Miniature of the Fortnight #140: Valkyrie
« on: 15 August 2022, 19:55:17 »
The Valkyrie was one of the few Unseen 'Mechs that first appeared in Technical Readout: 3025 and the only Macross-based Unseen. It's also one of two Classic 'Mechs to get an Iron Wind Metals miniature before the most recent Harmony Gold lawsuit, but it didn't reach distribution. We'll talk more about that shortly. If you'd like to learn about using it in game, see its 'Mech of the Week article. (Humming Wagner is optional and best done sparingly.)

Catalyst Game Labs originally unveiled some of the Classic designs for 'Mechs years ago. The second Classic mini released by Iron Wind Metals was the Valkyrie. They listed it in the release schedule and I believe they had done at least one production run - but the release was cancelled after the lawsuit was filed, so this mini never saw an official release. It was available as a con exclusive after the lawsuit was resolved, but my details are fuzzy about when this was, for how long, and if this is still an option. (If you're curious, I recommend asking IWM politely!)

The Valkyrie has only had a few sculpts through the years:
  • The original sculpt (20-851).
  • The plastic mini from the CityTech Second Edition box set, based on the metal sculpt.
  • The Reseen sculpt (20-221).
  • The Classic sculpt from IWM (originally 20-5149). (CamoSpecs Online has a placeholder page but I don't know if the eventual future release will be the same sculpt.)
  • And, most recently, the plastic mini released by CGL in the Inner Sphere Command Lance set.
If you have any of these painted, please share pictures. We'd love to see them!

Our next two fortnights will be:
  • 8/29: Archer
  • 9/12: Phoenix Hawk

Point of order: It was not a "plastic mini from the CityTech Second Edition box set, based on the metal sculpt" but rather a unique sculpt from PlasTech (FASA 1633, 1988).
Thought I might get a rocket ride when I was a child.          We are the wild youth,

My little Valkyrie.  First of the CGL plastics I painted.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

A reseen Valkyrie in 1st Aragon Borderers colors.

That football shaped head is so wide it did not fit between the 'fins'. Needed some 'extra TLC' with a file...

Only have two...

Davion - Sakhara Military Academy - VLK-QA Valkyrie

This one was painted back in the early 90's

Davion - 1 Davion Brigade of Guards - VLK-QF Valkyrie

Never really liked the reseen version. I felt it had a little too much 1959 Cadillac vibe, and the head looked more like something Stewie Griffin would want... So I modified it.

For my Alpha Strike 4th Succession War battalions project: 1st Argyle Lancers, Campbell's Battalion, Flying Squadron boasts 12 PlasTech Valkyries.  Plus a modified VLK-QF serving in another squadron in the battalion.  (Another lance of 4 QAs is in the works for the Steiner battalion.)

I really like the PlasTech models for bulk line mechs for bigger units where more animated poses could come across as more of a chorus line than a military formation.

The plastic Kickstarter version and 2 of the metal releases, unpainted.  There is alot of detailing changes from the metal to the KS plastic one also.

Wait, IWM sells a metal Valkyrie?  I haven't seen it on their site.  Is this a prerelease mini?

I think the were up for like a minute a few years back and then taken down (along with the Wasp)... I know they were available at GenCon a year, or two, or maybe three, ago, as I had someone get me a few.

Yep, had to work something out with a GenCon attendee to get mine.  I'd have them painted sooner. But didn't have any appropriate lancemates at the time, so they've been waiting for friends to join them.  As it appears, the new Battlemaster release might let me make the 1D, with the least amount of fuss.

Here's an unseen PlasTech one. I have two of them but the other one is still unpainted; they come on a hex base facing a point rather than a side, so they have to be re-based and the plastic they're made of doesn't soften when you boil it. I can't remember how I got this one's feet semi-cleanly off of the hex to re-base it, but it was a long time ago judging the crudeness of the paint job. Looking forward to getting one of the new ones because I love fielding them. The Valk-QD + Griffin 1DS is a great combo.

This was the one PlasTech model with that base design flaw.

With all 17 of mine, I used an XActo knife and cut one foot free from the base.  On the other foot, I cut the heel and toe free, and scored all around under the center of that leg.  Then grasped the attached leg with a pair of pliers and twisted the model til it was facing a base edge.  Glued the free foot back down with Zap-a-Gap and clamped the toe and heel to the base with clothespins while it set.  Put a drop of glue under the heel and toe of the other foot too just for security.
