Letter of the Law questions
« on: 04 November 2024, 12:15:27 »
So, no spoilers but I have questions about the newest novel Letter of the Law

As a Combine fan since 87 I'll admit that I don't know a lot about the Free Worlds League but...Why is Trenton Marik getting upset that league forces are fighting League forces on a League world? Isn't that like 700 years of League history? I mean all Sucessor states have had civil wars but they seem common in the FWL

The FWL has had three civil wars in 900 years, which is only one more than the FS or LC despite being significantly older.

That the League civil conflicts were anything but devastating to the people affected by them is a meme. They don't want to fight each other, but the political situations played out that way.

Additionally, this FWL is *not* the FWL of old. The military and power structures are different, with some eye to the ideal that the nation will be more stable. Trenton is 100% bought in on this idea. Of course he's going to get upset at the thought of having to fight his own countrymen or at the possibility of a whole state seceding from the League. On top of that, there's the chance that the conflict will spillover into a larger conflict with the Wolves, something exacerbating his obvious PTSD from the Wolf invasion of Stewart.

What can I read to figure out this "new" League?

What can I read to figure out this "new" League?

Field Manual 3145. It describes how the League unified itself again and how it is structured. Though for the Regulus part you would also need Shattered Fortress. The new League is slightly different. This time it is a more representative system. Each member planet has one and only one voice. The Captain General also delegates some of hgis or her power to the so called Warden General who is the head of the League parliament. And the League also has new members: the Augustine alliance which is mostly made up of former Republic senators and planets. and the Clan Protectorate a mix of Spirit Cats, Sea Foxes and former Republic Nova Cats. This faction also holds the important planet of Marik and they are not very keen on the League going to war with the Wolf Empire (in fact only this part voted against it)

Though I think the main theme is most likely that the League has just been reborn with the premise that there won't be any animosities among it's members and well guess what happened just a few years after its rebirth. Also, while there haven't been many open civil wars the League is way more fragile then other Successor states. Which comes from it's main structure where the federal state is rather weak and it's members have a lot of power. Heck during the formation of the original Star League FWL troops who joinmed the SLDf were described as "willing but weak"

Trenton is also friends with Stewart and Witherspoon's unit is the only formed one remaining from the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth.  The rest of the survivors were mashed together to form units.

Witherspoon was also on Stewart with Anson when he died.

In addition to FM 3145 I'd strongly recommend the novel Hunting Season. The Empire Alone sourcebook is another good read for getting up to speed on the reborn FWL.
