Design Challenge: Replace the Atreus Class Battleship.
« on: 12 October 2023, 10:04:01 »
A bit of a belayed sequel to a previous design challenge I did about the FedSuns replacing the Defender Class.

While a questionable procurement decision by AFFS Naval Command to procure both the Champion and Cavalry class to replace their 6 Defender Class and two of their Aegis class Cruisers (with four of each), something undeniable was that it had become the single largest Naval expenditure by a member state since the Reunification War and touched off something the Star League had been trying to prevent since its founding, a Naval Arms Race.

Second off the Block and following on Davion's heels was ironically not any of its immediate neighbors but actually Marik. The Commissioning of the massive new Battlecruisers caused many Navies to evaluate their existing ships, it was the FWLN that noticed that the core of their fleet, the Atreus class Battleships, had fallen behind dramatically. Once they were ships that exceeded the Battleships of the Hegemony on an individual basis, now compared to the McKenna and Texas, they were unimpressive and a peer to the Tharkad class of the Lyrans. The Captain-General didn't like this.

As such, a new naval budget was rammed though Parliament authorizing a blatant violation of the Edict of 2650 by bringing the FWLN's reserve fleet back into operation and authorizing new hulls. One of which being a new Battleship class designed to replace some or all of the Atreuses in the Federal Navy.

The Procurement requirements were put forward was simple, be better than the Atreus in every way, pose a credible threat to the capital ships of the other powers, and mass no more than 1,600,000 tones. The League is thinking that with every other state also making blatant treaty violations, as long as they don't create a design that pokes the bear too much, they shouldn't have much to worry about an SLDF response, especially with current rumors coming out of the Draconis Combine and Taurian Concordat.

Additionally, as a compromise with the Army and at the behest of the Captain-General, this ship is required to have a large drop capacity. The thought being that these would take a leading role in offensive campaigns or be used as part of "Peacekeeping" operations conducted domestically against renegade factions within the League's borders.

Well Captain-General sir, we here at the Associated Conglomerate of Military Engineering have the ship for you!

The Oriente-class Battleship is superior in all categories to your ageing Atreus-class except for speed where it simply matches it. More armour, more guns, more drop collars. We even managed to put it together in a hull under the mass budget your Procurement request required.

Concieved as a direct successor to the Atreus, the Great Eagle begins life with the same weapons, but makes several modernizing shifts.  The use of N-gauss weapons to replace fore NAC-25s is one such change, and the deletion of anti-fighter lasers in exchange for anti-capital and anti-dropship weapons also features impressively-indeed, each aft quarter has eight large capital lasers.  The ships point defense girds were a subject of heated debate but the PRO-PD camp won out in spectacular style, not just preserving the PD grid but adding to it's effectiveness by using true AMS systems instead of small lasers.

In transportation, it sweeps away all other comers, using it's massive carriage capacity.  24 fighters, 144 battlemechs, and over 1300 jump infantry ready to combat drop into a hot zone make for a reinforced regiment of combat troops.  Eight dropship collars provide extra carrying capacity, cargo volume, or a built-in anti-fighter escort.  Three assault dropships and one carrier are permanently assigned as escorts for doctrinal purposes.
