Possible retcon: Aquilla Jumpship?
« on: 10 September 2023, 02:57:18 »
She's currently an illegal design...

AC/5 didn't debut until after she was created, making her illegal per IO design date.

Now as for a possible retcon, the Heavy Rifle was around, same weight, one less crit but only 9 salvo shots per ton... So we need to drop two tons from cargo to get the necessary 10 shot minimum needed, 18 total per gun.

And further note, the AC/5 could be the upgraded navalized variant of the MoC that's talked about.

Not a possible retcon, Rifle Cannons do not work in space:

Is that a direct official quote?

" Rifles lack the power to function effectively at normal space-to-space ranges "

Because it is very badly worded : lacks power to function effectively...

Still means it functions... however effectively...

I can see reduced damage, and a higher to hit modifiers in space.

Hell even an Auto-Rifle effects an Aero if it hits... And that's an Infantry weapon.

Anything .50+ deals 1 damage, basic TW rules.

So...

It is an absolute no go in space hexes.
So in a sense a To-Hit modifier of ha-ha lol nope.

So, you are saying a Rifle Cannon ammo round can not be fired in space?

How?

Powder could be electrically or even chemically fired.

Not wanting a flame war, but... How?

I don't get it.

If every other cannon can fire, why not Rifled? Machine Guns can...

They are way the hell smaller...

Yet they fire perfectly... Age of War.

The most obvious answer is projectile velocity, machine guns and autocannons could have a far better velocity than Rifle Cannons.
Those massive space hexes require projectiles to have extreme velocities to have a realistic chance to hit anything.

Eh...

Like I stated earlier, very badly worded.

But ok.

most likely the 'original' design didn't mount weapons at all.
note that it also lacks dropshuttle bays, which would have been a standard feature for the role it was supposed to have played in interstellar travel and commerce. the stats we have should probably be viewed as a later 'militarized' version which sacrificed dropshuttle capacity for armament, more small craft, and additional cargo space. most likely the version used by the breakaway states in the Outer Reaches Rebellion of 2236, which employed a number of armed Aquila's in naval auxilary roles.

The Aquilla has already been retconned, in essence, by Interstellar Operations, which uses it as an example of how to build a Primitive JumpShip.  The revamped design has only machine guns for defenses, and reduces cargo in favor of adding an 11000-ton DropShuttle bay capable of holding two shuttles.  It just needs a new record sheet published in an appropriate product.

I think the current justification- or possibly fan theory- is that there is no single 'Aquilla-class'. There are many.

The Aquilla began production in 2148. It seems to have continued to be produced until sometime around 2577. And the most likely reason for its discontinuation was the invention of the Dropship collar, rendering it obsolete.

With a 430-ish year long production line, the most likely scenario is that there were successive generations, or refits, with new technology being added as it was invented.

While I agree, still a Heavy Rifle fits the early bill.

It's that the wording is horrendously bad.

Quote
Rifles lack the power to function effectively at normal space-to-space ranges

I understand it's a Kilometers wide Space Hex, but assigning a heavy to-hit attack number to it might allow advanced playage. Say +4 to-hit or so for the attempt, meaning a 8+ on average for a short range shot, plus the standard modifiers for movement...

All I'm saying is, it should be able to fire in space, barring any special instances. After all, it is a solid projectile that can possibly do some type of damage, in Space.

His point is that it's so slow that it can't hit a maneuvering target at all.

Too bad there can't be other additional unspoken type weapons.  Such as a "Primitive" Types of Rail Guns which aren't gauss riles, but they don't have hitting power once it gets out certain ranges or accuracy issues.  It would solve some of the problems.

Yeah...

Should be something, but if the Aquilla as published could be the Navalized variant.

Or it could not...

Silence from the TPTB (CGL) peanut gallery just drives anybody crazy.

And then years later, a retcon...
