Thought Exercise - Capellan Confederation TO&E
« on: 06 November 2024, 22:07:11 »
Ok, here we all go.  I have pancreatic cancer so I have chemo and a lot of time sitting around, and need to keep my mind busy and since I have played Battletech since 1st Edition (mostly House Davion). I also love strange TO&Es so I started to plan for a new project building a new battalion from the evil House Liao - Capellan Confederation.  I want it to be very Capellany (I know that is not even a word but so what).  The working era will be IlClan.  And below is the basic combat unit Table of Organization and Equipment but I need some help from the group filling in units because I am not very familiar with Capellan units are in one piece.  So have a go. Thanks for you input and have some fun.

Capellan Confederation Augmented Battalion

   4 Battlemechs
1st Augmented Company
   1st Augmented Lance
      4 Battlemechs

2nd Augmented Company
   1st Augmented Lance

      2 Squads of Battle Armor
   2nd Augmented Lance
      4 Battlemechs

3rd Augmented Company

So the way I've read up on Augmented Battalions is that your not mixing 3+ units in it.
Its the Base/Original unit that gets Augmented w/ 1 added unit type.

The basic 36 Mech Battalion of 3 Companies gets converted into 4 Companies totaling the 36 mechs but also an added 16 Tanks.

You either have a Mech Battalion that adds a few tanks.
OR
A Tank Battalion that adds a few mechs
OR
A Tank Battalion that adds some BattleArmor

Finally you have the Warrior houses that combine Mechs/BA & BA/Mechs for their Heavy/Light battalions that replaced the Mech & Infantry battalions respectively.
IIRC these go from 36 Mechs + Infantry Battalion & get converted to 24 Mechs + 48 BA  &  12 Mechs + 96 BA.

What you have above is basically a battalion with an example of almost every type of "Augmented Company" in it.

Quote
Command Lance      (4 Battlemechs)
1st Augmented Company   (8 Mechs + 4 Tanks)    (Regular Mech Battalion)
2nd Augmented Company   (8 Mechs + 4 BA Squads)   (Warrior House "Heavy" Battalion)
3rd Augmented Company   (8 Vehicles + 4 Mechs)    (Regular Tank Battalion "Heavy")
4th Augmented Company   (8 Vehicles + 8 BA Squads)   (Tank Battalion "Mechanized Infantry")

The 5th Augmented Company that I mentioned above is used by the Warrior House "Light" Battalions   (4 Mechs + 16 BA Squads)

Hellraiser has the right of it - the Augmented Regiment has a battalion of 'Mechs with combat vehicles and two battalions of 'Mechs with battle armor. Both is not really aeen in the same battalion.

Do you have a preferred formation weight & combat role? Should this be a cavalry battalion? A battle line? Skirmishers?

Where is that from?

Last I read it was just that an "Augmented-Regiment" contained "1 to 3 Augmented-Battalions"

But nothing about it being all 3 & that its a 1/2 split?

"At least one battalion in each Capellan BattleMech regiment has been restructured into four two-lance companies with an independent command lance. Each lance consists of four ’Mechs and two conventional combat vehicles. This new structure maintains the same BattleMech strength as a standard ’Mech battalion, but the attachment of integral armor assets significantly increases the firepower of a battalion which may find itself operating independently of the whole regiment, and encourages officers not to think of the armor as expendable auxiliaries. Remaining battalions are encouraged to form ad hoc augmented lances with attached battle armor formations, the ubiquity of the magnetic clamp-mounting Fa Shih suit in CCAF forces making this a relatively easy task." - Field Manual: 3085, p19-20

Gracias, I wasn't recalling the entire quote.

The "At least" is what I was recalling.

So it seems like 2 Battalions of Aug w/ BA isn't actually a standard.

The way it reads, it's Ad-Hoc,  Just recommended for any battalion that isn't the 1-3 w/ tanks,  and not the full 4 Company set up.
More like 3 Lances / Company like normal but w/ some added Fa Shih BA if they have some lying around on the TO&E.

Ah, yes, the infantry augmented battalions aren't a formal formation, you are correct.

building a new battalion from the evil House Liao - Capellan Confederation.

I was meaning to ask, is this just a TO&E (RPG) project or is this a building/painting project?

If it is for minis, what are you looking at for your minis count?

My own "Augmented" unit is just the BatCom Lance & 1st Augmented Company for a total of 12 Mechs & 4 Tanks of the Big MAC.

I know this is not a standard/canon Augmented Battalion setup.  It is more to set up various units to play with at different times and in more likelihood for random pickup battles of rolling a set of dice to determine the base unit and then fill in the rest of the BV with other units.   My paint scheme is to be the 4th Capellan Chargers.

Goals
No more than 2 of any type of mechs in the total battalion (this gives me a wide range to play with).
Vehicles need to be paired together.
Battle Armor just try to keep it all the same in a lance.

I play mostly medium and heavy - scooting and shooting.  But will listen to about anything.  Thanks for any help.

6th Federated Suns Armored Cavalry Regiment (Hillbillies with Guns) - 262 units - 66% assembled - 11% painted
Yeti Galaxy - 230 units - 13% assembled - 0% painted
333rd Comguard Level III - 56% assembled - 0% painted

Okay, so this is painting minis for "playable units".

Based on each formation/Company,  I'd try grouping them by size/mission as seen below

Command Lance      (4 Battlemechs)    (Heavy/Medium - Non Omni - Command/Fire)
1st Augmented Company   (8 Mechs + 4 Tanks)    (Heavy/Assault - FireSupport)
2nd Augmented Company   (8 Mechs + 4 BA Squads)   (Mediums + Omnis - Striker/Cavalry/CloseRange)
3rd Augmented Company   (8 Vehicles + 4 Mechs)    (Lights/Mediums - Non Omni - Recon/Striker)
4th Augmented Company   (8 Vehicles + 8 BA Squads)   (Lights/Mediums - APCs/Omnis  +  Fa-Shih + IS Standard)

Now, talking about specific Cappie flavor units from factories.

Command
 - Cyclops, Catapult, Vindicator, BlackJack

1st
 - Pillager, Highlander, Striker, Cataphract,
 - Marauder, Warhammer, Thunderbolt, Rifleman,
 - LRM Carrier, Demolisher, Brutus,

2nd
 - Victor, Jinggau, Helios, Huron Warrior,
 - MenShen, BlackJack-O, Gun, Firestarter-O
 - IS Standard

3rd
 - Raven, Snake, Sha Yu, Locust, Wasp, Stinger, PhoenixHawk
 - Po, MorningStar, Minion, Regulator

4th
 - Pegasus, Maxim, SwiftWind, Regulator
 - Fa-Shih,  IS Standard

These are just some generic ideas of how I'd group them into units & some choices of specific units.

No idea what all your looking at for minis but this should give you a start.
