Groundwave Class Wheeled AutoMech (Exile in Syberia)
« on: 17 August 2020, 18:07:01 »
I just picked up an incomplete plastic Thunderbolt off eBay with the intent of turning it into Groundwave from my story Exile in Syberia, since I didn't need half the stuff on the mini, anyway.

No mods to the mini itself yet, since I've not yet decided how to handle the antennas exactly, or the wheels.  I may buy a couple Swift Winds to chop up.  We'll have to see.

For camo scheme, I went with a Terran Hegemony one based on the Camospecs Mackie and the THAF Prototype camo in MegaMek.  Numbering is a homage to the original image in TR3025, with some tweaks.  For paints, I used the basic Reaper Minis set, and then used a matte clear acrylic fixer, which is...well, mostly dry.

Second two images.  Since Groundwave has 3 jump jets, I repurposed one of those panels, painting it black, and added two similar ones, one in each side torso, though obviously they're just painted.  Wrangler had suggested an Ostscout jump pack, which I'll probably do, along with the Swift Wind for the antenna where the LRM mount was.

Swiftwinds are seriously tiny, and not going to be much use.

If you can find some MW:DA singles with wheels, the Shandra might be a good source (or PM me).

For whip antennas, toothbrush bristles. If you want dish antennas, DA Fox armoured car.

You could use the Wheels from the Striker Light Tank when i made picture of GroundWave.   Backpack from Unseen Ostscout

They ship with their comm dishes detached, though, right? And one of the antennas is folded? That could still work for a small satellite dish.

I hadn't even considered that for whip antennas. That's a good idea.  My DA minis are lost somewhere in storage.

Oooh, and you can buy just the radar sprue!

I have no Unseen Ostscouts, and if I did would be leery of cutting them up, separate from the difficulty cutting any metal mini, which I'm leery of.

The Phoenix version of the Ostscout has a separate jump pack that Iron Wind Metals sells, which I used on a custom Unseen Shadow Hawk. I just don't know that it'd be a good fit on the Thunderbolt.

I've got a set off a MWDA Phoenix Hawk that might work, though those might be a bit big. I also considered those for a plastic Unseen Phoenix Hawk, using the Unseen Phoenix Hawk's on a Crusader, and using the Crusader's on here, but the angled surfaces on the Unseen Thunderbolt may make that not work, either.

You could use the Re-Seen Phoenix Hawk's boosters that get attached to the back. You may need to carve it little bit to meld better. Its only couple bucks and it's better size than using the MWDA version.

I'm not sure how you can fake the wheels other than say they retract into the armor when not used.

Cut a shallow arc off a wheel and glue it to the back of the calves & shoulders, say they're partially retracted?

I used hollow styrene rods.  You can add putty to the center and mold to look like a tire and rims.
