Miniature of the Fortnight #143: Crusader
« on: 07 November 2022, 19:59:21 »
This fortnight, we look at the Crusader, another 'Mech hailing back to Battledroids. I don't have much to say about it. I never understood it as a 'Mech when I started playing and I haven't used it much since. If you want to know more about this 'Mech, read its 'Mech of the Week article, written by marauder648.

(In retrospect, lining up all of the Unseen 'Mechs at once may have been a bad idea. "Unseen to Reseen to Classic" gets a little old.)

The Crusader has had only a few sculpts, like the Phoenix Hawk:
  • The original metal sculpt from Ral Partha (20-834), also available in resin.
  • The plastic sculpt released by FASA in the BattleTech Third Edition boxed set, based on the Ral Partha sculpt.
  • The CRD-5K sculpt, the only Project Phoenix variant (20-217).
  • The CRD-8L sculpt, from the Technical Readout: 3085 variant (20-5171).
  • And, most recently, the Classic sculpt released by CGL.
If you have any of these painted, please share pictures. We'd love to see them!

Our next two fortnights will wrap up the original Unseen:
  • 11/21: Wasp
  • 12/5: Stinger

5th Sword of Light:  Work in Progress

Left to do:  all the Leadbelcher trim on the weapon ports and joints.  Then light nuln oil over the missile ports, Gloss varnish, decals, gloss varnish, matte varnish.  Maybe a little baby rock or two on the base.

I did alot of playing around with kitbashing to represent some of the other variants.  The head was one of my least liked peeves of the mech, besides the overly gangly look that contrasted with the fluff.  The later 7x release fixed that, thankfully.  I would have preferred to work with that version, if it was available sooner when I was doing these mods.

The 7L release would have been much better candidate for the 8S kitbash, in retrospect.

The new KS version definitely was fun to mod.

The Crusader is a underrepresented miniature in my collection. Currently I only have two painted.

Davion - Albion Military Academy - CRD-3D Crusader

This one was painted back in the early '90s, before a lot of source material, and I chose brown for the Albion Military Academy. I don't strip and repaint so about half are brown, the other half have the correct scheme.

Kurita - Red Hunter Special Operations Group Baron Harimandir Singh - CRD-3K Crusader

Three Crusaders.  One Project Phoenix in Wolf’s Dragoons Gamma Regiment colors, one PP resculpt from my First Marik Protectors unit, on one new plastic from the home mercs.

Now I’m all caught up.  :)
