a Warrior Caste rapist will be punished-for dipping down, not for sexually abusing a laborer, but because his target is a laborer, the stigma is akin to lustful feelings for animals, reinforced by the Breeding Program's specific restrictions and structure.

A lot of people really don't grasp what a 'might makes right' society actually looks like, because they're not familiar with the ugly side of history and societies that operated that way in both east and west (and rewarded that kind of operation) the taboos are completely out of phase with what you grew up with in modern, western-influenced society, and Nicky K did that INTENTIONALLY.  The natural outcome of the Clan system, is a system in which a bigger, stronger warrior can 'take' what he wants provided a bigger warrior or better warrior doesn't oppose it, and if there's any punishment for other forms of abuse, it's because it's destroying a resource, not because it's cruel or traumatizing.

the basic element of EVERY Clanner out there, is that they are property of the Clan.  This includes Warriors and Warrior Candidates.  An unhealed or crooked leg on a cadet? that cadet stops being a cadet and gets sent to either starve as useless or off to a lower caste-they're not going to keep damaged goods in a position using Training Resources unless that damaged goods is ****** phenomenal, or they literally don't have enough candidates to fill all the slots the Touman needs.

Basically, by the standards of post-enlightenment western society, the Clans ARE evil-just some of them are slightly less visibly evil due to being more pragmatic about looking long term.

On the flipside, most Clan warriors don't go around murdering their inferiors or casually breaking children's legs for snapping back to them.  There is a standard of behavior, the vaunted clan honor, and most things don't actually come down to warriors fighting trials and getting their way.  If the Merchant caste present a pair of economic plans, one of which increases capital goods production by 10% and one which increases commercial goods by 20%, the decision of which to go for is unlikely to come down to a trial, nor are Clan Warriors likely to trial any judgement of them that they don't like.  Maybe that's because they know they can't take 4 on 1 odds, maybe it's because they know that like a wolf or a jaguar, they are actually incredibly vulnerable to a single failed attempt.

It began with an incident, but the real beginnings are so far in the past nobody remembers.  Maybe that's for the best.

It began with an incident, but that's not where it ended.

Khan Ulric Kerensky studied the report in front of him, then looked up to meet Elias Crichell's eyes.  "Looks like you were right after all." he said, "We're going to need the rest of the Grand Council, we can decide what sort of ending after we've defeated this."

"Ending?"

"Whether it's your Crusade, or ours." Ulric said quietly,  "How long does Pershaw think they can hold, if we stop attacking?"

"We do not know.  What we do know, is that these new invaders are coming through the Capellan Confederation, Free Worlds League, and Federated Suns.  We also have some evidence they are not...not human."  The Jade Falcon Khan admitted.  "It kind of changes the tenor of a lot of things, quiaff?"

"This is why you are dropping the accusation?"

"This is why you are going to...negotiate an exception to the Tukayyid treaty, Ulric, because this is not merely restoring the Star League, it is warding it from an external enemy."  Crichell didn't have his usual smirk of superiority.  "We must act or there will be nobody left to save, or conquer."

Meanwhile, hundreds of lightyears rimward, worlds fought  a series of desperate stands, as an alien, non-human empire advanced into the inner sphere on a carpet of fire and blood.

After a battle with the Capellan Confederation Alaric suffers an injury, it is not serious but does require cloning a replacement limb from his gifttake.  The scientist/technician notices something odd in the gifttake.

There is no questioning it is Alaric's.

It seems even among Clan Wolf the Society had one last laugh.  The Sources are Victor Steiner Davion and Sarah McEvedy.  Katrina's DNA was never used after all and Katrina was deceived.

What will this revelation mean for the new Star League and the ilKhan in particular?

The Warriors mocked the little chapel, and members of the Solahma went in, and dragged the Priest and his staff out into daylight, they'd refused to show up for reassignment to a Caste, and that's resistance, and after the resistance they'd suppressed elsewhere, well, they knew what to do.

Well, they thought so, anyway.

They didn't know what was being kept contained in the basement.

The first signs of something going wrong, were work parties going missing in the hours of darkness.  First, it was one or two, but then, it was whole residential quarters, followed by blocks.

People missing.  The initial assumption was runaways, who could be found later.  A few desultory searches by Clan Police revealed no solid leads, but occasionally, there were hints of violence.

Some kind of animal, maybe?

Then, at a remote posting, the warriors came up missing.

All of them.

WEapons still on the racks, beds unmade or half made or left fully and tightly made, cups of Tea or Clan Coffee left to mold on counters and desks.  a Few toilets left un-flushed.

and blood.

so much blood, and not all of it was human.

but...

no bodies.

The village nearby, it's empty.  vehicles parked wherever they were, a few farm trucks stopped in the middle of the road, door open., farmer gone.

For [insert character name here], Star Captain, Clan Watch, it's the worst thing possible-a mystery with no easy answer.

Where did they go? what took them? what if...

What unholy thing, kept quiescent for centuries, has been awakened with a terrible hunger?

When the Outbound Light jumped over Huntress, the crew sent a message on wide beam, hoping the message would be received by the descendants of Kerensky. It would be a cry for help. Cautious of this transmission, the Smoke Jaguar ships in system approached the jumpship and requested the nature of their distress. To their great surprise, they say that the Inner Sphere is being invaded, by a non-human enemy that has already destroyed ComStar and conquered Terra. After bringing the ship to Strana Mechty, the last representative of ComStar relays what has happened to the Inner Sphere.

A race of extraterrestrials known as the Yuuzhan Vong began the invasion within the Taurian Concordat and Magistracy of Canopus. ComStar had tried diplomatic approach, but these creatures seemed to relish war, pain, and destruction of all things artificial. The Successor States tried fighting back, but the Vong proved to be far more dangerous despite the fact that their technology is almost totally biological. After viewing the evidence presented to them, the Clans knew right then and there that the decision to return to the Inner Sphere had been decided for them. Afterall, being born through artificial means made them a viable target for the Vong and therefore this would not be a war for honor or glory...but for the very survival of the human race.

Well Pulse Lasers will work well against them lol. And ground combat will be interesting. But I’m afraid like every other BT Fan Fiction… the Naval capabilities of BT are severely lacking and a YV Fleet will just annihilate everything. I doubt even the SLDF could probably match them (although that would be at least theoretically capable of fighting them)

But I like the idea!

No one is sure just what happened in the IS. But when the clans showed up that year they found everyone cleaning things up from the last few wars. The clans get their clocks cleaned and cannot understand what happened.

#964:

Alaric curious as to what went down in Japan sends a small force, just big enough to defend itself long enough until help arrives but hopefully not too big to be perceived as being overly threatening.

The people of Japan warn him that the recent conflict have awoken something ancient and terrible.

They then point out it was not the Falcons that were responsible for the majority of the destruction around them.

But despite that they say in no uncertain terms that they will not bend the knee to Alaric.

Outraged Alaric sends a response.

The cries of his warriors soon fill the channels, screaming about some huge monster.

Wanting to see for himself he goes to Japan.  He sees it.  The flash that wipes out an entire Cluster of some of his best Warriors but also claims several buildings.

Gojira has returned to 'protect' Japan.

Fleeing while he still can to formulate a response reports start coming from around the world.  Kaiju are waking up and causing great devastation.
