Overview:
In an attempt to mimic Clan technology, GM engineers raced to try to mirror both the Timber Wolf and the Summoner. Prototypes of the former proved unimpressive but the modified TDR-5E chassis of the latter showed promise and all available resources were thrown into the newly dubbed Thor.
Capabilities:
Measured against its Clan counterpart, the Thor disappoints but primarily because of the less capable weapon systems.
While it has a slightly shorter jump range, the Thor has the same ground speed and improved armor over the Summoner. Advanced heatsinks cannot quite keep up with its armament's demands and the mechwarrior's ability to manage this between salvos are somewhat limited.
However, three long range weapons, good armor and excellent mobility for its size mean that the Thor has had good reviews from mechwarriors replacing older and less capable designs.
Deployment:
The first production line of Thors has gone to units battered in the fighting around Arcturus. It's believed that half of all production for subsequent runs will be held back to provide a 'lostech cadre' for rebuilding units such as the 17th Skye Rangers. There have been pre-emptive complaints from frontline commanders who understandably want all the advanced equipment they can be sent, but so far the AFFC High Command remains intransigent on holding some back for later use.
Variants:
The TH-1R designates Thors who have swapped their ER PPC out for a standard PPC which solves essentially all heat management issues, at the expense of some long and short-range issues. This is not recommended and there is no factory production, but instructions for carrying out the modification are included in standard maintenance documents.
Notable Mechwarriors:
Christian Kell, most known for piloting a Thunderbolt, used an early Thor in the defense of Arc Royal. Although the Thor was ultimately crippled and abandoned, Kell was still impressed with the design’s capability as it allowed him to complete on almost level terms with a Jade Falcon Summoner for most of the battle.
