Hi Everyone,

We are thrilled to announce the special Beta launch of Story Arcs - A feature we've envisioned and talked about for years!

In the beginning MekHQ was primarily for managing TableTop campaigns and creating missions in MegaMek. Then back in 2014, when MekHQ was five years old we implemented the "Against the Bot" (AtB) spreadsheet into MekHQ. This, followed by Stratcon, has led to countless Merc units being born, destroyed and born again. But early on, there was a clear demand for a branching narrative tool in MekHQ, which would enable users to craft Starterbooks-style campaigns or their own Mech-based adventures they could play and share.

This concept languished as an idea for years, sporadically receiving attention but lacking solid development. Then, in 2021, Taharqa, the creator of MekHQ, took significant steps by starting to code this feature, leading to the creation of the "Young Wolves" campaign, which delves into the Refusal War of 3057.

This beta aims to test its functionalities and gather user feedback.

IMPORTANT!!!
This is NOT a development release and is NOT eligible for MILESTONE status.

So what does this mean?
Simple it has code from the still in development 0.49.19-DEV which is NOT the 0.49.19 release (notice the missing -DEV). Which means this is bleeding edge code very similar to our nightly releases. It does have a lot of bug fixes and improvements over the 0.49.18 release, including fixes for the aerospace issues in MegaMekLab. But this release should ONLY be used for playing and testing Story Arcs.

The link at the bottom can be used to download the Beta. Unix and Mac users should use the non-Windows release. From the first splash screen, select "Load Story Arc" and choose the "Young Wolves" story arc.

Please play through the story arc and identify issues, bugs, grammatical errors, etc. Feel free to play through multiple times and make different choices. We recommend making multiple saves throughout so you can go back and make different choices to explore all the possible outcomes.

I want to learn more about Story Arcs
You can review the README notes HERE

I've been playing with Young Wolves and have found an issue?
If you find a specific bug or error, please report this as an issue to the STORY ARC ISSUES TRACKER HERE. Please note that you are not providing issues for the main MekHQ repository on GitHub. Please ensure that your issue is not addressed by existing issues. Please include the version number of the Story Arcs beta in your release. Detailed information including how to reproduce the bug will help us in resolving it. Please only report bugs related to the story arc. All other bugs need to go to our normal tracker HERE

You mentioned Feedback?
If you have overall feedback on the story arc itself that goes beyond a simple bug such as a comment on the narrative, difficulty of the scenarios, etc. we would also appreciate your feedback. You can either provide that feedback on this pinned forum topic of the MegaMek subforum on the CGL Battletech forums, or on the Story Arcs channel of the official MegaMek Discord.

How can I help?
Looking ahead, we'll want players to write and share the Story Arcs they create. We understand that initially hand crafting these will be a challenge, but we intend to support this over time with an editor. If you have any questions about helping, please join official MegaMek Discord. and ask in the Story Arcs channel.

Story Arcs requires Java 11 or 17 only
We've updated to Java 11. To use the **0.49.x development branches**, an update is needed. As Java is now open source, we recommend Adoptium Temurin 11. Help pages for Windows and Mac users are available. Linux users should use their package manager to install Adoptium Temurin.

This release also supports Java 17, which has undergone some testing. More player usage is needed, but Java 11 remains our recommended version.

We have released an updated .3 version for testing. Link updated above, and you'll need to start the arc over saves aren't transferrable.

I´m enjoying the Young Wolves story arc so far (I´m at the Denizli mission right now). Great work!

Glad to hear it. There are a few issues we have discovered. Next version should be out shortly.

Has Zell been implemented for Princess yet, or should we ignore it WRT focus firing, etc?

Is there some intentional sub-text to the double negative, or just a typo?

(Had stopped MekHQing for a while. It's Sarna's news about Story Arcs that sent me back here...)

No Zell for Princess yet.  But if you want to do so just to show Princess how much more honorable you are, go for it!

But more importantly Sarna Story?

General thoughts after a single playthrough (going to do a second one): awesome job! I understand there might be limit to this system, like I guess you can't have branching choices involving multiple systems to go to, but still it brings fresh air. This story itself was very well written.
I'm not a fan of choice-click plots because I usually feel choices make little difference and also do not involve your character ability. The later is unavoidable in BT, and I'll see about the former on my second playthrough, but already I feel it does make a difference.
The fact that opfor is (usually?) BV-matched may disappoint some, but at least you don't end up in hopeless or trivial battles.

SPECIFIC ISSUES

In "Into the Storm", the Scenario Objectives have a slight typo: "map" and "edge" are separated by a carriage return instead of a space.
Also it says "Details: crippled units do not count...". What does it exactly mean? I suppose it means enemies are considered as NOT having reached the map edge, but it could bear being stated more clearly.
Also it's not clear whether objectives such as this one is meant to count % as in BV% or unit %. In a story arc scenarion, it would be best if it was clearly stated.

In Denizli individual trial, it was impossible to affect forces. It has assigned my whole forces to each of the first 8, and part of it for the 9th. No sign of the 10th trial for now, but I guess that must be normal. This was fixed by saving/reloading.

ALso each of the trials lists the opfor as a Binary, which seems like an error?

Also it says "Keep in mind that you may only claim isorla in trials that you win, even if you succeed in capturing the facility." But it's not clear how many trials you  must win to capture the facility. Also because they're fought one at a time, you don't know if you've won a majority until you've completed a few, so you might need to GM-delete some spoils afterwards?

Lastly the ice map in that scenario is quite detrimental to the bot as it gleefully walks on ice like a 60-ton Buster Keaton and then often breaks through and this ain't no Wonderful Life for Princess then.

When returning to Twycross, there's a typo in "Remberance" in Kernesky's speech.

In Trial of Refusal, there's a crucial error in the result in the rare case where both mechs are destroyed but only the player pilot survives (this happened to me because of the enemy suffering from a glorious catastrophic explosion that took out my mech as well!). It then says that Chistu walks his mech up to your carcass and kills you. But he was dead and he had no Mech...

SECOND PLAYTHROUGH
- Not a big fan of those click-choices which do not actually make a difference. I do not mind NOT having actual choices (I understand it's very hard to build multiple paths), but I'd rather it be made clear that when you have a decision, it's always meaningful and frame the rest as "click next".

- The only real issues seem to come from Megamek and Princess's limitations with fancy scenarios (e.g. duel trials, protecting buildings, and of course zellbringen). But this story arc makes good use of the available MM and Princess tricks to provide varied scenarios.

- Replaying was fine, except for the ambush scenario which is really just a waste of time the second time. Maybe I'm just not a good enough player to win it, but it seems unwinable, and it would seem more interesting for it to be very hard, rather than impossible.

- In the last trial, there's a bit of an issue which I think is not intended because the opponent has JJ and uses them to stand on the border ledge which seems to be meant as a wall to me.

Overall, that was a big success, really fun, and those bugs I had were either minor or existing minor MekHQ issues. Thanks!
