a 10 thunderbolt aka warthog the tank buster
« on: 08 August 2011, 19:13:14 »
I cannot seem to find anything even remotely.resembling the a 10 in any tro I have. The weapons platform is uniqe and I would love to see it in action say against mid size Mecha in rough terrain....say a nice quick head shot or disabling damadge in fast low run by such tank buster could be really nasty....
you sure cannot out run death...but sure as hell you can make that bastard work for it!

The old conventional fighter the "Mechbuster" is the btech equivalent of that machine.

A real A10 would be packing the equivalent of a heavy machinegun under Btech rules.

TRO 3039, the Mechbuster conventional fighter. Decent speed, AC/20, healthy bombload...all it's missing is the looks and the durability. (Then again, A-10s are tough against AA weapons, but what about a 120mm cannon?)

If you want something uglier and with more armor, take a Transit. Same gun, more gun, more speed, much more armor. And space-capable.

I'm more inclined to equate the A-10 to a Gauss Rifle Transgressor or AC/20 Transgressor myself.  Basically does the same stuff with more armor.

The Hammerhead shares similar traits too. One big gun in the nose, powerful engines, and a fully respectable bombload.
Subtlety is for those who lack a bigger gun.

I would think that the closest main gun would be a RAC

'Mechbuster. It's a perfect fit.

I disagree. Both regular BT machine guns (which appear in 20 to 30mm formats) and regular autocannons (like the Hatchetman's AC/10) exhibit multiple barrels.

Really, in appearance only. Sure, it's got a rotary barrel and all, but the bursts from that gun are extremely short, and to kill tanks as often as it does, the shot grouping is probably as tight as a standard AC, as opposed to scattered all over the target like a RAC. The Warthog's known for putting a short, extremely damaging burst into a target with enough punch to completely punch through modern armor. To get that kind of performance on a CBT battlefield, an AC/20 is really the only way to go for me.

...AC/20 Transgressor...
...Hammerhead...

These could work pretty well...

I would say the Hydaspes Aerofighter. Lots of Armor, Lots of Firepower, and not the fastest. But thats a Aerospace fighter.

I seem to remember the Mechbuster entry even citing the Warthog as inspiration in TRO 3039.  But I could be imagining it.

This would be good. While the A-10 is famouse for the 30mm gun, it also carries a LOT of ordanance on it's wings. sm

So does the Mechbuster. A fully load 'Buster can easily cripple or destroy a 'mech in a single pass, or carpet-bomb a surprisingly large area.

Ah yes, a bit of fluff that (IMO) should have been quietly stuffed under the rug a long long time ago. It was the Mechbuster and my fondness for the A-10 as a kid (I had the GI-Joe version of it called the Rattler) that made me note the description in TR3026 of the AC/20 there firing 4 shells of "HVDUP". Yet the way it worked in BT vs the description never quite added up. But we already had this conversation. ; )

I agree though, the Mechbuster is the closest thing to an A-10 I know of in BT.

Forget the Mechbuster's AC, there are plenty of other multi-barrel and burst-firing ACs.

Er, well, sortof. MBT's are vulnerable to the HEI and API 4:1 mix from sides, rear and high angles but not typically from the front. Penetration is less than 70mm of RHAeq @ 500m. While some erosive ablation can occur with sustained fire it is not a reliable kill vector for frontal armor on a current MBT. Sides, rear and top however are quite vulnerable as are lighter armored vehicles such as APC's/IFV's ect from all aspects.

Then again, combat has shown that Abrams is vulnerable from the rear quarters from an RPG, so...

Not at the time there weren't. (This was when TRO3025 and TRO3026 were the only ones available)

Others have been mentioned since, but that was the point of my curiosity in the first place, why did the description persist in the face of the introduction of Ultra AC's (and later RAC's). It's the Chewbacca defense all over again. : P

An A-10 in B-tech would be roughly 15 tons, conventional fighter, 2/3 thrust (this is being generous), armor at best would be a quarter of a ton, and armed with a MG (or if your being generous an AC-2).

A B-tech analog would be closer to the Mechbuster.
Even B-tech conventional fighters are armored far more than their real world counter parts, A Meteor HSF can take a 100kg burst of high velocity projectiles to the front and wings with out the armor being penetrated, or even a 63kg hypersonic slug (lt. Gauss) to every part of their airframe and not be destroyed.

Mechbuster is pretty likely to have been inspired by the A-10, but it is a bit too fragile to be a real 31st century+ equivilent.

Transit, Lightning and Xerxes are more equivilent; enough firepower to flatten a Mech and enough armor to bring the bird home.

Technically, it's listed as having a half ton of armor (540 kg, according to Wikipedia).  It would, like most modern vehicles, have lots of points at a low BAR.
