Alpha Galaxy Nova Cats
« on: 15 August 2021, 19:03:44 »
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine dropped off her Clan Invasion boxed set miniatures and asked if I could paint them as her favorite faction, Clan Nova Cat. Here's the result below.

They aren't 100% canon (I put stars on the arms), but it was a fun painting exercise, particularly experimenting with different star patterns and practicing my edge highlighting. I used white, yellow and lilac to make the stars different colors, because I wanted to make sure they looked like celestial bodies and not snowflakes. I would have been embarrassed if people mistook them for Ghost Bears. (Quick aside: Just how many Clans use blue and black color schemes for their frontline galaxies? Too many-that's why it's so tricky telling them apart, lol! :D)

Anyway, here they are, and I hope Nova Cat fans like them.

Very nice work.  Did you paint all the stars?

Definitely gorgeous work, and definitely my first thought was "gorgeous Ghost Bears"... Unfortunately, Nova Cats are currently in my "other Clan" category.

Worktroll, it is very, VERY challenging to make Nova Cat Alpha Galaxy distinctive from Ghost Bear Alpha Galaxy, lol!

That's why I went with multi-colored stars and bright blue edge highlighting. I wanted them to look like they were hanging out at a techno rave as opposed to trudging stoically through a snow field. In fact, to keep myself in a Nova Cat mindset*, I was playing Oakenfeld's "Ready Steady Go" while painting them. ;D

Also, one of the reasons I didn't paint the arms black was I was worried they'd be mistaken for Diamond Shark's Deathstrike Galaxy. Or possibly any one of several Coyote Galaxies.

My word, Clan frontline forces do love their dark blue and black. I'm glad my two favorite Clan units to paint currently are Smoke Jaguar Alpha (light gray with jaguar spots) and Steel Viper Rho (black and yellow-tan).

*I always picture Nova Cats in my mind as techno ravers. At least, Alpha Galaxy and Xi Galaxy warriors. :P

The Stars are crazy good, and they stop my eye from identifying those as CGB mechs.  The only other thing I can think of to further clarify the forces is put a huge CNC decal or CNC Alpha Galaxy Decal on the bigger flat surfaces to further help your opponent realize who they are fighting.

*IF* decals are your thing.  If not, I think those are gorgeous examples of CNC Alpha Galaxy as is.  Great work!

Thanks again! If there's one downside to the new Kickstarter minis (and I hesitate to even use the word "downside"), it's that there are so many panel lines, details and small bits on the surface that it makes it difficult to find a suitable place for large decals.

It's important for me to add that I LOVE these sculpting details, they look fabulous. But you're right, I'm often finding when I apply decals that I usually have to use the very smallest sizes on my sheets to ensure they fit properly.

But the new minis are soooo good that I can live with tiny decals if I have to, definitely. :D

I hear you ... to the extent that the Coyote unit in my Grand Plan will be Nu Galaxy, if only because they're not blue and black ;)
