Title: A SLDF attempt.
Post by: marauder648 on 02 December 2021, 07:47:58
First I appologise for the terrible picture quality, i'm just using my mobile and lighting's not great at the moment. I know they just use a drab olive cammo but it was verrry drab so I added some green-grey to the body pannels.

I used the paints in the Vallejo WW2 Paint Set for Soviet Armour and Infantry, its got the greens in it, and did a skarsknikt green as a final light drybrush.

Love the depth you got in the panel lines there Marauder648, good selection of greens and greys to break up the drab.

Thank you :) it was all done with drybrushing and using makeup brushes, the panneling was done with a smaller brush but I did all the highlighting/drybrushing first :)

Looking good! The Classics are a joy to paint, aren't they?

A light box would help, but that is some excellent paint work!  I look forward to their finished bases...

Painted using the Vellajo WW2 Paint set - Soviet Armour and Infantry, which gives nice greens needed for the SLDF olive green field camo.

That is a very good paintjob, I would rate it as an example set.

I'm thinking I need to add more of a lighter highlight to it or to lighten up the green-grey to make it pop a bit more.

Hi, this is indeed great looking work! I wasn't planning on creating any SLDF regiments but your work is really tempting me. Would you tell me which color from the Vallejo set you used as base coat?

Wow, just wow.  I'm a sucker for basic army scheme/camo.  (as long as you don't do the lime-pastel green that many army owned civilian vehicles had on post ... although, fugly is cool sometimes).

Hey i'm glad I could serve as inspiration :) The paint set I used for these is the Vellejo WW2 Paint Set - Soviet armour and infantry. Sprayed them black and then used the Olive Green camo to base, I did with brushes, not an airbrush.

The finished article, I put some stonewall grey over the grey-green as it just wasn't showing up right.

I've also done a small Lance of Tyrell's Crushers

Nice work, but I have to say, your camera has an incredibly shallow depth of focus.

Tis just a mobile camera, a somewhat old one :)

And as I doubled up on the ComStar boxes, i'm gonna do 12 of those as SLDF units too :)

I'm thinking I need to add more of a lighter highlight to it or to lighten up the green-grey to make it pop a bit more.

As crazy as it sounds, green is often highlighted best with yellow. That's more for edge highlighting but you can do that dry brushing. I'm not sure you would look very drab. Before you try that all over one of your mechs try a test model (an extra base or something would work) or just the back of a leg you could cover up.

your grey-green could use light grey as an edge.

All depends on you bright and "poppy" you want things.

I'm not saying I'm good at that sort of thing. I've done it.  It's turned out sometimes. Other times not. I have a fair bit of knowledge but my execution lags.

Banged out 8 'Mechs today :)

Using the ComGuard boxes I have been doing them in SLDF colours rather than the white and i'm quite happy with the result. They're not varnished yet.

I undercoated with citadel black and then based them with Camo Olive Green from Velajo, then highlighted that by drybrushing with Russian Uniform Green and then Skarsnikt Green for the lightest highlight. The grey is Game Colour's Stonewall Grey.

The metallics I used AK's gunmetal and then washed over that with Citadel's Basillicanum grey, and used the soulstone paints on top of a silver for the cockpits.

I also liked your missile tips on the Longbow, look great.  Also good PPC lensing on the Thug.  I'm going to have to give that a try, I think you really nailed it.

I've added some flock to the un-snowed ones but the guys on the right are varnished and afaik you can't go over varnish once its applied so I can't lighten them up like the others.

I may be reading this wrong, but you can paint after putting on your Matte Varnish/Sealer.  Unless you used gloss as your final step--paint won't stick to that very well, you are right.  But if you want to lighten up something after you've used a Matte Sealer it will stick just fine--I fixed a few cockpits this week that I had sealed ages ago.

Nah I just used Munitiorium varnish for it, so if I can go over them, then huzzah!
